Tesla Supercharging in the UK (and Europe) is free to all today (until 11pm) - this includes locations open to all EVs.

This is to mark 10 years since the first supercharger was released in Europe and the offer is also open to all non-Tesla drivers as well - provided of course that the station is already one of those selected to cater to everyone and not just the Model S, X, 3 and Y. Source.

got screwed over by non-Tesla's using Tesla chargers yesterday. Non-Tesla's have their port on the other side so they use the wrong parking bay which means a "spare" charger is unusable for a Tesla.

Not really their fault though. Tesla designed their chargers to work specifically with their cars and then open some of them up to all EVs. When you gotta charge you gotta charge, and based on my experiences of the public charging infrastructure outside of the supercharges, I do not blame them.

    Sorry...now I'm on a rant....
I dread charging at non-Tesla charge stations, it's scandalous how complicated many of them are to use for casual travelling. Install an app (let's hope I've mobile data signal) then sign up and register, then input car and card details and approve a prepayment on my banking app using MFA, I'm now 10mins in and a petrol car would have fueled, paid and been on their way by now. Then next, you finally get to the point on the app to start the charge and it tells you there was an error of some sort, and then you rinse and repeat and perhaps get it to start charging; this happens way too often. Another great one is the charge just stopping 15mins in, and you have to walk back to your car and reset, this happened to me at those rubbish podpoint chargers last week, had to do that twice! Another issue I encountered was only being able to charge if I had whatever company's RFID card, which is just great when you're parked there with 7% battery and have no options available. Makes me SOOOO MAD!!

Tesla chargers are at least reliable and fast, for Tesla drivers they're easy too as by default we already have the app etc. They're the only ones getting charging near right from what I can tell. What should be the case for ALL public chargers, is you drive up, plug in, use contactless to agree a max limit, say £20 or something, and then the charge starts and bills your card for the exact amount and you drive away. Why can it not be like that? (edited)

30-60 minutes waiting every time to charge car. No thank you.

Always leaving the house with a full tank, yes please 😘

Paying £5 for a tank, yes please

There’s +‘s and -‘s to everything in life.

I’ve just arrived and I’m charging from 25-80% in 25mins, that’s enough for me to drive from Norwich to Bristol later. It’s really no stress and the inconvenience compared to filling up a tank is minor.

So how much is this actually saving you? Genuine question, as I heard the cost of charging a tesla was getting expensive. Or anything at motorway services.. (edited)
    Top_Bana's avatar
Tesla chargers are around 40p a kW
All other brands are 55p to 79p at BP

I put in 50kWh so that’s saved me £15 off my peak home tariff rate or £39.5 if I was a mug without a Tesla using a generic fast charger.

An option - If you run out of juice because the UK power grid can't handle the peak in usage...

the daily mail isn't an accurate source of information buddy.

not only is there zero problem with the grid coping, electric cars would actually help the grid manage with demand at peak usage via V2G as adoption increases (edited)

Amazed no one has posted the photo of loads of Teslas queuing up last Xmas
    AdelRawas's avatar
Come see the queues at Costco petrol station. It took us 50 mins to fuel the car near Christmas

Currently sat at Birmingham St Andrews, plenty of free bays for anyone in the area and you don't need to drive a Tesla to charge here either

All very impressive and I'm fully in favour of the lower running cost of the EV, until I remember the £15k extra you paid for the car.
Which to my mind wipes out all the savings..

Just to think this is the future of motoring.Laughable yet sad.
    deltoid84's avatar
Just imagine what would happen if petrol stations did allow to fill up for free for a day.
Expected/predicted outcome: A total mayhem, extremely long queues with possible outbreaks of violence.
  12. deleted48909's avatar
Free superchargers = big queues = lots of people not getting home tonight.

    deleted9453's avatar
    Ah wrong again.
  13. szigmon123's avatar
Would be good if people just utilised this as they need to and enjoy free charging only if required. If everyone with an ev rushes out to a supercharger this is going to end up as a negative story with photos rolled out by the anti eV brigade every 2 mins

Imagine Esso or BP doing this. No really Imagine it, because it'll never happen........
    Carl_cr's avatar
Bp used to do it a lot most of the rapids were free
and then when they did start to charge was 10p I still didn’t use them because Nissan rapids were all free then few years later and Russian invasion the rates are like 77p kw
  15. philipwelton's avatar
Trip back from France second full charge for free today thank you mr Musk
  16. BettySwallocks's avatar
Well done Tesla, not the first time they have stepped in to help people who might be in need.

It's still laughable reading the comments from non EV/Tesla owners who still can't bear to acknowledge anything positive about Tesla.
    stingyguji's avatar
I doubt anyone that owns a Tesla is really "in need" of a free charge anyway
  17. chaz_187's avatar
If you havent got a tesla do you need to go to the non-tesla superchargers?

Nearest one is bit far but got a couple of tesla ones

If only we could run cars on the energy from all the arguments that break out on here when a Tesla offer comes along. It’s so entertaining how fuelled up people get if you disagree with them. Must be a post-COVID thing.

Thank you to the OP. I've just been to Braintree Gridserve and this worked perfectly for me. I charged up to 100% and once I was done I simply disconnected the charger and drove off. I was waiting for the notification of a Tesla charge to ping on my phone but nothing came through. A great marketing exercise from Tesla. Love it.
    Thanks again to the OP.

Smashed it. 50kwh added 2 miles from home. No solar today so this was well timed. Saved £3 off my Octopus tariff

Currently sat at 45% wondering if it's worth a 10 mile round trip +20mins wait in car for a free top up to 90% when I only pay 10p per kWh..... probably not!
    chaz_187's avatar
Probably not but then again it's free and if you got nothing else to do haha
