I have the Ac1900 version, its great. Set up as a Wireless access point had zero problems and its been in my garden room for a year.

Would it be better to get this or replace my ISP router for a better one? Just wanted to increase range aa it doesn’t quite reach my garden

Normally i'd say replace the ISPs router, but this seems to do the trick with most routers with poor distance signla problems. Effectively acting as an access point so will always 'take over' whenever that one is deemed the stronger connection.

Can this be plugged into a surge protector/extension or best directly into the wall?

I had one plugged into surge protection extension, no issues.

These work via WiFi, they're not the same as "home plugs" that utilise the buildings electric cables to transfer Internet signal.

So they just require a power supply.

All quite easy using tplink tether app. Set it up close to router, unplug from electric socket & simply move it to somewhere nearer to where you need signal. Job done.
