Will this do anything more than a £5 Bluetooth code reader that I have from AliExpress? I have a reader and app on my phone. Is this worth getting?

I had one of these and had it plugged in for about 2 years, then all of a sudden started having issues with electric cutting out. Got an auto electrician out to look at it and the first thing he looked for was the Bluetooth code reader. He said he must go to 3 people a month who have car issues due to these and strongly advised against them. I obviously unplugged mine and the issues I was having disappeared. (edited)

I had this, it broke after a few months of light use.

    Wouldn't buy again!

Very basic tool to essentially just read and clear engine codes. This won't read codes from other modules around the car, or reset airbag lights, reset service intervals etc.

Which do you recommend for BMW/MINI

    Thanks

Not sure about this particular model, but I have to recommend owning a code reader in general. I saved a huge amount by showing the garage the codes.

Why would that save a huge amount of money? They don't usually charge to read the codes?

Seems very cheap to me but I have experience of Mercedes ownership from which I know this will do almost nothing for my Mercedes.
I'm hovering over purchasing some for about £4-500 which still won't do everything that Mercedes Xentry Star system can do but probably about 70-80%of the way. Star system is several grand though!
Autel, Carly, iCar Soft, etc. do various models which handle various levels of tinkering.
You can get a pirated version of the Xentry with laptop included for about £6-800.
What any of these devices can do various from car brand to car brand and then then each one only goes do far - maybe a cheap one can read codes but it won't read all the codes, and they might cancel codes but not change settings, and TBD really good ones can recode keys, reset every option, advise what components within which system to test to resolve a problem. But legit top top ones cost about £4000+ and you then need to pay a yearly subscription to get all the latest updates and you'd also have to be officially registered my the manufacturer to be allowed and so on!

So it's a big of a minefield to say the least but you could be lucky and pay £5 for scanner which can see your problem and help you fix it, or not!

Will this turn off an engine management light....

I got a launch CR319 car scanner for £20ish last month. It was easy to turn the light off with that. There are YouTube videos around to help you. I think most of these cheap scanners probably do the same job. My problem was that it kept coming back on every 20 miles or so until the garage FINALLY worked out that a second sensor in the car was also faulty. Those bl@@dy lights are a nightmare.

I wouldn’t recommend clearing codes on your car, just take it to the local garage and get it fixed properly. Not only putting your life at risk but others too! Yeah use the tool to diagnose but that’s it!
    liam.walter's avatar
i agree but disagree with this comment not all of us just clear them and onto the next thats not the point of the codes lol they need to be read and acted upon
