These are usually around £50 on Amazon UK, and usually between $40 - $30 on Amazon US, so this is the cheapest I've seen this stick

Delivery takes about a week

It's pretty much standard Android TV, with some TiVo apps that can be disabled

The remote is pretty good, too

You'll need to register this device using a US address (I used a Macdonald's in Washington DC)

Pretty good alternative to the Firestick

Including delivery and VAT etc this is about £32. Struggling to see it as such a great deal.

Just wondering if the OP genuinely got this for less?

Apologies, everyone, I omitted the additional charges

Quite correct, it's $25 plus taxes and delivery

But, still, it's one of the best sticks I've used (the best being the Nvidia shield)

    Apologies once again

Surely better off with a chromecast with google tv than a us designed streamer?

It's a nifty box, but really - really - US focussed.

    Really? In what way?

I've removed or disabled all the TiVo systems and apps, and it behaves pretty much like any android device.

Although, I have noticed that installing the BBC iPlayer app seems to be impossible, but that might be a good thing for some people!

    Link does not work

Try opening the deal link incognito

Because the link is to the US store, it might be an issue if opening on a mobile device, with the Amazon app installed

So, I can watch live US TV channels with this? Does it need some kind of IPTV setup or does it work via an app?
    BigCheeseGlenni's avatar
You would need logins for each app unless you did the iptv

Yes the price in the OP is less VAT. Nice deal though without VAT. (edited)

Wouldn't you have to pay us export duty?

I have one and bought it a while ago on Amazon .com . You ideally need a VPN. And a US address to benefit from the fact it's a us device. Peacock won't install anymore as "device inst safe" pity really. I've changed to an Onn box with a VPN for US content
    nige182's avatar
The Onn box looked tempting too, but I couldn't see anywhere to buy that without a pretty big price markup.

Mine just arrived a week ahead of estimated delivery date. I can confirm that it works with the micro-USB Chromecast mains lead with wired ethernet. Mine is now downloading firmware update over wired ethernet, I'll properly test it out this evening.

I also let it install a few games and 3D Mark benchmark to try. Though for some reason I can't find the installed 3DMark benchmark to actually run it. I haven't tried the games yet but have found them in the menu system.

OK so 3DMark is strange, it was selected as a recommended app during initial setup (from my Google Play account supported apps), and installed, but it does not appear anywhere in the menus... So I found it in the Play Store on the device, and there is only an 'Uninstall' button, no 'Open' button as there is with any other installed app. So 3D Mark is 'supported' but not really. (edited)

I’ve read through the thread but I can’t see any reason to buy this over a fire stick! Am I missing something? Thanks in advance.

Firestick 4k models are more expensive (even when on sale), they have loads of ads these days and the UI is not very nice in my opinion, and Amazon have blocked booting into a third party loader now, you can still sideload them but cannot boot straight into them any more. This also has Chromecast built in and support for Airplay, an additional USB-C port for connecting storage or other devices, and some will prefer the remote.

This also uses Google Assistant rather than Alexa which some may prefer and others may not.

That isn't to say I recommend this over the Firestick though, my list of unsupported apps above and the fact this is imported and not intended for the UK market may be offputting to some. If this was generally available in the UK and supported all the streaming apps, I'd say this over a Firestick, as it is though it will depend a lot on what your needs are in terms of supported apps (without sideloading) and how much you care about ads and the differences in hardware and user experience.

There is a comparison on Versus though it is limited as doesn't mention unsupported apps: versus.com/en/…-4k (edited)

Personally you would be better off with a new firestick for all USA/UK APPS but if you fancy one of these I’d say good luck to you

Personably I’d get the amazon 4k stick
The Apple TV is best out there for sure but that’s a lot more money.

I dunno, I really like these tivos sticks -- much more reliable, better OS support, better app support, better remote...

Does everything the Firestick does, but better

    But, each to their own

I thought TiVo was an American thing, not U.K.
    nige182's avatar
Mostly, though I believe Virgin Media still sell TiVo set top boxes. This however is an American device from Amazon US.

Does this support l1 widevine? If not do any of those Android TV boxes on Amazon support l1?
    stec77's avatar
I’m pretty sure the Amazon fire sticks all have widevine so as to play Netflix at full HD resolution.

Well, mine arrived after about five days, and it was easy to set it up, and it behaves as though it has always been in the UK

WiFi is reliable, the remote is fantastic, and the stick itself is fast and responsive. The extra USB-C port is also handy for all kinds of reasons. All my apps are working fine, with UK content (Netflix, Disney, Amazon Video, YouTube). The only app I can't install is iPlayer, but casting from mobile works adequately

All in all, it cost $40, which was about £31 delivered. Happy days

Thanks for the update, I decided to order one to try and it is en route at the moment. Not too bothered about iPlayer, but it seems strange that being Android it is blocked for some reason, feels like it is a targetted block on device type by BBC as not intended for the UK market like they used to do with Roku. Given BBC geolock it anyway it feels overkill to device restrict as well.

So after a bit of time I figured I'd give an update with my thoughts on it now. Still really like it, but definitely recognise it won't be for everyone as it is currently, for most the Fire Stick is probably the easier option. For most I'd say get the Chromecast with Google TV 4k for a bit more money, but if this is the price point we are looking at then it will be a toss-up between the Fire Stick 4k when on sale and this. If you have Freeview Play built into TV then you don't really need any of the apps missing on this, so I'd say consider this as it is a better user experience, but if you want all the apps on one device then the Fire Stick but recognise the worse launcher, older Android version and lots of ads as downsides with that.

I think if they released this in the UK, and thus made sure it support the UK streaming apps it would do very well. The way it integrates the major streaming apps into the homepage is very nice and if they partnered with say Freeview or Youview for a UK release to get the channel guide from there it would be amazing. They'd probably partner with Virgin for a UK release (if they were ever to do one) though since Virgin do TiVo boxes already, even so that would probably work well. Such a shame this hasn't had a UK release really. (edited)
