Nvidia shield used to the pinnacle of android streaming device's but over the last 2 years has become absolutely awful with every update, both my machines have become slow with constant hanging that needs multiple daily hard rebooting, Plex server is atrocious due to there own awful updates. What was once the king is now a has been.

The device is getting old and needs a refresh. That said, I bought the first Shield in 2017 and I am still using it today. It's been an amazing purchase, but I wouldn't buy a new one until they do a proper update on the device.

What are the main advantages of this over the Google TV 4k?

Dolby Vision from local media. Upscaling

I have a firestick 4k. All I use it for is streaming. What's the benefit of this?
    Alex_H's avatar
You won't find any in that case. Real advantage of these is being able to play any type of local content, probs more but for streaming only, not worth it.

Hot, got it for £95.99 as I still had the £4off voucher for getting it delivered to an Amazon locker.

Is it still old hardware a viable option when comes to local streaming I.e. when compared to FireStick Max ?
    maxyone1's avatar
I would say yes, just from hardware stand point.
Check this website for a more detailed comparison:

i have the shield 4k pro. I also have a 2022 sony bravia tv that has google play on both with disney+ being unable to download saying the app is no longer compatible with your device.

Spent hours with no resolution after many fixes now im stuck with two unusable android OS devices.

Will be steering clear of anything google play store related in future. useless.

I need to buy the Pro version but once they release a new one. This hardware is more than 5 years old and Nvidia needs to update it soon.

I hope Apple TV 4K will support true HDMI pass through in the future.

I've had a Pro your years. It used to be good, but now not so much.

    1. It's full of ads and you can't turn them off. A lot of them are not suitable for children either.

    2. A firmware update broke CDC support and they never fixed it. After power on I need to wait about 3 minutes for it to stop freezing as it talks to my soundbar.

Where do the ads appear? Im curious as I have the pro 2019 and never noticed an advert.

I have 2 2019 pros and never seen an advert on them. I wonder if they'll let me buy another one with free ads? (edited)
    r9000's avatar
I have the 2019 as well. The launcher has ads now. They all do.

Would people recommend the shield pro over this for use with GFN? Thinking two usb slots for mice/keyboard.
    ronniefront's avatar
Just cancelled my order on the 'tube' to get the pro after reading this thread.

Firestick 4k Max is £60 but when on offer I got it for £35, it plays everything, every app, I use a 3tb harddrive (No nas) on my router and VLC player on any firestick in my house can pick it up and plays perfect. Ive always thought about buying the pro sheild, but as these firestick have got upgraded so quickly now I can't find a reason to buy something else.

Yeah I've been eyeing the Shield for a long time now but went for the FireTV Cube 3 instead. Stuck a custom launcher on it to get rid of the ads and Kodi for full audio passthrough. All I use it for is Plex so it's actually better than a Shield Pro for me, which has the red tint on Dolby Vision, no hw AV1 decode and software seems to be more hit and miss as time goes on.

Only thing missing is gigabit ethernet but I get about 200mbps from a dongle plugged into the USB port. (edited)

Sony has released playstion remote play for Google TV, so a nice cheap easy way to play in the bedroom, would there be no difference in quality/performance if I used this Vs a Google TV chromcast dongle?
