"If you have a Pixel 5 or earlier, you receive unlimited storage for photos and videos backed up from your device at no charge"

Just to note, with the pixel 5 only the data saver file size is unlimited. Still very very useful!

    Which? phone support calculator

    which.co.uk/rev…vEN

Estimated security support expiry date > Google Pixel 5 > October 2023

Worth bearing in mind when making the purchase.

Why is Pixel 5 receiving more praise compared to S21 and S23? What sets Pixel 5 apart from these models?
    p3108's avatar
    1. The sheer delight of how it feels to use it, size and heft wise.

    2. Great battery life.

    3. Pixel 'skin'.

    4. Pixel camera.

    5. Unlimited saved storage on Google One/Drive for photos and videos which will carry on after support ends.

    6. Android 14 coming soon. Downside is security patches stop in October this year.
  4. p3108's avatar
Love my Pixel 5 down/upgrade from my Pixel 6. So much so that I am likely going to change my philosophy on only using a phone that still receives security updates and continue to use it past October 2023 when the security updates stop. It will be on Android 14.

I've got a Sorta Sage but also have a Just Black as a back up.
    sufy123's avatar
Don't worry nothing will happen. I've been using my Pixel 4 XL since it stopped receiving security updates. Nothing has happened and nothing will happen (edited)

Anyone who has a pixel 5 could you do a test for me with the camera?
Turn on 4k video and then hold the camera in portrait mode, start recording a video and then slowly turn 360 degrees around. Does the video stutter the first times you do this or is it smooth?
This is the only bug with the pixel 3 so I want to know if it's been fixed.
    p3108's avatar
    Smooth in 4k 30 and 4k 60 but I wouldn't use 4k 60 on any SD765G Pixel (4a 5G, 5 and 5a) as they overheat very quickly using it.

Just leaving this here, I've got a code for 15% off from the Google Store.

Tempting to upgrade from 4a 5g
    Evouk's avatar
Not really. Smaller screen, no headphone jack, worse stereo speakers. Apart from a bit of extra ram they use the same chip, camera exactly the same.
  8. Robiesanta's avatar
Can I ask a stupid question please? Can a phone be used once the Android updates stop? Is it really vulnerable to use the phone after it stops? Thanks.
    Sickyman678's avatar
    Yes

Just flash a custom ROM afterwards to carry on getting security updates and new version of Android
  9. umirza85's avatar
This is so close to my biting points, im looking for 2 phones for kids to just play games and watch youtube. Was hoping for something sub £90 but this is tempting.....

I use this phone with Graphene OS and it has no flaws other than the hole in the screen for the camera. Everything about it is great and the best thing is it's small and light, so I don't feel like a brick in my pocket is weighing me down and I can use it one handed while riding to work. It just seems like all people have focused on with new phones is they need more and more cameras..... One is enough and the Pixel 5's is good, never had any complaints... I haven't ever used whatever the second one is for.
    neelsn007's avatar
Do banking apps and wallet work with Graphene OS?

It's a shame the software support ends this year, if it had another year or two I'd be all over it. (edited)

If you’re okay with custom roms, you could potentially flash LineageOS.

I stumbled across an insane deal this morning from a Google search for S21. I found an S21 FE 'Used - Very Good' on OnBuy being sold by EO Distribution for £127.49 .

It is Lavender colour, probably the one I'd want the least but to be honest I only bought it because I'm genuinely curious to see what gets sent for that price.

There was only one left at that price.

This is entirely off topic other than to say that it won't be replacing my Pixel 5 as my daily, it is just a curiousity as I haven't had an S21 FE to check out before.

Android 16 and security patches until Jan 2027 though!

I do think that a used S21 is probably the consistently priced best value used flagship at the moment though given it will get Android 15 and security patches until Jan 2026. (edited)
    p3108's avatar
I received my S21 FE yesterday so next day delivery.

What I've got is not 'Used - Very Good' the screen has a lot of scratches but they don't really show up with the screen on. There are some other weird blotches on the screen that won't wipe off but again don't show up with the screen on. The frame and rear also have a few dings. I'd call this Grade C average. No screen burn-in and yet to test battery health.

Got to remember it was £127.49. (edited)

They also have the 4A for £95! Another great phone, and if you want 5G, backmarket have the 4A 5G for £100!

I must say.. the phone (Excellent quality) was in pristine condition. Not a single scratch.

The only thing was the box was missing the outer sleeve with the image of the phone on it.

    Super chuffed.

My favouritest phone in the whole wide world!
    deleted531767's avatar
Speakers are a bit rubbish on them. I'm ditching my mint condition Pixel 5 and unused Pixel 7. Over saturated everything with the cameras on them.

  19. sheffield788's avatar
At the time Pixel 5 came out, the price was similar to Samsung S21. I went for S21, as it has better specs and it is a better look phone. I wish I would've gone for Pixel 5. My wife has Pixel 4a. If we both use our phones the same amount of time, when her phone battery is 70%, mine is dead.
I would've gone for this now, but the battery is probably worn.
    Voted hot!
    p3108's avatar
Battery is a turd on the S21 but it will get updates until Jan 26 unlike the Pixel 5 that will stop in Oct 23 despite only being released a quarter before the S21. Ridiculous from Google.
  20. Langers88's avatar
I've had a Pixel 1, 3XL and 5 and the 5 is by far my favourite. I thought the smaller form factor would bother me after the 3XL but actually with it having no bezels it wasn't that much of a difference in screen size. The battery lasts me all day still, even after 2 and a half years. I also prefer the small form factor now, really hope Google do this size again in the future! Highly recommend this phone!
    sufy123's avatar
You should have tried a Pixel 4 or the XL. A great phone too with that super fast face unlock.
  21. dealcatcherer's avatar
This phone is great, this is the best compact premium by a mile, I use mine daily, I bought one for my dad who does a lot of hiking. The camera is unreal for price, free saver storage, very tough build...
    DonkeyKonk's avatar
Proper one handed use is great (pretty much the maximum size for that, the 7a is just too tall for example) and yes very tough build too.

I also had the 4a, but I feel the 5 is a big step up in general performance and quality (and the battery in my 4a fell away very badly, became unusable 6 months ago), whereas the 5 is still going very strong.

Tempted to pick up another pixel 5! They are such great phones .

Still using mine from the Google preorder
    sufy123's avatar
    No issues with it?
  24. DonkeyKonk's avatar
Pixel 5 is a great phone, I have two, why Google can't give another year of Updates is beyond me (especially as they have since increased the updates "lives" on newer pixels), just greedy corporate nonsense (to get people to buy new phones), this phone could easily last me another 2-3 years if they have the updates.

I will probably carry on with the Pixel 5 for at least another year as my main phone, and not worry about security updates, but would be so easy for them to support this phone fully for longer. (edited)
    sufy123's avatar
Same with the Pixel 4. (edited)

Best phone of recent years, closest today is

Zenfone 10, virtually the same size but heavier
S23, a little thicker in the hand and touch heavier
    p3108's avatar
I didn't realise the S23 is thicker in the hand. Thanks.
  26. JoeLennox's avatar
On paper Pixel 5 has worse CPU than Pixel 3
    p3108's avatar
    In practice it's fine.

Upgraded the Mrs pixel 3a to 5 thanks Switchy 🔥

Currently using a Pixel 5, I like it, swapping to a Pixel 8 later in the year hopefully. I perfer the smaller handset size so if fits in pockets easily etc, just occasionally manufacturers release a decent smaller phone and the Pixel 5 was certainly that.
    sanmarinojR's avatar
Checkout Asus Zenfone 9 / 10 for a proper small beast. Pixel 8 would be smaller , but how smaller then the 7 we don't know yet. It's a big phone.
  29. SClub's avatar
Such a great handset still. Will only to change to Pixel 8 if they make it smaller and fit a proper fingerprint scanner.
    p3108's avatar
It won't be a rear mounted FPS. It is ultrasonic like Samsung though. The issue here is that they don't work well with a tempered glass screen protector.
  30. NealBurton's avatar
Decent. just picked up a Mi11 for 190 and it's infinitely better spec wise. if you can afford a little bit more, go for that.
    Limmy's avatar
The pixel 5 is small and that phone is massive, not comparable

Great little phone, in the UK at least. I moved to South America recently and was amazed to find out it wasn't a market Google are in with phones. One downside to this is that 5G doesn't work, so I've stuck on 4G and also stuffed if I need any repairs etc. Fortunately I was planning to replace it this year anyway, I'm back in the UK in October and around Christmas, so between now and then I'll be trying to decide what to replace it with. Wife and daughter keep pushing me to get an iPhone because they use them, but I've been Android forever, specifically Samsung, before I tried Google. So...Samsung or iPhone? I hear iPhone 15 will have a USB-C port, which would at least mean I'll already have a ton of leads I can use with it, not sure that's a great reason to buy it though!
    Evouk's avatar
I'm in the same position but I have a 4a5G and security updates finish in November. Very tempted to change but not to a iPhone. I've got nothing against them, I have had a iPhone but it's not for me. Been Android for too long now anyway , back to the days of Nexus phones.

I went for one. Will have a go and send it back if im not happy. Giving it a bash. Who even cares about security updates.
