Ok guys. Please please please avoid this deal

it is a terrible charger that still uses GPRS. And this deal is only worth about £170 in free electric.

just google it you will find 100s of people moaning about how it is unusable.

I can not stress enough. Do not get this charger.

also just in general. They are really fussy now when fitting these things. All suppliers. As part P of some electric code got updated to say that the bonding must be checked before you can have one.  On gas and water. So anyone like me who is not in a modern house check your bonding as you will likely fail (edited)

    What about the EO

Or should I go with My energy zappi octopus intelligent go.

Yes I am avoiding gprs as it will be switched off in 203x

So if anyone spends more than £439 a year on charging, it is cheaper to buy this (even if you don't need it)

    Second charger for me!!!

Fair usage rules check the T&C's still seems decent if you schedule your charging, 8000 Miles equivalent cap it says (edited)

What about the installation of a smart meter? I'm guessing that's an electricity smart meter not gas! What if you already have one but from a different supplier (EDF)? Will BG replace that with their own one? I heard not all smart meters work with all suppliers.
    nickl360's avatar
The first generation SMART meters (SMETS1) were not able to change suppliers but the ones that are installed now, and have been for some time (SMETS2) allow you to change supplier easily. You won’t need to have the meter replaced if you change supplier. You may only be able to select certain tariffs with a SMART meter, but given most tariffs are at the price cap it doesn’t make a difference if you were to change now

Would appreciate some help as to what tariff to go for. I’ve been offered jan v34 or the ev tariff. swinging towards the ev tariff, its slightly more expensive per kWh during the day but severely cheaper during the night. (edited)
    Aeschylus's avatar
There is only one tariff you should be considering and that is octopus intelligent.

7.5p for six hours and 31p at other times.

however you need a wall charger. Not this one though for the love of god not this one (edited)

20% TCB on Hive EV chargers topcashback.co.uk/hive/
There was a stackable 15% deal 2 weeks ago, but now gone.
    Still a decent deal.
Anyone considering should check their house main fuse. Many are 60amp on old domestic installations. Should be 80 or 100 for an EV. Some chargers, like Zappi, can be set for 60a charging.
    margamboy's avatar
I think Hive if fitted by BG will upgrade the fuse and install an isolation switch, Octopus have done it for me as they are the DNO

If you're with British Gas & don't have a charger point it's worth it. If you're with another i.e. Octopus then you're better off not having this deal as you pay 7.5 per kWh at certain times. You'll also need a smart meter that works with British Gas.

The installation fees is okay, plus you'll get 3 year warranty & a peace of mind - you can also pay monthly without any interest for up to 10 months.

It's also up to 8,000 miles and recall an adviser saying only ONE EV car per property.

    You'll save roughly around £200.

I would opt for the EO Mini Pro 3 as it'll have solar panel option feature unlike the Alfen (edited)
    james_jew's avatar
It’s not 7.5p anytime. Its 7.5p per KWh from 23.30 to 05.30 AND some times if
You plug in during the day they may give
You cheap rate if there is low demand. You let Octopus control your charge and make a charging schedule. All other times it’s peak rate approx 35pKWh.

The good thing about this is if you have house batteries you can benefit from the cheap night rate. For instance I charge all my batteries up at night if there is no solar for the 7.5p cheap rate so never pay peak price. (edited)

Good deal but shame it's for electricity only, would definitely buy one if it came with 12 months free petrol.

    +£500 to install it
    sazim's avatar
Is it too expensive or a normal price?

generally speaking how does this compare with Pod Point?

Also this offer requires signing up for a british gas tarrif... how does that compare to octopus?
    petem2's avatar
Podpoints don't seem to weather very well.
Ours started to discolour within about 12m of install. Was South facing in South East so did get quite a bit of sun though.

    Charger details at hivehome.com/sho…ine

No comment on this in itself. Conscious that this is of course a value sharing site, so price is important to readers.

with that disclaimer, longer and wider plans may be a factor in your purchase decision.

EV charging can be standalone, or part of your home energy system.

    They can integrate with your solar panel system and your grid energy supplier's tariffs;
    - if your solar panel system is producing a surplus, EV chargers can divert that to your car - "free" miles
    - in winter, they can charge overnight based on your supplier's cheap rate, (just like this, but not tied to British Gas)

    An example is GivEnergy
    givenergy.co.uk/pro…er/

If you invest in solar, this can give you free miles as long as your panels produce a surplus.

That may be an alternative approach to consider. There is a substantial installation cost with this charger; if you install *with* your solar + battery system, the EV charger installation part may be less than this standalone cost, and the installer will be more "invested" in doing a good job.

That's a long term, much bigger investment; but it may represent longer term value - free miles *every* sunny day!

I'm getting solar eventually but not for another couple of years realistically. Know of any reasonably priced EV chargers that will integrate with solar? Couldn't find a cost on this website for the Givenergy one

Good deal if you already have British Gas and need a charge point, but a lot to go wrong if you start messing about changing providers just to get it!!
I have this Hive Alfie charger but am with OVO (7p k/w any time charging), it’s been fine for over a year now
    golty's avatar
I have the OVO 7p deal also, it's been great with an Ohme home pro charger and it works perfectly every time, just hope it stays like that forever !
  14. goodmerm's avatar
With the octopus tariff you need off street parking to get the charger, but I don't see any such restriction on this. Seems a great option.
  15. Syed_Hayat's avatar
Do you have to be with British gas for this offer?
    nothingmuch's avatar
    Yes on any tariff
  16. stantier2's avatar
Does anyone know how this actually works?

If I order the charger, what happens next?
    PotentWeasel's avatar
They get in touch to collect details for installation.
  17. margamboy's avatar
On my current EV tariff this would save me £250 per year, but then you need to factor in the installation costs of £400+, even if done by yourself (if qualifed) you will need the matierials etc, so total cost is going to be double quoted here or at least couple hundred more and then you have to switch to BG tariff for the year.. For £250 saving I'm not sure, so not voting either way.

The brutal reality is you don’t actually need a wall charger if you top
    Up each night via 13amp
    That’s the beauty of ev
7.5p per kWh on octopus intelligent and you don’t need a wall charger if your car is compatible - if your car isn’t - then you need specific ones - this isn’t one of them
BG are not cheap for ev charging
Free miles? Nope - far out of pocket for paying for the charger etc

You do if for instance you need to travel two long distance journeys back to back.
We have a 64kwh e-Niro and I recently needed to do a 200 mile round trip every other day for a week.
It's not possible to charge it fully in the of peak hours with the granny charger.
I ended up charging all day, at peak prices. Still cheaper a than using public chargers.
Generally we can manage with the granny charger, but going to get a 7kw charger for those times I need to get more charge into it during off peak.

I have no experience of this charger, but with Hive thermostat i have been put off so much that I am staying clear from all of B.G product.

next they will introduce monthly membership just to see the reports on your usage etc

Another deal that exclude current hive and British gas customers. Alsolute joke....
    BarneyRubble's avatar
Wait British Gas still has existing customers?
  22. Spenfica's avatar
    I do 8000 miles a year at 7.5ppkwh so that’s about £150 a year.
So, about. £290 for the charger is still pretty good
    Aeschylus's avatar
Only if you can fit for free. Otherwise £500 for fitting.
  23. matwalaboy's avatar
I am with Octopus on a standard tariff, should I consider this charger and switch to British Gas - if not can someone please suggest what charger + supplier should I look at? Thanks a lot. (edited)

I live in a end terrace and placed an order for the EO Mini Pro 3 as I couldn’t see any mention of dedicated off-road parking being required.

However now that I’ve placed order they want proof of off road parking!

Anyone else opted for this and managed to get them to install it without a drive?
