Update 2
19/04/2024 Update

Hope everyone is having a nice day today!

People might be noticing SSDs rising up in price during the last few months. Last year had a massive oversupply of NAND due to overproduction and as a consequence Micron/Samsung/Hynix cut back NAND production by 30% to 50% in 2H 2023 here, here and here. This is primarily affecting TLC NAND right now but will start to affect the cheaper QLC NAND in due course. Chinese maker YMTC also is entering production headwinds due to tech sanctions mentioned here.

In April 2024,further price increase have been announced by Samsung here in the order of around 20% and Western Digital is also increasing prices due to supply chain problems as mentioned here.

So I thought it would be a good idea to make an SSD thread, to make it easier for people to find the best SSD deals on the site. This will be updated as time progresses.

SSDs are grouped by functionality, not price so scroll down the list.

PS5 Compatibility and Upgrades(Please Read)

4286317_1.jpg

PS5 users need to go for Gen4 drives at a minimum, and those which are single sided.Preferably in the mid/high tiers as a minimum of 5500MB/s read speed is required. A heatsink is also suggested. Some lists worth looking at are here, here and here. These are not hard and fast guides as new models get launched all the time. The officially licensed SSD is the Western Digital SN850P but this is pricey.

Linus Tech Tips makes an informative video about upgrading the storage in the PS5 here and the Sony official installation video is here and guide is here.

You can also use an external SSD too as detailed here. USB extended storage requirements on PS5 console:
  • SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps or later.
  • 250 GB minimum, 8 TB maximum capacity.
  • Not all devices are guaranteed to work with the PS5 console.
  • You can't connect the drive through a USB hub.
  • Two or more USB extended storage drives can't be connected at the same time. You can connect multiple USB drives to your console, but you can use only one at a time.

Each SSD category will indicate PS5 suitability. Suggested heatsinks(if not included with the drive) are at the bottom of the guide.

Glossary

QLC: Quad Level Cell. A lower cost NAND.
TLC: Triple Level Cell. Faster and more wear resistant NAND.
NAND: A type of flash memory used in storage.
NVMe: Non-Volatile Memory Express. Uses PCIe for faster speeds. Cableless.
SATA:Serial Advanced Technology Attachment.Older legacy standard which requires cables.
DRAM/DRAMLESS: Drives with DRAM use it to buffer writes so are better for write heavy scenarios.
HMB:Host Buffer Memory. Used in DRAMLESS drives, part of the storage is allocated as a cache to keep write speeds consistent. Used as a substitute for DRAM.

Is it me or have the prices gone up recently? I was looking at cheap 2TB drives for £60 last September, now they're more like £80. I think I'll wait.

I explained it at the top of the description. The NM610 Pro is £68 if you check the thread. (edited)

What ssd can I add to a ps5 as expandable storage??
    fishmaster's avatar
It depends what you mean by expandable storage. Do you mean replacing the internal SSD or do you mean connecting an SSD via USB? If you mean replacing the internal SSD then any PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive will do despite what Sony say about minimum speed requirements. If you mean USB based storage then there's plenty of options in that regard.

Fantastic thread OP, thank you. I wondered why there seemed to be such an increase since I got a couple of NVMe's last year.

There was a huge oversupply of NAND and DRAM last year. Companies overproduced NAND/DRAM but as the Pandemic came to an end,PC sales slumped last year. Micron and Samsung lost billions of USD:
    blocksandfiles.com/202…rs/ (https://blocksandfiles.com/2023/09/28/microns-muted-revenues-set-for-generative-ai-boost-over-next-two-years/)
    frontiertec.net/en/…ai/ (https://frontiertec.net/en/2024/01/03/samsung-loses-tens-of-billions-of-dollars-in-chip-losses-and-hopes-to-turn-around-this-year-with-ai/)

Between them,at least $12 billion due to overproduction of NAND/DRAM so were dumping it last year. So they cut output of NAND by 30% to 50% in 2H 2023 and will continue cuts in production until 2H 2024:
    digitimes.com/new…tml (https://www.digitimes.com/news/a20231031PD205/chips+components-dram-east-asia-memory-chips-nand-flash-sk-hynix-south-korea.html)
    reuters.com/tec…30/ (https://www.reuters.com/technology/samsung-electronics-q3-profit-falls-78-chip-loss-narrows-2023-10-30/)

The companies are betting on the AI boom to increase NAND and DRAM demand.

YMTC which is the main Chinese NAND maker, was going to supply Apple, but the US government stopped them,so there is some oversupply of that. This is why some other SSDs(such as the NM790) are reasonably cheap.

But as the months progress, the oversupply will dry up. (edited)

It might be worth also looking at what drives are recommended for energy efficiency as I'm sure as many M.2 drives sell for laptops as they do for PS5s. It was right hassle to find a Hynix P31 the other week and that seller seems to have dried up, so some other options that run lean (and heck, Gen4 isn't even particularly necessary for those kinds of workloads) would be v nice!

I put in a few NM790 deals as that is quite efficient according to Techpowerup:
    techpowerup.com/rev…tml

The SN580 is also at the top. P31 is definitely very low in absolute power draw. (edited)

Keeping an eye on this. I bought a WD SN850X 4TB for ~£220 on Black Friday. Wishing now I bought two as struggling to find one below £300 now.

Really happy with it as my main PC game drive. My storage drive is still a HDD... I figured I could just copy stuff across when I want to do video editing etc but I've realised I'm really lazy so need to upgrade and bin the HDD!

Hi all, If I buy Lexar NM790, I want to use as external storage for media. Would there be a casing that it fits into? I sqw that Ugreen 10gbs casing but the heatsink appears fat and I am just thinking it might not fit

Prices don't seem great at all when I look at just one example from the list - the Crucial P3 500GB for £35.06. The 1TB Crucial P3 was on sale last year in Aug, Sep and Dec for £34.35, £34.34 and £33.95 - that's twice the capacity for less price. Prices don't seem like 'deals', just another post for these are just 'just best prices at the moment'.

TLC drives are generally more consistent than QLC based drives. DRAM helps if there is a lot of writing happening but can lead to higher power consumption.
