A Breakdown Of eSims, Who Offers Them, And The Advantages + Current Deals

Update 1
Thread updated with some current offers
As eSim are now getting more and more popular, this discussion aims to try and explain the advantages, disadvantages, and some networks / MVNO's who offer eSim.

4293086_1.jpg
How eSIMs Work:

  • An eSIM, short for “embedded SIM”, is a small chip embedded in your device.
  • It performs the same function as a traditional SIM card but is not physically removable.
  • The information on an eSIM is rewritable, meaning you can change your network without removing your SIM and inserting a new one.
  • You can switch to a different network with a phone call or online, often just by scanning a QR code with your smartphone’s camera.

eSIM Providers in the UK:

  • All four of the UK’s major mobile networks – EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 – offer eSIM support for compatible devices.
  • Outside of the major networks, the likes of Giffgaff also support eSIMs. But there is a list below of some other mvno's who offer this service
  • Some worldwide providers also support eSIM.

Advantages of eSIMs:

  • Ease of Network Switching: An eSIM makes it much easier to switch mobile networks. Instead of needing to order a new SIM and waiting for it to arrive, you can switch to a different network with a phone call or online.
  • Multiple Profiles: Up to five virtual SIM cards can be stored on one eSIM at a time, This means you can quickly switch between different networks if you find yourself in an area without a signal on your usual network.
  • Ideal for Travel: It also makes it easier to switch to a local network while travelling, without needing to physically insert a local SIM Using a local mobile network while abroad can be much cheaper than paying roaming costs to your UK network.
  • Environmentally Friendly: There are no plastic cards or shipping materials, which means less waste.

Disadvantages of eSim
  • Limited Support: Not all smartphones support eSIM technology. While many newer models do, older or less expensive models may not.
  • Limited Carrier Support: While eSIM technology is growing, not all carriers support it. This could limit your options if you want to switch networks.
  • No Physical Transfer: Unlike a traditional SIM card, an eSIM cannot be physically transferred from one phone to another. This could be a disadvantage if you frequently switch phones or have a backup phone.
  • Potential for Damage or Loss: While an eSIM is safe from physical damage, it could still be susceptible to data corruption or loss

Providers who offer eSim and the respective plans for the EU and USA:

Airalo

BNESIM

Flexiroam

Maya Mobile

Nomad

Spusu

UBIGI

Yesim

Leveraging an eSIM for your travel needs provides immense convenience by removing the hassle of swapping physical SIM cards. However, it’s recommended to compare the rates offered by local providers in your travel destination, as they can often be more cost-effective than your eSIM tariff.

Airalo - US - £10 for 10gb for 30 days. This seems to be the best choice for holiday trips to the US, when I've been researching this week. (edited)

Is there a way to use a physical sim card and an esim(both having the same number) at the same time on different phones?

Anyone know of a comparison site for eSIM's and worldwide destinations such as Thailand or India?

Just returned from Thailand.  Used maya mobile for browsing.  Turned off main sim when we arrived.  Maya sim activated within half an hour £15 for 30 days 10gb.  Only used just over 5gb in 16 days. Win win

    Another advantage…

if someone steals your phone and it’s locked, they cannot transplant your SIM to their device to receive 2-step verification codes. So if they got your wallet and tried to go shopping online, they can’t authenticate that purchase easily.
    graham321's avatar
Yep. This is why you should always have a SIM PIN set up - if you don't, all someone needs to do is move your PIN to a new phone and they have access to your SMS/phone. Can do plenty with that.

It's easy to set one up, but be careful - if you forget it you can end up locking yourself out.

You have a typo Flexiroam should say 500MB not 500GB.

    An esim is also better for security, for example;

if your phone is stolen, they could simply put your simcard in another phone to access anything, reset any account linked to the phone number, gmail ect, then install apps via the playstore like whatsapp, Google Authenticator codes ect. It doesn't matter if you have an iphone with faceid, nothing protects you if they put your simcard in another phone. An esim fixes this.

    Good post

Few months ago I remember reading article about eSims apparently you can up to five virtual SIM cards can be stored on one eSIM at a time. This means you can quickly switch between different networks if you find yourself in an area without a signal on your usual network.

Don’t know if you’ve mentioned it but an iPhone can have upto 8 eSims registered at any given time + 1 physical sim. I don’t know why someone may want that but yeah just thought I’d comment on it

I used an Airlo SIM in Thailand recently and it worked brilliantly. Around £12 for 2 weeks unlimited data which worked immediately on landing.

One advantage of an eSIM is that your regular SIM still works for receiving SMS (handy for 2FA messages for logging into banking etc) and you can receive calls.

What is the best esim for using in Japan, will need data a mins

Hopefully someone will answer as i go in five weeks.

It's not a great experience if you lose or break your phone, you have to contact them get a new physically sim sent out and put in new phone activate and then change back to an esim, that was my experience with a few esim providers,

I don't need one anymore so have normal, but was a pain ... Often setup isn't as simple either you can tell they haven't got onboarding setup yet

Question.... I am with EE. When I got my new iPhone 15, as I set it up by transfering everything from my iPhone 12, it said I can convert to an eSIM rather than take the SIM out of my iPhone 12. I did this and it worked perfectly.

What would I do in the future if I wanted the eSIM on a different phone as I have no details for the eSIM as Apple did everything for me.
    boboxxb's avatar
You can request esim via your ee account, just login to your account and go to request replacement esim.
  15. YourWellWisher's avatar
Well if say, o2 were doing esims, could i get 4 or 5 numbers on just one esim?
That way i can have lots of priority offers by changing to different numbers with that same phone and esim in it?
    :/ 🤪 😜🤷‍♂️😁
    cynikev's avatar
Yes, but you'd have to pay for each of the 4 or 5 numbers

Just bought a Spusu esim for using on the train to London as I find the data works better on EE than Vodafone when on the train...will test it out next week!

o2 UK are a nightmare with eSims. They don't support payg either. They don't support device transfer either so if you get a new device, you need to get a new QR code/eSim pack. Don't throw away the QR code as it contains your "sim card" number. They also have REALLY poor training with their CS advisors. If you want to go over to eSim then get the pack in-store because the moment the order is created (using the call centre) your existing SIM is disconnected. You need to watch with other providers too, if the eSim is locked to your device. If o2 do it, others must to so too. (edited)

No issues with airlo. Bought numerous UAE esims/top ups. Install before leaving uk, activated within minutes of switching phone on, after landing.

bought Spanish, Dominican Republic and Qatar eSIMs as well from them.

Plus all purchases, get you credit back in your account, which you use on your next purchase.

support is good/not brilliant. But they do acknowledge messages.

Only learnt about esim a day or two ago and somehow managed to buy myself a esim for a trip abroad in a month's time.
Not sure if this is a dumb qstn, but can i install this esim now and but then start using it from when I actually go on the trip which isn't for another few weeks?
    MisterSkinflint's avatar
I recently used a nomad sim in Thailand.
With this sim I installed it around 2 weeks prior to the trip.
It doesn't start however until you activate it. At that time your data etc will begin and the clock will start ticking.

I bought one through Airhub for Thailand a year ago and thought it was absolutely brilliant. I said then, it’s the future for travelling abroad. About to buy one through Airhub again for an upcoming trip to the states.

esim.me and esim.5ber.com might be interesting to some people, although some carriers may not allow the download to these cards and you need an android device to load the esim profile onto the sim.

This is more for people who want to load a travel esim as most domestic carriers can just give you a sim for free anyway.

Specific case but worthwhile pointing out; if you have a physical SIM that you frequently interchange between your smartphone and a seperate 5G router, transferring the SIM over to an eSIM will terminate the physical SIM card, so you won't be able to use it in a router.
In the case of 3 Mobile, the physical SIM becomes inactive immediately - from the point they send out the email with the QR code to you, just something to be aware of about the switching process, may be different for other networks. (edited)
    Daniel_Lane's avatar
Yep unless you have a work SIM and personal and only a single SIM phone it ain't really worth it for a few other reasons
