These will obviously be phased out soon, just like the first steam deck it's hot, loud and has appalling battery life.
    enfluence1's avatar
Man my deck was so hot it nearly bricked itself till I put some PTM 7950 on it but even then it wasn't great, don't think the contact of the heatsink was great.

Diablo 4 was dangerous to play, temps of around 95 to 100c.

Wasn't really that impressed with the deck as the moment it came out I just had issues with it.

Doesn't the sd card burn to a crisp?
    l0gan5's avatar
    Yes, salt and vinegar flavour!

Mine just died (R7 July manf date) and the SD card has melted in the slot.

Powerbanks are not a myth! I HAVE SEEN IT!

Seriously folks, if it's not for you it's not for you. Don't set your expectations overhighly high, learn to use Windows and watch some vids on things you need to do to get more out of this device.

Owned one since day 1 and it kept my daily achievement streak alive cruising across three countries in the med whilst kicking back with cocktails. It's also used in the car when waiting on wife at her yoga classes.

And if worried about the SD card issue, if it's even still an issue since all the fan updates... DON'T USE AN SD CARD. This is 2024! The only SD card I use is the one in my dashcam and even that's not reliable

    Simple.
    The_Sheriff's avatar
It's got an SD card slot. You should be able to use it. Period.

    I would wait

qualcomm have made the M killer mobile cpu
the next asus ROG will ned to have it to be competitive
    we're talking portable ps5
that eats away at the steam deck audience
    the apple mini mac audience

imagine an asus rog that can do ps5 level graphics
and can beat a mac book pro on photoshop
by then windows will have made a viable portable windows experience

everything lines up perfectly if these guys can get their stuff together
personally would drop 700 day 1 for that myself
    Mojomaster1979's avatar
But if you hang on longer you can get the even better revision that's like a PS6.....

Sometimes you just have to pull the trigger and enjoy something.

trying to think og reasons to pick this over a deck..... just cant
this needs to be sub 400
    JohnAbraham's avatar
Steam deck can't run triple a games. For example horizon runs at 20fps at times, where as on the Rog it runs at 70fps easy. (edited)
  7. Fili83's avatar
This or the Steam Deck Oled?
    Pokkai's avatar
Each are completely different, both have positive and negative points, do your research (YouTube.)

Steam Deck OLED: Screen, Battery Life, Simple UI.

Ally: More Powerful, Windows, Easier to Run Launchers other than Steam, Game Pass.

Fantastic machine and has far exceeded my expectations.
    drummerman's avatar
Do you know if this would run cs2 at over 60fps?

I got mine before the new year. The first thing I told myself was, 'What's the point of an SD card? Reliability is rubbish.' The second thing I did was upgrade to a 4TB drive. Now, all arcade and other games are on it. Then, I installed Oculus so I can pair my Oculus, which works really well. Next, I got Kodi and installed RDP to remotely set up an FTP server to transfer content if I want. Let me tell you, this will last even when version ten comes out. Most of those moaning are the ones who can't afford to have one.

It doesn't even have a release date, spec, pricing. It will be months away.
  13. basergorkobal's avatar
This is now at a competitive price point compared to SD OLED.
For the right person the Ally is probably a better buy.
For the average Joe SD is probably superior.
Especially when you consider it can be had for £200 less for the base model.
    Rone's avatar
Gave my brother my gaming PC. It took 2 weeks for me to go to his house and have to install a fresh windows 11 from usb. Before that, I had to guide him how to install on another drive, etc etc etc etc . So i can see where you're coming from in terms of this being suited for the right person. I do kind of think the SD can be a little overwhelming for the even more avg Joe if they want to increase their FPS as such.

That being said, it's great to see the competition in handheld ramping up as well as the price dropping across the board. (edited)

For anyone waiting to pull the trigger do it. As a PS5 and XBox owner I’ve been waiting for a decent handheld that’s smaller than a tank (steam deck), powerful, that plays both Xbox and steam games. This thing is amazing and I highly recommend it. With MS soon opening up gaming to play your own library remotely, it makes it a powerhouse for mobile gaming. Do it. Do it nooooow!

Do you know if this can get train simulator classic? I know it's available on PC but dovetail games (dev) mentioned something about 'steam' games. The train sim is specific to what I need for route learning for a job but don't want to buy a PC unless no other option. Thank you. (edited)

I agree, I just hope that in the next iteration they improve the quality of the thumbsticks and make the screen half an inch to an inch bigger, my old eyes struggle sometimes 🤪
  18. dgh89's avatar
    45min battery life.
    martinmarv's avatar
Or 3 hours, depends whether you are willing to mess around with settings. I'd agree it's not for the faint hearted. It's not like a Switch that you pick up and just use, you need to define settings for each game and choose your balance of quality / performance / battery life

I don't really know much about gaming pcs and handhelds but I've been told they don't last longer than 4-5 years is this true and would it be the same with this?
    richardb70's avatar
Not sure what you mean? They stop working?

Yeah, the price is dropping fast. From £700 at launch less than a year ago to £500 now.

Not sure on this or Legion Go because of it 1440p 120hz, anyones input on which one they would get? Alot more deals on the ROG than the Go to
    JohnAbraham's avatar
Legion go according to some is uncomfortable to hold. Ignoring the negatives this thing rocks but a revised version might come out at the end of the year but will be expensive. (edited)

Lots of comments for the average Joe on here and you’ve all given me a headache lol BUT for an average Joe what should I be looking at. I’m currently playing Batman (deal off here) on my kids switch :/

I've had an Ally for a couple of days now and I am very impressed. I like to have a good tinker with settings and stuff and so far have PGA 2k3 and Sociable Soccer working like a dream - I'm not a massively serious gamer! Xbox Game Pass streaming is the best I've ever experienced and don't get my started on emulation. I have never had a Steam Deck so can't compare personally but a lot of my mates have them and do nothing but praise them.
