About this deal

For the size and price of this remote controlled car it is ridiculously quick, capable of speeds of 70KM/H! This is thanks to its lithium polymer battery and powerful 540 motor that are usually reserved for bigger more expensive models. This is the newer "B" version with bigger and faster motor.

The 70KM/H speed claim from the manufacturer has been checked and the model reached over 72KM/H! The 540 size motor is big and powerful for a model of this size as is the two cell lithium battery that gives the buggy all of its speed. To handle the high power the model is fitted with upgraded aluminium drive shafts, drive cups and central shaft. To help keep it under control at the high speeds it has front and rear differentials, hobby grade suspension and 4 wheel drive system. The RC car comes fully assembled and complete with everything you need to get outside and hit the road apart from 4 normal AA batteries for the remote.

How long will the AA batteries last on something like this ?

At 6-10 mins play time probably add the spare battery for about another £23 (edited)
    Scott_Ellington's avatar
Months, they are fitted to the controller not the car so have tiny current drain

This is an older RC car, if someone wants something for themselves or the youngsters have a look at the FTX Tracer for around the same money. AliExpress does a brushless version called the 16889 pro or something like that.. should be able to get that plus 3 batteries for around £80. Worth it all day long.
    KiloBravo's avatar
Any idea if that be better than the mjx hyper go too? Was looking at the tracer but heard the brushless mjx might be better.

Worth putting the make WLToys as they do some pretty good stuff.

Don't go for 1:18 scale. About the size of your hand, any small bump on any surface will send it flying.

These are really good beginner cars. Plenty of spare parts available and alloy upgrades. I would add 2000 CST oil in the shocks or replace with the alloy ones as a starter.

Nitro R/C is a pain. Especially for kids.

With nitro you spend more time fiddling about with the engine, glow plug, after burn oil and setting the fail safe button (so if the car loses connection with the remote control then it will stop rather than drive full speed into a tree).

Electric is the way to go really. (edited)
    Arkz's avatar
    Okay... But, this is electric.

Don't buy this, buy second hand as depreciation on the electric cars is really bad at the moment - oh wait (edited)

You joke but you can bag a seriously good hobby spec RC buggy on ebay for the same kind of price (ansmann/tamiya etc)

Mjx cars are really good and if you don't mind buying them from AliExpress you can get them for around this sort of money, there's normally some deals available.my son has one it goes about 40mph on a 3s battery.
And it has a brushless motor, oil shocks, separate receiver and ECU all metal gears.
    Rolefitleader's avatar
Hi, depends on your needs ,1:18 is better suited to flat smooth surfaces really ,I don't think I'd go for anything smaller personally not for outdoor use .mjx and WLtoys do some good RC cars .I have cars from both manufacturers .
We have a few cars lol

I have this and confirm it is very fast! One thing though the shocks are not great and worth upgrading from plastic to metal as well as suspension.

We have some real good fun but you need lots of space as its a fast car. Cant really use it in doors.

We used it like 4 times but last time we went all out and the car flipped over and the suspension broke. Quite a few vis on youtube showing you how to upgrade it.

    Hope it helps

I have had this car for a number of years, but need some batteries for it so haven't used it for a couple.
It's really fast, and because of the short wheelbase, it does flip pretty crazily. My son abused it and the front suspension mount broke. I 3d printed it a couple of times, but it broke, so replaced it with a metal one and has been good so far. It does seem to be a pretty weak spot.
I also added some silicone oil to the suspension, which helped the handling.
It's definitely a fun car, but will break (especially with kids driving it!) and need parts replacing and I seem to remember the battery size was a bit weird.

I have had this for years too, it is pretty fast! I went for a larger size though as using it on my driveway the stones would sometimes get inside the wheel and stop it turning but easy to get them out. This is a WLTOYS A959-B, seems a good price for it really.

18th scale is really small, only uses a 2s battery. While it's tiny to the point it'll get stuck in any grass, it'll be a little pocket rocket and would be great for the young ones.

Of course these days in the £100 range, you could probably stretch all the way into the 10th scale range (especially if going used)

I bought one of those for my son, he hadn’t driven rc before, he was 11yo and we went to Santapod for the weekend, they had an rc car race, my son wanted to race his car, but I didn’t want him to get upset because they were all experienced racers with self built cars, he came second out of 30 in the drag race. That’s how fast and good this car is, and my son of course, bless him.

Reminds me of my old Tamiya Grass Hopper from the 80's.

Looks very similar to the tamiya hotshot that I used to race

3 hours charge for 6 minutes play... It's a no from me. I just can't get onboard with the battery life of these things. Bet it's fun though if you got dough for a bunch of spare batteries.
    Zek's avatar
I use a SkyRC iMax B6AC V2 so you can charge at whatever speed, though I guess if you don't want to get into the hobby you would just use the supplied charger

Bought one of these about 3 years ago. It is fast, but it has a lot of problems. The plastic steering and suspension areas are weak and snap pretty easily. The transmission dogbones are weak and will bend or twist. Wheel bearings de-shield if you look at them wrong.
It also sits very low so is totally useless in grass.
I did an all-metal chassis replacement, bigger wheels and tyres, battery upgrades and it's a much better model now - but as it is out of the box it's pretty weak.

I'd advise against this and go for a 1:10 scale brushless instead.

Started off with this car a few years back then escalated, other cars are 1:10 and 1:8 respectively for scale.

Any recommendations or deals for similar spec on 1:1 scale?

I went with one of these, but I get some "evils" from all the families on the beach when you've finished for the day.

Are people able to get free delivery for this car? It’s trying to charge me £5.99 which is a bit much given the cost of the item.
    PonJaul76's avatar
It's not strange for the free delivery to be on a £100 spend on most sites now

I wasn't entirely certain but it does come with the standard charger from the q and a, note servos are not waterproof so may need to be a little careful on conditions (edited)

Advoid Nitrotek at all cost, they are terrible.
  22. dark_shadow's avatar
Any recommendations for same spec in a 1:14/1:2 scale?

LC RACING models from DMS RACING.

This as already pointed out is a wltoys and I have had this for years as does my Son and other similar models too. They are great for the price and there are facebook groups dedicated to these that details all the mods to do to them to make them a very capable cheap rc car.

It helps if you have other rc cars and a proper battery charger which charges these batteries in about 30 minutes.

Look up BigBeard RC if you buy this or any other WL Toys rc cars.

The speed IS impressive, but a 3hr charge for 6 mins runtime!!
    Roger_Irrelevant's avatar
Well the idea is you'd have have a few SkyRC chargers and charge a load of them up in advance.
