Awful quality and actually only around 25ltrs in each bag. Oh and its got bits of plastic, glass, and it stinks (edited)

Had the same issues and bought loads of bags of the top soil which was equally poor. Not sure how they can get away with selling it as 50litres.

Worth a check, my council offers free "soil conditioner" compost at its waste processing centre. Turn up and tske as much as you like.

I'm no longer bothering this year, after enjoying the great satisfaction of growing from seed for several decades. No decent compost available, no effective slug pellets (even the daffodils were eaten this year before they were blown over).
More profit to commercial growers and nurseries and no chance to grow anything effectively at home anymore. A sad day for hobby gardeners. And do you really believe the peat free hype...

Just be aware, folks, that this is
    not
a potting or seed compost, but is recycled garden waste (ex-Councils) and will be best used for digging into your garden as a soil conditioner

Never ever use this indoors. Not only is it shit for plants it's also a Haven for gnat flies.

Got 4 of them last year from B&M on offer and I would say avoid. Especially not for seedlings and other small plants as they dry out like rock which can’t let any plant to grow within. My growing cycle last year got so out of sync with the seasonal timings because of this soil as I wasted one whole month waiting for seedlings to grow in this soil.

Mirroring everyone else's comments! I bought ten bags from Homebase last year and it is awful in terms of screening. As well as the common for cheap compost large sticks/bark and the occasional bit of plastic, I counted 5 large shards of glass across the ten bags. That's a horrendous ratio... (edited)

There was a tooth brush in one of the bags I got

Quality is average at best with this stuff.. sticks and random rubbish in some bags

Peat free was the worst thing that ever happened to compost.

Its people selling old recycling waste as 'compost' thats the problem

I would not buy this due to the poor quality. Better to get peat free compost from B&Q (3 x 50l for £15), Aldi or Lidl. Use coco coir for seedings (blocks on Ebay work out cheapest). Best still, make your own compost.

Many good guides on youtube, check out Huw Richards or Charles Dowding to start and go from there

Absolute garbage. I bought some and the guy in the garden center told me not to use it pots as it doesn't have enough food in it but it's OK to add to soil? It's as dry as a bone and by far the worst I've ever bought and they're soil is crap too
  15. mrheap's avatar
Its absolutely garbage 'compost', you would probably be better using twigs and the contents of old teabags

Had this stuff before and I actually found old cut up 'CDs' in with the compost. This compost also absolutely stank of which any good compost should not smell.

You don't have to use emoji.
    Can say shit now.
