Too many bad reviews on Amazon , apparently people are getting hgst drives dated from 2018 and with 25k hours I'd rather not risk it thanks
    DryUrEyesMate's avatar
I think the enterprise drives are rated at MTBF 2.5 million hours. A high MTBF output means fewer problems with your drive will occur over its lifetime (edited)

    Got my 3 delivered today.

These require the 3rd pin taped off with, none conductive tape or a molex to sata power converter
(I used electrical insulating tape I had about the house)

Here is a link to a tutorial on how to do it along with a youtube video from the tutorial

    instructables.com/How…s-/

    or the youtube video below

After taping off the 3rd pin they power on and are seen by the bios,
I have them running smart tests in Unraid currently....so far so good, no errors

    1st Drive - WD Brand
    Power on hours: 27264 (3y, 1m, 12d, 0h)
    Total lbas written (751 TB)
    Total lbas read (974 TB)
    No smart errors

    2nd Drive - HGST Brand
    Power on hours: 19702 (2y, 2m, 28d, 22
    Total lbas written (741 TB)
    Total lbas read (892 TB)
    No smart errors

    3rd Drive - HGST Brand
    Power on hours: 36999 (4y, 2m, 20d, 15h)
    Total lbas written (1.12 PB)
    Total lbas read (1.27 PB)

Will update if i find errors (edited)

How long did they take to dispatch after you ordered?

I purchased 2 of these on Thursday I believe and they're stuck on "Not Yet Dispatched" just wondering if that's normal or not.

Buy the extended warranty, 4 years for 6 quid, still great value
    nastropc's avatar
How do you do that? When I click buy now it doesn’t offer an extended warranty option.
  4. kiteless's avatar
I bought a couple of these recently. Around 27k power on hours but only a handful of startups. Looks to have been sat in a someone’s storage array for 3 years then replaced.

Passed an unraid preclear and working happily. I got the cheap extended warranty so if they do die I’ll get my money back. Given it’s under half the price of new even with the warranty it’s not a bad deal.
    flying_carpet's avatar
Does it include sata power cable? Thanks.
  5. nova999's avatar
I just received mine.... it come with power on time of 38366 hours.... that 4 year and 4 month

S.M.A.R.T says the drive is healthy but currently in to around 24 hours of doing preclear on the drive to see if any is any possible error.....

Used old hard drive not worthwhile taking the risk, end of life for datacentres
    treb's avatar
These are far from end of life in reality though, they'll probably last 30 years.
  7. UltimateOutlaw's avatar
30day warranty ? Reviews suggest 5 years but surely not ?
    DryUrEyesMate's avatar
Warranty is useless when you lose all your important data
  8. RickyWong's avatar
Thought this is brand new. Wouldn’t touch refurb drive tbh
  9. lucyferror's avatar
Clicked HOT and then realised it's NOT new. Wouldn't go for it even as a backup drive but that's my preference and I know what will people say lol
  10. italkapple's avatar
Pass. Don’t buy used mechanical drives at this price.
    aLV426's avatar
Where can you get them cheaper?

People complaining about receiving drives with run time... These are refurbished drives. They are going to have some run time unless SMART info was wiped before it was sent out which wont happen because its akin to rolling back the mileage counter on your car before you sell it off.

If you get one with 0hrs on the clock, The drive has either been tampered with and reset or is genuinely a new drive that you are receiving in which case youre lucky.

Ive bought multiple refurbs off WD and have never received one with wiped SMART data.

At least these drives come directly from Amazon instead of some dodgy 3rd party seller. (edited)
    DJBlewitt's avatar
0 hours could be due to a new controller PCB.
  12. DryUrEyesMate's avatar
I know people that have ordered these before and they came with 0 Hours of run time, I have ordered one and will see if my refurbished drive is the same.
    ttttd's avatar
Those were the ones listed as new, some had 0 hours and some had a very low amount (like 100ish). I think all the ones listed as refurbished have had extensive use.
  13. r9000's avatar
I bought two of these and they have both been great. I did full checks on them, SMART short, full format, SMART long, performance testing, all OK. They looked brand new, and both had about 3.5 years on them.

I voted this cold though because I only paid £90 each delivered on Amazon for them.

Bought a couple of similar drives in my unraid server. 3 drives have to fail before I experience data loss. With the extended warranty they are decent value. For the extended warranty to be valid they have to be classed as amazon renewed. (edited)
    welshblob's avatar
Is the extended warranty the panel that pops up when you put in your basket? 3 or 4 years for either side of a £5 per drive? Given it pops up when you put it in your basket then I assume its applicable to this drive?
  15. Josu's avatar
not a bad price, around 9 per tb
    yhyhyhyhyh's avatar
    Quick maths.
  16. blurtontony's avatar
    Ordered thanks
  17. ministrymason's avatar
Would this be good for a media server?
    Minstadave's avatar
I've got 2 in a NAS and they work perfectly.
  18. Conkers816's avatar
If anyone sees this, I'd appreciate your thoughts.

I bought a 12tb WD Red for my Synology NAS drive on Friday and got it yesterday.

Set everything up and copied backups back over, installed Plex and was waiting for it to finish scanning the libraries when the drive light goes orange and the storage manager tells me the drive is now "critical" and needs replacing.

Ran the quick SMART test which subsequently finished and returned the drive to a "Healthy" status with everything green again.

I'm still thinking of sending it back though as I don't really want to take any chances.

Would anyone do the same and send it back ?. Or would it be worth running a full SMART test just to see ?. That's apparently a small matter of 20 hours .. (edited)

Use Hard Drive Sentinel to check further.
  19. Garble's avatar
Good price - anything £10 or less per TB is good
  20. LRGM's avatar
Just take the insurance and put into RAID for your expendable big files.
  21. flying_carpet's avatar
How is this one compared with Seagate Enterprise Capacity v7 ST12000NM0127 (amazon.co.uk/Sea…17f) for similar price?
  22. Aikijujutsuka's avatar
    Great price!
I posted a similar deal for an 8TB drive and had similar negative comments..
(I bought 4 refurb 8TB drives, and they're all still in good health)
    Heat added.
  23. AKG86's avatar
Had a WD fail and lost all my DJing music once. Got a new drive under warranty and sold it on. Would never buy a WD HDD again, least of all a refurb
    bigpapa's avatar
    That's your fault not WD
  24. DryUrEyesMate's avatar
    And they have all gone
  25. SomeJohn's avatar
    Deal still active
  26. welshblob's avatar
I checked earlier and these were showing out of stock after the Amazon promotion ended. Appear to be back in stock at the same price now.
  27. marks's avatar
Taken a punt using 2 as a stripped raid which will be backing up a raid 5
    daddybr00's avatar
    You mean mirrored raid surely
  28. aLV426's avatar
I was trying to justify this purchase and of course when I finally decided to buy it it reports the following:
    Currently unavailable.
We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock.

    cool

Just got round to putting mine in an external Hard Drive Enclosure but nothing is showing when I connect to my laptop. I can feel the Hard Drive striking up, but nothing showing in Windows. Is there something I'm not doing correctly?
*edit* sorted now in disk management. Formatted to exFaT now got to figure how to copy the drive in my Synology Drive to this external. (edited)
  30. donkeydavid's avatar
My drive is coming up at 959 days, 23016 hours. I'm guessing that's not too bad?
  31. dodsonchris's avatar
52531776_1.jpgStill at least one in stock by the looks of things. (edited)
