If anyone is interested, this is a pretty foolproof method for getting your temperature right for smoking:

Add your coals, eco firelights, lumps of whatever wood you are using - keep these away from the core flames.

Leave the dome open for 10 minutes. Don’t be tempted to stoke or rake the charcoals

Close the lid and open the top and bottom vents fully for 2 minutes, allowing air to flow through.

Check the thermometer, you should see the internal temperature rising

After two minutes, you can adjust the vents to achieve your target cooking temperature

Your smoker will now burn for over 10 hours without the need to top up

Still easily cook a meal for 3 to 4 with a but of planning.

Is this worth it - seems massively cheaper than a Kamodo Joe - how big is the compromise?

It’s actually not a bad piece of kit…especially at this price. In comparison to a Komodo Joe Jnr this is smaller10.5” as opposed to 13.5”. Also in reality to do any slow cooking you would need additional bits.

Looks like the Lidl one we bought for 90 odd some years ago. Great for two people and very economical with charcoal. Don't overheat though, as the inner pot can crack and will be difficult to replace.
The stainless grill is very solid and fits nicely in the dishwasher too
    Excellent deal

This ranks as one of my all time most pointless purchases, 3 years in it’s not been used once , it’s too small for anything worthwhile and has become that annoying thing in my garden I’d like rid of

I can’t see how it’s useless unless you have another bbq. Get it hot and you can do two steaks over coals and finish with chimmichurri sauce. I personally do a pack of wings on it and they come out great.
