Do not upgrade the BIOS on these under any circumstances. I did it, the fan keeps ramping up and down. It's a known issue and you cannot downgrade afterwards.

I vaguely remember a youtube video where a guy bought four of these PCs which were sold as broken, and he went through each one trying to get it to work. For a couple of them i think he used a special tool to fix the bios.

Work use these pretty much extensively everywhere and honestly unless you just want to word process they are vastly underpowered and the hard drives are pointless in a 128gb format when windows will take up 20-30gb with no additional apps at all 🤦🏻‍♂️

additionally we have had several that have died for no apparent reason and some forget their bios settings completely and wouldn't boot and they were literally only a few months old at the time Dell had to send a technician out to verify it wasn't our fault and ended up replacing at least 20 units 🤦🏻‍♂️ (edited)

What does your work use them for?

got the 3050 i7 16GB for streaming to my projector, great lil unit , footprint is minimal

I thought wow it's got a (mobile) 3060 in it? But no, it's just the name of the product and has onboard graphics. What type of ram do you upgrade this with? Desktop or laptop? (edited)
    Boiled_tato's avatar
    SODIMM (laptop). 2 slots.

Nice little box for a few tasks. probably better than any cheap n100 mini PC.

    Just thought I'd add this...

Same single core perf, lower multi core, but also much lower power consumption and with hardware accelerated AV1 decode. I would consider n97/n100 personally

E waste from 2018. Wouldn't pay more than £40 for these. The comoany likely got paid to remove them from a corporate business. (edited)
    flashrender's avatar
Lol what. They ain’t ewaste lol. And no they aren’t getting removed from corporate environment just yet coz both intel and dell support these with bios updates and security patches. Also these are quite capable machines for anything but gaming. I infact downgraded from an 10700k to this since I stopped gaming. Sure I upgraded the processor to something slightly faster and added RAM to make it 16GB but yeah.

Context: I’m into software and IT, so I do use my computer quite extensively. Not just for some random browsing.

This machine with added RAM, is enough for 97% of the population who don’t game. (edited)

Got quite a few of these Micro Form Factor PCs from Dell. They’re great for strapping to the back of displays for an “all in one” effect. Just bear in mind that many don’t come with WiFi.

Dell make a monitor stand with a slot for these PCs, look on ebay and find a used one for about £20

Makes for a neat solution, especially with Bluetooth keyboard/mouse

    e.g.ebay.co.uk/itm…028

Buy some more ram which can be found pretty cheap (especially if you don't mind 2nd hand), swap out the boot drive to a bigger one.

Awesome little PC for homelab use, can use it run plex or even run openWRT on it if you buy one of those pcie to gigabit NICs from aliexpress.
  9. mywife's avatar
These are great little PCs! Easy to upgrade RAM and other components.
Easy access to drivers and any support issues, not that I had any. Didn't miss a beat.
Can easily add a 3rd display output for around a tenner, well it was then... seems like £20-30 now...

Used one (i7-9700T) for a couple of years on a triple display for office type work with one or two memory hungry apps before getting round to upgrading 5 months ago or so.

The one I had was cheap on the electric too at 35W. Worth checking the CPU spec... (edited)
    khang365's avatar
Hi,how to add the third display output plz?

Some from other sellers with four times the ram (16GB) for only about £5 more at the moment

Like these at £119 ebay.co.uk/itm…515 (edited)

Any good for an arcade emulator machine with Batocera?
    TheHoss's avatar

Check this video out from ETAPrime. Granted it's a 3050 he's using but i'd imagine it's similar to this machine here.
  13. Adster's avatar
Would this be powerful enough to use as a dedicated server for something like conan exiles with 5-6 players?
    fryitup's avatar
    Most likely.
I have used a less powerful cpu (xeon 1220 v2) to run minecraft classic and bedrock and valheim servers in docker in parallel with other applications
  14. evo6's avatar
I bought one of these a few weeks ago with 16GB ram, 256gb SSD, same cpu for £98. There was a offer on ebay, 10% off refurbs. Cracking little machine.

I bought ones of these to go with it amazon.co.uk/Wav…W4G and replaced my server with this setup!

    4gb of ram wasn't enough in 2014 nevermind 2024
    TheHoss's avatar
It's a good thing ram is upgradable on this then isn't it? (edited)
  16. redserpent's avatar
I would get the N97 Gmtec G5 instead. Comes with 12GB ram and a 256GB SSD. Smaller and more modern. gmktec.com/pro…-g5

That's a belter there! Do you have one, recommended? I've seen a detailed YouTube review, looks good. I need something strictly to leave behind the TV.

Got one of these with a 9100T, makes a great emulation machine. Runs everything up to Gamecube/PS2, game dependent 720p or 1080p resolution. Looks great.

eBay have 3040 and 3050 for about 70 quid (edited)

Nah. I just bought a Lenovo ThinkCentre M720q 9400T, 16GB RAM, 256 GB SSD for £100. It even has a PCIe slot for expansion if you want. (edited)
    InsaneNutter's avatar
I added a quad port nic to one of these and its happily been running pfSense for the last two and a half years.

A great little machine that uses little power and its pretty much silent.
  20. ahenners's avatar
Anyone running one of these with some VMs on and some form of network attached storage? With a ram upgrade it looks like its a nice low power compute unit
    the__cat's avatar
Yes, I do. I have 64GB RAM in mine but worth noting hyperthreading is not supported.
  21. SonOfSam's avatar
I'm thinking of getting one if these for dedicated music playing/streaming for the kitchen. What is the smallest monitor I could hook it up to? Or what could I use in place of a monitor?
    SonOfSam's avatar
Actually I'm not thinking if getting one of these but something similar, but the monitor question still stands

    Perfect Home Assistant server
    ashman33's avatar
Dunno. I’m running home assistant in a docker on an Android tv box running Coreelec. Seems ok so I’m not sure if a while pc setup is overkill for home assistant? I guess as raspberry pi’s are not cheap anymore a pc like in the deal is probably an option

Currently using this as my home server:

What's the difference between "Pristine" and "Excellent", besides the obvious £9.50?
    C0mm0d0re_K1d's avatar
Pristine should be better than excellent?

I'm torn between this and an N100 (I have 2 already). It'd be for running proxmox nginx. I'm guessing it'd be better getting another n100 or similar.

Hi All. It was understood that these PC do not come up with a back disk CD. You have to create your own back by use a pen drive. Any advice or good YOUTUBE video. Which can go through the steps for me? Cheers.
  29. sirmusclealot's avatar
I been using one of these for two years. I have 16gb of ram and a 500gb SSD. It runs some games okay too, FF7 with all the mods on for example. I guess if you really wanted you could get one of those m.2 to PCIE adaptors and even run a gfx card externally.
  30. ResveZ's avatar
From the title i thought this had a 3060 in there haha

If only it wasn't a DELL!
  32. WALKONBY's avatar
This is a OK value deal, on the proviso you won't need the USB-C which is on the front panel of the 70xx series if I'm not mistaken. I have the 7050 [same form factor] and the USB-C port is so crucial ... for me at least ... to conect a USB-C HUB to avail/extend ports and memory cards etc. (edited)
