Amazon was selling this at similar price during prime day, so it looks like a good deal.

Would a pair of these make a great simple sound system for the tv.

Well.... sorta. You can use various combos of Echo speakers as surround-ish setups, anything from two regular Echos up to two Echo Studios and an Echo Sub for a very beefy 2.1 setup.

The main downside (as far as I understand it) is that you will only get the surround effect when using with an Amazon streaming device - so Fire Stick, Fire Cube etc. So it's a bit limited... for example it won't work with a PS5 plugged into the TV, or with a Sky box, or whatever. I could be wrong but that's what I've understood from reading about it (I was tempted to try it myself).

Honestly you're better to just look for a comparatively priced dedicated soundbar or surround setup. Some even have Alexa built in, so you can have the best of both worlds.

Having got one when the refurbished ones were going for around £120, I'd say that's about the most these are worth. In fairness, the refurbished looked like new to me and it's probably Amazon just shifting stock. It's OK as a single speaker for background sound but that's about it. The sound is very unnatural but I don't think this is trying to be Hi-Fi. Considering these are usually over £200, this is a good deal but I would have hated to pay over £200 in the first place.
