realistically, is this going to perform any better than a SATA drive?

Everyone just saying 'yes' makes me laugh.
There is only one situation where this noticeably outperforms SATA drives, that's sequential fire reads/writes (i.e. transferring large files).

For everything else, you'll likely not notice a difference.
Then again, a SATA SSD with DRAM (like the Samsung 870 EVO Hatsune mentioned below, which can be had for less money) will outperform this when it comes to OS/app/game loading times.

These are cheap because they are QLC NAND and DRAM-less, not the best combination.
But they are cheap for what they are, so if cheap storage is all you need and you want to get the files on the drive quickly, these are fine.
I'd still go with the 870 EVO

Just don't go using this Crucial for long term large file writes, like video editing. (edited)

Been looking for a higher cap drive, this looks good. Need to Google for dram cache unlikely given price

This doesn't have DRAM. If you're looking for a good SSD drive and not too attached to the M.2 form factor and NVMe performance, though, the Samsung 870 EVO SATA SSD 4TB (with 4GB DRAM) is currently £114 on Amazon after cashback (deal expired, drive now £145 after cashback), deal is back. When this size get to about £100 then we can say they are getting cheap. Over £100 still expensive for a storage.

Still not decent enough..has to go down further and match the HDD price level they are replacing.

It doesn't look like it. Search for P3 in the amazon comments. (edited)
