This is sold by Amazon UK directly, not a third party. They've had their price around the £320 mark for a bit, so they seem to have brought it back down overnight.

This is the best gaming CPU option for someone on AM4 that just wants a 'drop in' upgrade rather than changing everything and moving to AM5

I've asked this on here before but i'll ask again!

    Currently on 3600 CPU with 32gb, 3600mhz ddr4 RAM and 3060ti fe graphics card. I game at 1440p. I don't do any creative/editing stuff.

I was more interested in moving to 5800x but the deals seem to have dried up on those so i'm wondering if i might as well bite the bullet and go for the 5800x3d at this price. Sell my CPU for 60-70 so for around £220 net outlay i know i won't have to worry about moving from the AM4 platform for a few years.

Any opinions on what i should do? I can't justify the cost of going to AM5 either. (edited)

If you play a game like valorant, with 300fps+ like I do. A 5800xd will double your fps coming from a 3600 cpu. I know because I had done the same upgrade, but it really does come down to what games you are playing and what you want to achieve.

I bought this recently and it did not improve my COD benchmarks, with my 3080 FE being the bottleneck at 1440p unfortunately. I don’t tend to play many CPU intensive games so sent it back and sticking with 3600X for now.

People keep posting this, but this is just the standard price now. It's not a deal.

I'll say that 5800X3D is starting to look less and less appealing as AM5 boards and DDR5 get cheaper.

I think if you're still on Zen 2 or something with an AM4 board, then yea, this can make sense, but I think otherwise, the extra investment into AM5 will likely pay off in the long run, without really sacrificing performance outside of very specific applications(though Zen 4 is also faster in plenty of others).

Honestly, even if you have AM4 already and some Zen 2 CPU, you can save £100 or so by going with a regular 5800X as an upgrade option as well. Normal Zen 3 prices have dropped so much and are seriously cheap and high value options. Is £100 really worth the extra performance of Vcache? Possibly, but again, application-dependent. Though perhaps an argument can be made that they'll be more 'next gen' compliant than standard Zen 3.

Kind of a weird situation in which there's a lot of 'right' answers as to what to get in terms of CPU's, and people will really just need to figure out what their budget is and what their expectations and needs are.

Considering the performance isn't that far away from a 7800x3d I'd say it's still quite appealing to everyone and anyone on am4. AM5 is still too expensive for most to make the jump

With 1440p, Ryzen 9 5900X was 5% faster than the Ryzen 7 5800X3D - not the best gaming CPU on AM4 fyi

Bit pointless your repeating posts. Let's say the 5800X3D did 100 fps your rant posts basically are saying 5900X does 105fps........... Now if actually had knowledge about the 5900X you could of said, for same gaming performance and better work flow performance, while being the same price, the 5900X might be a better choice.

I've been looking at this this morning wondering if I should upgrade lol.
Then I am like but I could go AM5...decisions lol.

I was also looking at the 5800x, just for gaming do you think this 5800x3D is worth £100 more? (edited)

What's your current CPU? If you're already on AM4 the 3D is a no brainer.

Looking to upgrade my pc for retro/emulator, was looking to get a 5600x, is this overkill for that? I've already got 2 other Ryzen PCs with good specs, so this one doesn't have to be too powerful.

Current spec: Asrock 420 chipset itx mobo, Ryzen 1600 and RX 580 8gb.

Thinking of upgrading to Ryzen 5600x (or this, worth it?) Also upgrade GPU to 6750 xt (Currently £402) at Scan.

    Any suggestions?

Seems overkill to me...I guess it depends on what you mean by 'retro/emulator'. If you mean from like the 8/16 bit eras, then of course you don't need anything like this. Your existing spec would be fine for that. Not too sure on more modern era emulation though.

What's the heat like from this bad boy? I've got a 5700x (which I paid a ridiculous amount for new recently...) but I've always been strangely drawn to this chip.

Not sure if it'd be worth it or not? Might just wait for my next gen. upgrade.

    Heated OP!

This always tempts me but i'm never sure what my upgrade path should be.

Currently happy with my system; 3900x, 16gb ram, 2080ti. Main use is a mix between 1440p gaming and photo/video editing.

Not sure if this CPU would be worth it for the gains in games but a loss in cores/threads for photo/video editing.

I have an i7-4790 paired with a 1080ti. It's good but starting to show it's age and I want something more capable in the cpu department. If I upgrade I'm thinking am4 or am5. Am4 is dead so I'm wondering if I should go with am5? Or does it make more sense to go with am4. I keep my CPUS for a long time, how long would this 5800x3d last? Would it see me through another 10 years? If not should I go with am5 and then upgrade to it's final version after however many years? Decisions decisions

Even though I posted this and I'm on AM4 myself, I would say go to AM5 instead of AM4 if you're doing a full system makeover. This sort of CPU is going to be more targetted at people already on AM4 that want to max out the AM4 platform instead of switching to AM5.

In some games it owns the 5600x, as in +50fps owns: Far Cry 6, Dying Light 2, Spider Man Remastered

In others there is almost no difference: AC Valhalla, Red Dead Redemption 2, Cyberpunk, Horizon Zero Dawn.

Either way, at this price it is not worth the upgrade for me but for some it might be.

    Getting cheaper!

Still hard to justify a 300 note upgrade and staying on AM4 though.

How much does a used 5600X get you these days? Guessing around £100?
That makes the move from 5600X to 5800X3D £200 hmmm (edited)

If you play VR, it's totally worth it. Upgraded from 5600x to this and it's such a huge difference for net £200 (traded in 5600x at CEX)

What have thought VR would be more GPU bottlenecked as you'd want the higher resolution.
