Why do people buy this crap.

It's cheap. Same reason people buy Renault or Dacia
Edited by: "tan159" 3 h, 43 m ago

My problem with these huge TVs is I wouldn't know where to put it in my living room without it totally dominating the whole room or covering at least part of a window when placed in a corner. A friend installed their new 55' TV above the fireplace for that same reason but his wife complained that it gave her a stiff neck because it was not at a comfortable eye level, that it looked too chavvy above the fireplace and that the heat from the fire would shorten the TVs life. He ended up putting the large mirror he'd replaced with the TV back up, selling the TV for two thirds of the cost and getting a 42" TV to fit in the corner. Lesson learnt, fingers burnt.

It seems very much with the class of 2017 LCDs that all the big manufacturers with the exception of Sony (who really dropped the ball with the whole Android fiasco in the 2016 range so it couldn't really get any worse) have brought out LCDs that are not as good as last year's offerings. Samsung are particularly guilty of this as none of them even come close to the KS7000/8000/9000 range yet go for a similar price. In the end it really boils down to how much you are willing to spend and how soon do you want your TV. Wait till Black Friday and you will get plenty of deals as they try to shift as much of their junk stock as they can. Of course you can always go all in and go OLED but thats a story for another night.

You seem to be quite knowledgeable on the topic. Could you recommend a 40-43 inch 4k hdr tv preferably under £500 mostly for watching tv and playing xbox one s?

I found the DX700 pretty comparable to the competition and the reviews of the 2017 E variant have been positive.550cd/m² is plenty of brightness for normal use. You only need more for HDR, and we're years away from that being more than a small minority of viewing. Panasonic and LG's decisions to focus their HDR efforts on OLEDs seem perfectly reasonable ones.

Panasonic really only have one semi passable LCD in the 2017 range and its the EX750 and even then the Panasonic rep in John Lewis tried to tell me that the EX750 is a better TV than the DX902! I told him to go away and behave himself. The EX750 has a premium price tag and a crappy 550 nit peak brightness. If you can find it the only Panny LCD worth buying is the DX902. Its the best LCD on the market even though its 2016 tech.

Love the way you put links to back up your claims

I purchased the 50” version 2 weeks ago and they are hit and miss. The one I got had bad Clouding (DSE) and was replaced. The replacement arrived last Thursday and it’s got horizontal banding along the bottom and middle of the screen.
RIcher Sounds are currently deciding if it can be replaced or not as they are saying it could be a limitation of the tv and another replacement may yield the same results.
to be honest all these sub £1000 TVs are all about the same with class B panels and uniformity issues that can’t demand top money. On HD content the image is stunning but they are no good for watching sports in particular football due to the clouding and banding issues !!32074555-m4PM6.jpg

Looks like this is a newer version of the previous K8500? Looking on places like eBay these Samsung players are extremely popular probably because they are cheapest and often sold in bundle deals with 4K sets. Though I have the One S, I'd consider one of these or the K8500 if they ever go sub £100 as the Xbox One S, though good has minor foibles as a 4K Bluray player and I have build up enough of a collection of films that it would be handy to have a second player for a different room....

The "freedom" of Windows that forces updates (and even tricked people into complete OS upgrades) on users, endlessly mines data no matter how many settings you disable and continually reinstalls UWP app garbage like Candy Crush even when you've removed it numerous times? Oh, and lets not forget the advertising for OneDrive now being pushed in the File Explorer of all places.

Meanwhile, the "frustrated enclosure" of MacOS allows you to - shock, horror - install Windows or any other OS via VM or Boot Camp and run software out of the box that is unavailable on any other platform (iLife, iWork, Garageband, Final Cut Pro etc).

And, yes, I run both Mac and Windows machines and use an Android phone, so I'm not some rabid Apple fanboy. Both platforms have pros/cons but 'Windows as a Service' (and what it may mutate into) represents anything but "freedom".

I managed to get this from AO.com for £900, which includes the £100 cashback offer. Here's my thoughts on it after a week.......

Have had it only a week but I'm very happy with it. The GTX 1060 3gb card runs everything (Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1 etc) on ultra settings in FHD at over 100 fps, never dropping below 60fps. Absolutely no lag or stutter, everything runs buttery smooth. Some sellers state 120hz but they've got it wrong, it's a 60hz screen. Still a fantastic IPS panel though and G-Sync technology really enhances the gaming experience as it prevents screen tearing for seamless graphics. If you turn G-Sync off, you really notice the difference and appreciate what it offers. I've had absolutely no problem with overheating and while the fans do turn on when playing games, they're not at all loud so very happy about that. If you restart the laptop, it takes literally 15 to 20 seconds to boot up and you're ready to go. I can't tell you how pleased I am with this as my 10 year old desktop that it replaced used to take about 5 minutes lol. Build quality is also solid and the only negative is the battery life, which is abysmal..... around 3 hours and when it gets below a percentage of your choosing, battery saving mode and CPU throttling kicks in to save power, meaning your gaming frames per second will drop from 100+ to around 30 with plenty of lag and stutter. However, so long as you keep the charger plugged in, you won't have this problem. As I'm replacing a deskptop pc, mine never leaves the house and is always plugged in so I don't have this problem but if you're going to be away from a power outlet for any length of time then this is definitely going to be an issue for you.

WHO SHOULD BUY THIS........ Anyone who wants a fantastic value for money gaming laptop to play triple A titles such as Titanfall 2, Battlefield 1 etc on ultra settings on a gorgeous FHD screen at 100+ fps with zero lag or stutter AND will have the charger plugged in at all times.

WHO SHOULDN'T BUY THIS........ Anyone who is regularly going to be away from a power outlet for any more than 2 hours at a time.

Hopefully this is good news for gaming laptops if it appears in the UK...
