A lot of phone for the money, and none of the bugs or common issues with older devices in the same lineage as far as I know. The 256GB storage in particular is useful, it really doesn't take a lot to fill up 64GB these days and then you're trapped.

    Are these phones unlocked

and as a future note, all phones in the UK are unlocked (unless they’re ancient, in which you can still unlock them for free no matter the carrier)

I use this phone as a webcam using the Elgato app (which is free) for work calls on the PC / Laptop etc and it’s better than 90% of webcams on the market and for this price cheaper than a lot of the high end ones. A colleague has bought one for a little more than this for this reason and loves it. So might give someone food for thought (edited)

What's wrong with using the laptops camera ? Or a normal 30 pound webcam ?

I still use an old iPhone 7 as my work phone and it’s great. Replaced the battery myself in 30 mins and it’s been spot on ever since.
Plenty of life left in these phones!

Some will tell you the iPhone 7 has audio IC issues which can prematurely end their life, the 8 series has no common flaws I believe. But yes, DIY battery replacement can be a great fix.

I received mine this morning. The screen had a lot of scratches so I've returned it.

Same, really was not what I was expecting as "good"

Picked up a Motorlla G31 for less than £80. Seems a much better bargain than an ancient iPhone

Just check gumtree for a mint iPhone SE 2020 instead. I got one that was basically brand new in box, 98% battery health for £110. There was 2 or 3 mint ones in my area in the £120 region. (edited)

Good tip but also need to be careful and test it well as you are not covered by any protection once you take the device away.
I once bought a phone from Gumtree which all looked great but then a few days later I noticed it randomly disconnects from the network and no longer detects the SIM until the device is restarted. It was an intermittent odd problem that is not easy to detect but thankfully I was able to get the seller to replace it for me for another unit

Would you go for this or pay an extra £40 for the 8plus?

It literally comes down to: do you get extra value from the 2x camera, bigger battery and larger display - only you can answer that. Some people (me included) don't like huge phones.

Seems like a good deal for 256GB storage phone alone(almost). For some reason 64GB version is £119.70(at checkout). Shame red and space grey oos. Only silver and gold left in stock. Heat added. Thanks OP.

Photos in my ICloud are 154GB. Backed up on Amazon photos also as a 2nd measure. (edited)

Get the Silver lol. The Gold iPhone 8 is a really weird and quite nasty colour imo, very pinky gold and feminine, whereas the older 6 and 7 Gold colours were neutral and the polished gold of the XS and 11 looks really quite good. The Red ones always seem to disappear quickly, best colour imo.

Surely this will run at snail pace? I know whenever iphones have updates over 3 years they go mega slow so unless its running the ios of that time or year later i wouldnt bother, be better off with paying a little more and getting a current gen cheap phone
    plewis00's avatar
    plewis00
The A11 is still powerful and the lower screen resolution helps a lot. It’s quite nippy still. The SE 2nd gen is better but more money, same story with the 3rd gen 5G one.

Spend £100 on this or spend that £100 towards a better phone..

This is pretty much the cheapest usable entry to the iOS space and has loads of storage too. Only you can answer the budget/value question as it’s individual.

Not great, but the 8 Plus for a little more had decent battery life.

I've gambled with the plus version for £139. Never bought refurbs from giffgaff; hopefully it's in good condition. Thank OP.
    plewis00's avatar
    plewis00
If it makes you feel better, I've had lots of GiffGaff refurbs and each one, despite some being the lowest grade, were near new - yes, I'm sure some slip through and I'm sure an older phone may have more signs of use than a newer one but I suspect you'll be fine.
  23. 3722's avatar

Well, just got mine (8 Plus) and it seems like I got lucky as it is noticeable it's not new but apart from a small dent on one of the corners it looks quite pristine. I've never had an apple product before so just setting it up and updating to latest OS ver 16, as it was shipped with 14. Happy with it so far.

Opinions please, this is the iPhone 11 from Giffgaff, 83% battery health, 128gb for £279, but scratch on the screen. Likely to get much better?
50235820-1iMT6.jpgThe rest of the phone looks ok. (edited)

Got my space grey 256GB, phone in excellent condition but battery is only 78% (can return since they say min 80% in listing). Only 2% out but still...

No more stock. Keep it and run it at 78%, return and keep looking, replace battery with 3rd party jobbie (& lose waterproof status, most likely), or replace with Apple original (£££). Decisions....

Wouldn't one consider 2% as margin of error for variety of reasons? Also nice price plus massive storage for iPhone.
  26. plewis00's avatar
    plewis00
Got the Gold one (as it was the only one in stock) - is in absolutely pristine condition, if they had said 'grade A' I wouldn't have argued. Only concern, the battery is 80% health. I still think it's fine for the money. I have no idea how the battery is so worn but the chassis and glass is like new.
    innocent's avatar
    innocent
Natural degradation of battery over prolonged storage, personally I wouldn't worry too much. From your description, it seems it is brand new. For the amount of money that you have paid and that much on board storage on iPhone, I would keep it and enjoy it.
EDIT : You have struck GOLD 🥇 (edited)
