    Sorry for being a bit clueless but I bought a 1TB ssd with the view to installing it in my PC - would this allow me to attach it externally? Just plug and go?

    Yes this enclosure will allow PC to boot when connected externally to USB (plug and go). However the speed of NVME will be restricted by the speed of USB port it is connected to, so it is not recommended. When sticks on the motherboard it gives lot better speeds.

    Will this work with a Gen 4 NVME?

    It doesn't specify which Gen the interface is, I suspect Gen 3. Gen 4 is backwards compatible so should work fine. Max theroretical bandwidth in this is 10Gbps = 1.25GB/s.

    I got this and a cheap 1TB NVMe, it’s proving to be useful for working with my drone videos on my iPad Pro. Noticeably faster despite the limitations of the USB port. I found the thermal pad to be sufficient and it didn’t seem to get too warm when I transferred about 500gb of files from an old SATA HDD in one sitting. Then when my new HDD arrived I transferred those files onto it from the NVMe and it was fine again. Seems robust and highly portable.

    Okay I see it’s a form of HDD. I typically edit drone footage on my iPad Pro, which has a USB-C port. Can I plug this straight in or does it need to go through a hub? Will there be any improvement in speed of file transfer over the portable HDDs I typically use? (edited)

    Just a heads up in case some get caught out using these for their old M2 drives.

    Despite using the same connector, these enclosures do not work with the older SATA M2 drives.

    Heat is a big problem for these. There's no fans, no space for a heatsink, so drives run very hot

    Great stuff, upgrading the kids laptop drives to 2TB, this should take the Ballache out of cloning the drives instead of the imaging to rust drive back to nvme I was planning and not looking forward too.
