A wide aperture lens for high quality portraits and low light photos
With the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens you can easily produce more artistic and impactful photography thanks to a wide f/1.8 aperture that produces sharp focus on your subject and a beautiful blurred background.

A classic re-born
The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM replaces the popular EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens which was affectionately known for giving outstanding picture quality at an affordable price. This latest version gives the same stunning photo quality but with a fast, near-silent focus motor and a more robust build that belies its price.

The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lens is great for:

Portrait
Perfect for capturing expressions on the faces of friends and family, ideal for weddings, events and parties.

Low-light
Perfect when you find yourself in darker conditions capturing nightscapes, firework displays or interiors.

Everyday
Capture life as it happens in front of you from the streets of your town to capturing the emotions of events.

Artistic and impactful photography
The wide f/1.8 aperture of the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM gives you the ability to bring your subject into sharp focus and blur the background. Photographers refer to this as a ‘narrow depth of field’ and makes your subject stand out which is great for portraits, as people become the clear focus of your shot.

Let more light in
The wide f/1.8 aperture lets in more than 8x the amount of light compared to the standard zoom lens that is provided with your EOS*. This results in sharper images with less motion blur and reduced need to use flash in dimly lit conditions so you can easily capture the atmosphere of a low light environment.

For portraits and everyday use
The 50mm focal length allows you to fill the frame with your subject from a comfortable distance making it a great lens for portraits. A similar perspective to the human eye and its compact size make the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM a great everyday lens to always carry with your EOS camera.

Sharp focus for photos and videos
The near-silent STM (Stepping Motor) technology focuses extremely quickly when shooting photos, so you can react suddenly to capture fleeting moments. Creating high quality movies is easier with STM as it delivers steady and quiet continuous focusing, so your movies are smooth, and soundtracks only capture the surrounding sounds and not the noise of a focusing motor.

Features & details
Blur the background behind your subject to help them stand out -it's a great look for people pictures.
Near-silent STM focusing works quickly when shooting photos and more smoothly when capturing video.
The EF 50mm f/1.8 STM lets in lots of light, so you can keep shooting when things get dark -capturing the atmosphere of the occasion.
As a fixed, non-zooming lens the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM delivers great image quality -enhanced sharpness, more contrast, and less distortion.
Weighing in at just 160g, the EF 50mm f/1.8 STM is a lens you can always have with you.Angle of view (horzntl, vertl, diagnl) 40º, 27º,46º

Got this lens at Xmas for a similar price. Incredible value for the price. One warning though is that on an APS-C sensor it will act more like an 80mm lens

Use this on my M50 with the EF-EOS M adapter or viltrox speed booster. Go to travel lens, heat added

I have an M3, currently using the 18-55mm kit lens, would you recommend this lens as an upgrade? And how's your experience of using the adapters?

Hmmm. I have the 17-55mm f2.8 on my 90d, so have the focal length covered. Aside from size, can anybody convince me of reasons to buy this?

I have this lens for my 7d mk2 which uses a crop sensor. Can definitely recommend for the price. You can get some beautiful shots and the image quality is surprisingly good. The f1.8 aperture does an amazing job at some nice bokeh

As mentioned, the autofocus can be little slow and noisy but at this price it’s absolutely worth it. Even more so if you haven’t yet got a prime lens. They do add a new experience to photography. And the huge boost in ISO and shutter speeds is a massive bonus, as has said

Please forgive my noob questions. It’s been a while since I even used my camera. 😬 This will work on Canon 400D right? And give much better results than the stock 18-55.

Yes, the 400D will take EF and EF-S lenses, I used the previous version of this lens on my 400D. It is much better than the stock lens for outdoor portraits, 50mm is a little long for indoor use on that camera unless it's just for headshots. The 40mm f2.8 is a good alternative but more expensive.

This would pair very well with a used Canon 6D

6D is a superb camera even in today's times. I have taken some cracking portraits using 6d and this 50mm lens

Love this lens. Got a 15 month old and have taken some great pictures of him. Handy having the wide aperture for a moving subject and the creamy bokeh makes for lovely portraits. Excellent value.

This is my go to lens. The low f. is great for portraits. I have even filmed with it and got some great results. At this price you will not be disappointed. Your kit lens wont compare.

I used to have this on my Canon 200D - it's like 80mm on that camera. It was good for portrait use but I sold it shortly after and bought the 24mm 2.8 pancake instead which worked out as 38mm on that camera and made it a better general purpose lens.

I'd like this, and a few other EF lens for my Lumix S5II, but the Sigma adaptor feels expensive to me.
