Part of a service pack on my 7 series
"BMW changed their approval test procedures earlier last year from the 6 cylinder to the later 4 cylinder turbo engine. This meant that the old formulation products would not pass the new tests and as such we removed the approval from the packs.
Going forward, the EDGE 5W-30 M and the Magnatec 5W-30 C3 meet the latest LL04 approvals – as does Magnatec 5W-40 C3 but no EDGE products now. We have some under test so there may be a new EDGE Turbo Diesel 5W-40 on the way. The LL01 approvals also changed so these were also taken off specific products and we don’t currently have any LL01 approved products
However, if your car is out of warranty - you could still happily use the EDGE 0W-30 if you have a preference ( or some stock ) as the oil has not changed and to all intents and purposes would still pass the old LL01/LL04 tests. You can also use the later LL04 approved oils mentioned above"
