Any good? How does it compare to the Firestick?

Been using Chromecasts since the first gen, now have the 4k and it's great, works really well. I find the firestick clunky in comparison

    I can recommend:

FLauncher - avoids all of the garbage TV being thrown at you on the home screen
SmartTubeNext - Ad free YouTube, better experience and options than the native app too
Button Mapper - reprogram your remote to open specific apps etc.
    And Plex of course

You can turn off recommendations so it just shows apps. No need for another launcher.

Full of features I don't use. For example, it makes you to sign into Netflix before allowing streaming from an already signed in Netflix from another device. Really annoying if you use more than one account or you're sharing an account when you shouldn't be.

Then it likes to switch AV channels to itself on my surround amp without me asking it to - annoying!

I don't want all the smart stuff, I just want it to stream like the old, puk-shaped Chromecasts did.

You should be able to turn off HDMI-CEC in your av amp settings, that will stop the auto switching at least

At 4-7 times the cost depending on the HD/4Kmodel, few would I'd imagine? (edited)

I've got the OG Chromecast plugged into a tele in the spare room, it's an old 1080p panel, would there be any advantages to upgrading to this?

This is like a fire stick an old Chromecast mixed together. You have a remote and apps and stuff or you can cast to it.

Disney + def works as I have had it running on there for over a year. Didn't have to sideload or anything. Just download it as per normal

Would've previously highly recommended but the past 2 months have been so annoying! A bug came up in one of the updates which stops sound playing. The only way to get sound back is to either restart from settings menu or unplug and plug back in! We've had to start using the Alexa software on our TV instead, until Google sort this bug out! Tempting... I have an LG TV and it does everything I need...... except for bloomin' Chromecast! (As in screen mirroring from phone). For some reason they decided to put AirPlay on it but not Chromecast.

It's a lot of duplication though, and a precious HDMI socket...

Can you get Vanced MicroG and Youtube Revanced onto these?
    Cobray's avatar
    Cobray
You would use smartubenext instead of vanced. Check top post.

Any benefit over a 4k firestick
    Kako_Ponga's avatar
    Kako_Ponga
The hardware is better for Chromecast(will work more years), you can make streaming from any device to your Chromecast, firestick not support Cast. Also Chromecast have type-c connector that can be use to add usbs, and more functions as keyboard and mice.

If you want more support for Amazon apps go for firestick, you want support for every app Chromecast.

Will it work by connecting the power to the usb port on the side of the tv? Or does it need to be connected via the mains brick?

My old firestick used to say insufficient power
    jujuzeez's avatar
    jujuzeez
it's a juice (power) guzzler. it wont work, if u want to use additional peripherals like ethernet and UBS storage u have to use a brick rated 20w+.
