Yes Gen 3 is still overkill for 10Gbps

TB4 will get to around 2700* read and some higher according to some users*

This is an Intel 670p 2TB in an Orico 10Gbps caddy
    • Read Speed: 3500 MBps
    • Write Speed: 2700 MBps
    • Type: M.2 PCIe 3.0 x4 (NVMe)

I was getting 2700+ read/write with a gen 4 drive in a TB4 caddy. I will go with this instead.

For a few pounds more you can get the Gen4 at £155. PS5 compatible too.

Am I right in thinking a gen 3 is more than enough for an external drive? Any reason I should spend more for the gen 4? I have an Orico 10gb/s but I don't understand if I can get the benefit of a gen 4 on it...

Correct me if I'm wrong but as an external drive, I don't think current transfer speeds over usb or thunderbolt will make use of the best speeds Gen4 has to offer. This would be plenty and for a good price too
