Vastly wider range of frequencies.
128 channels against 16 & you can program which.
Swappable antennas, so stubs on a camp site, & long whip for distances, mag-mounts for cars, & shove one on your roof or up a tree.
The dearest I paid was for an 8W version (16 times PMR power) for about £25-30.
& I got two 16 channel Boafeng UHF handsets (which can be programmed to the 16 PMR frequencies with CHIRP) for £20, which was a bit steep, but they came with the programming cable & an extra two batteries, & USB chargers.
I got some from Tandy one chirstmas when I was little, it had the little metal aerial you pulled out

Missed this damn ... we use walkies when going on a road trip with others.
Its was all about Walkie Talkies and Scalextric. Either were enough to make a child burst.
