As a 1970s kid walky-talkys were the coolest thing ever, and ones with built in cameras were pure science fiction only seen in Star Trek. Now I have several such devices and only communicate by text if I can.

You could get six UV-5R radios for that price if you're lucky.

    Cover UVF & VHF.
    Vastly wider range of frequencies.
128 channels against 16 & you can program which.
Swappable antennas, so stubs on a camp site, & long whip for distances, mag-mounts for cars, & shove one on your roof or up a tree.

I've not bought any in a while, but the last UV-5Rs were reduced to £7-8 on Amazon.

The dearest I paid was for an 8W version (16 times PMR power) for about £25-30.

& I got two 16 channel Boafeng UHF handsets (which can be programmed to the 16 PMR frequencies with CHIRP) for £20, which was a bit steep, but they came with the programming cable & an extra two batteries, & USB chargers.

Its was all about Walkie Talkies and Scalextric. Either were enough to make a child burst.

Do you remember Rumbelows and Radio Shack (UK) too?
