    My panniers get caked in mud and crud in the wet winter on the ride into work, wouldn't want to then use them as a backpack

    Agreed. That's the main reason I wouldn't want to attach a backpack to my bike directly. Better and cheaper with a regular backpack (placed inside a dedicated pannier bag if necessary). (edited)

    Have this one, it's a great idea, can just partially unzip the shoulder strap section to get one strap out and swing bag on shoulder. The bag is a decent size. However where it fails is in lack of stiffness at the back/corners. If you're not careful with loading the bag, it will rub against your spokes.
