Wish Leuchars airshow was on still. Unfortunately Fife to Eastbourne a bit far

Try Rhyl (North Wales coast), it's also free and about half the distance for you

Looks fun, but how does it work? I see there are paid tickets, do you just grab a 'free' spot on the beach just outside paid area? do you get a good view? how crowed does it get? are you able to find parking?

No paid for areas any more.
There are things you can pay for to look at, inside a Chinook, I think.
Park and ride at the sovereign center, although it's a nice 30 minute seafront walk, if you don't have little children. Or park out of town and get the bus/ walk to the seafront.

Essentially yes, grab a spot along the sea front, between the Pier and Wish Tower is best, and enjoy the show. Plenty of ground displays, stalls, other entertainment by the Wish Tower and on the Western Lawns opposite the Grand Hotel.

Is it good for families with small kids?

It's a great day out. Its along the beach and has various things to do there also.
In my experience with my little ones they loved it but found it loud sometimes as they pass along the sea in front of you.
Would recommend for sure especially if the weather is good.

Bournemouth's dates are 31st August to 3rd September,if that helps with peoples traveling range.

To be fair you can't really charge for an airshow

Some of the big RAF shows they charge, yes you can stand in a field outside of the base, but you will only see the flybys, not the displays at low level along the runway etc. (or static ones around the base).

Displays like the Red arrows tend to concentrate the display (close distances passes) at the centre of the runway, so would be hard to see from outside the base.

    No need to book.
Turn up on a sunny day, wonder along the seafront for a good spot, enjoy the show. Red Arrows are normally mid afternoon ish. (edited)

The Eastbourne Airshow returns on Thursday with thousands of spectators expected to line the seafront for entertainment and displays.

The show, which runs from Thursday 17 - Sunday 20 August, returned last year for the first time since the Covid pandemic.

And this year it will celebrate 29 years of flying.

Visitors desperate to see The Red Arrows will be thrilled as the famous jets are scheduled to fly over the four day show.

Here's when and where you'll be able to see the Reds.

    Thursday

The Red Arrows were due to perform on Thursday but were forced to cancel their flying display due to technical issues.

    Friday

On Friday the Red Arrows will perform in Odiham for an event in the morning, before flying back to East Sussex.

The stunt team will arrive in Eastbourne at the same time, 4:27pm and follow the same route as on Thursday.

Thousands of people are expected along Eastbourne seafront to watch the flying displays.

Thousands of people are expected to attend the free event.

This year's will include displays from aircraft new and old, including a Typhoon and a Lancaster Spitfire and Hurricane for the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.

The airshow will also feature a Chinook helicopter and a Norwegian Vampire.

There will be other ground based attractions from the Western Lawns along to the Bandstand.

People travelling to the event are being encouraged to use public transport to help the show reduce its carbon footprint.
