HiFiMan Sundara Planar Dynamic Driver Over Ear Headphones The HiFiMan Sundara headphones are a pair of over ear headphones with planar dynamic drivers. What is a Planar Dynamic Driver? Sometimes referred to as orthodynamic headphones planar magnetic headphones differ to the more traditional dynamic headphone. Dynamic headphones generate sound by using a coil of wire (often called a voice coil) attached to a diaphragm and a suspension is created to allow the coil and diaphragm to move back and forth like a piston moving enough air to produce sound. However depending on the quality of the dynamic headphone speaker cone there will be inconsistencies across the frequency spectrum meaning that though many dynamic headphones have a very nice sound signature they are not necessarily 100% accurate when they reproduce an audio signal. Dynamic headphones also deteriorate quicker over time. In contrast planar magnetic headphones use an incredibly thin lightweight and resilient film diaphragm (around 1/10th the thickness of a human hair) stretched over a sturdy frame and placed between magnetic arrays. In these headphones the coil is unwound and spread across this film diaphragm. As the current flows the magnetic field is created within the headphone that causes the diaphragm to move. The film diaphragm in planar magnetic headphones is often lighter than the air it is moving meaning that they can be driven with an incredible accuracy. The sound they produce feature faster transients more responsive bass more detailed highs and a wider dynamic range than other headphones. As the voice coil is spread over a larger area than in traditional headphones planar magnetic headphones are also much better at dissipating heat and can handle a huge amount of power without distorting. Overall this type of headphone features higher sensitivity can play louder with tighter control and reduced colouration and more controlled directivity. However, their design means they will suffer from more le.

Care and Maintenance:

① Please allow for a period of “burn in” where you allow playback of audio for a period of 150 hours to allow the headphones to reach their fullest audio potential.

② Be aware the SUNDARA is relatively sensitive so please make sure to turn the volume dial low before connecting to an audio source.

③ Please listen to the SUNDARA at moderate listening levels so that you can continue to enjoy their audio quality for years to come.

④ The drivers do not require user maintenance, do not touch them.

⑤ The SUNDARA needs a decent amp to drive it to its full potential. If the headphone cannot reach a proper level of volume, please check if your audio source is powerful enough to drive the headphones.

Planar headphones benefit from break-in to achieve optimum performance. Usually this takes up to 150 hours however there is nothing special you need to do other than enjoy your headphones. Wipe the surfaces (ear pads, cups) with a microfiber cloth and store the headphone in a dry, cool and safe place (away from dust, heat, humidity, sunlight, younger kids and pets if possible). For the headband, wipe it periodically to remove any dust. Do not expose the headphone to excessive heat or cold. Do not use any headphone while driving or operating machinery. Do not use volatile substances alcohol, acetone, gasoline or dish detergent to clean the headphone.

Brilliant headphones. Have been using these(model 2020) for the last 2.5 years.

While these can be driven without an amp, you should get an AMP to utilise these to full potential. I’d suggest the ifi Zen Can for driving these.

One upgrade I’d suggest is replacing the OEM cable to a balanced cable. OEM cable while useable isn’t great.

I got a very nice cable from AliExpress.

Poor planar magnetic headphones bought them 3 years ago from Amazon and returned them as they are so bad with the limited spectrum of sound that I could not listen any tunes on them… The above headphones were tested with Fio hi-res amp player and with audiophile cables Forza Claire Hybrid HPC...
Do not waste your money and time for this particular model...

Did you try and EQ them? I'm happy with mine without but definitely prefer them with a little extra bass and taking off a touch around 8k (I normally drop 8k a little on most headphones as I find it a bit fatiguing for some reason).

Had to grab one of these, just to dip my toe into planar magnetics - if I don't like the signature, they'll just go back - good old amazon

Would these run off a little portable ifi hip dac?

I run mine off an iBasso dc03 Pro with less than half the power output of the hip dac, should be fine!

I am planning on getting the Qudelix 5K to power this, people have been recommending that I change the cable to 2.5mm balanced -> Dual 3.5mm ? Anyone know the best place to get this from ?

Anyone who bought these received them yet?
Mine arrived last night from mainland Europe.
Headphones look new but clearly a customer return.
Got home late but had to have a listen regardless.
Couldnt hear any obvious faults plaguing this model. But came away not all that impressed.

Worth trying a little EQ if you're not keen on sound signature out of the box. I use Peace on PC or wavelet for Android with AutoEQ for 2020 Sundara. Makes a difference.

I got the Sundara's today, paired it with Qudelix 5K (£99 from scan on open box) and a balanced 2.5 cable from Amazon (£22), it is sublime and an absolute dream to listen to, I have many headphones from Sennheiser, B&W, B&O, Sony's etc, this is right there at the top, a bargain at £155, thanks OP (edited)

Thanks OP. I'll give these a go. Wanted to try some budget planars to see what they're worth. I have only demoed some fancy planars in the past and was blown away with the punch, precision and delivery they offered. Curious to see what I will get for a fraction of the price. Will they be much of an improvement over my well worn Fidelio X1?

Planars are really different, do you have some sort of powerful DAC/AMP setup? If you can't feed planars they sound mostly plain and dull. (edited)

£239 new from Amazon if you'd rather. Warehouse always a bit of a gamble but I've bought two pairs of Like New in the past and couldn't discern any ear sweat (edited)
