Worth saying that if you don't care about overclocking, you can save some money and go for the Intel Core i5-13400F. Performance is within 5% or so and it can be bought for £30 less.

And if you don't care which brand (which you shouldn't), you can go with an R5 5600 for about 7% less performance but for £100 less.

    R5 5600 £126.97 @AmazonUK amazon.co.uk/AMD-Ryzen-5600-Processor-12-thread/dp/B09VCHR1VH/

However, if you're doing more productivity workloads that favour Intel chips or can leverage all the extra cores then it might be something to consider. That said, the R7 5700X (£168) is still cheaper for nearly the same performance. (edited)

I've been using this as my daily driver for the past few months, fantastic processor but the price is wrong.

If you have been using an AMD AM4 platform for the past few years, you probably didn't notice INTEL making huge efforts to get back in the game. The Intel 12600KF is more processor than I need right now but it's the best budget option to unlock all the overclocking features an enthusiast needs. It's not just CPU overclocking that you get but also DDR memory overclocking. You can't successfully overclock Samsung B-Die DDR4 without A "K" class processor, and this is the cheapest you can get . . .

    Stock CPU.

The "F" in the product name denotes it has no built-in graphics so you need a dedicated graphics card. everyone knows this Im sure. If you are a straightforward user who just wants to plug in their chip, switch on XMP and that's it, then this is not the CPU for you. If you just want to dip your toes into LGA1700 without breaking the bank then please look at these alternative 12th Gen processors from Intel, preferably second hand as there are no pins to bend and you get a big bang for buck. . .

Core i3-12400/f to pair with RTX 3070/RX 6700 XT

If you are happy spending more than £200 on a new CPU then look for deals on the I5-13400/f, i5-13500/f and of course the 13600K/f for the overclocking nuts!

The Intel 13th Gen 13400/f is almost identical to the 12th Gen 12600K/f on offer here. They both have 6 powerful performance P-cores and they both have 4 small efficiency e-cores. 12600K can overclock though!

Same 16GB DDR4 memory that ran at DDR4-3600 on AM4, now runs at DDR4-4200 on LGA1700.

If you are running Windows 10 like me then you can still run into small issues running these processors with e-cores. I had it in a few games where I would get some lags. This was because Windows 10 doesn't really know the difference between the different cores types. Setting the Windows power profile to active sorted it for me, but then I started using a program called "process lasso" that I can program to switch power profiles automatically, depending on my task.

If you are running Windows 11 then the thread director software takes care of the new efficiency e-cores so no worries there.

I got the DDR4 memory running so fast that I broke a 3D-Mark record for the fastest 12600K/f & RX 5700 XT combo. I only overclocked the DDR4 and GPU core but left the CPU running at stock.

LGA1700 is a very modern platform and has never been so affordable as it has right now. Fill your boots! (edited)

Something I found interesting and was not aware of until I just researched it, is that this is a 10 core 16 thread processor, with 6 performance and 4 efficiency cores, while the cheaper counterpart, the 12400(F), 12 thread with only 6 cores. The 13400(F) is a 16 thread processor with 6 performance and 4 efficiency cores, same core count as the 12600K. Therefore, one should do some research which one performed better, 12600K vs 13400F. The 13400F seems cheaper. The 12600K can overclock, in theory, but looking at temperatures of the higher (i7, i9) unlocked models, I would personally not take up overclocking easily. Perhaps someone with more experience in the matter can let us know.

Indeed, you are correct. If you want to overclock 12600K then you may also need a good board to unlock it. Plus cooling solution as it can get hot. If budget is limited then better to go with 13400 so slightly more future proof.
