sorted by-Travel from JFK to Brooklyn/Manhattan via the Airtrain and Subway -- much cheaper than the $100 taxi fare to downtown
-Stay in Brooklyn for better hotel deals and get the subway to Manhattan to see the sights
-Consider serviced apartments instead of hotels (there are loads of these in NYC) where you can make some meals with groceries instead of eating out all the time
-Food markets are a great place for an amazingly tasty meal at a fraction of the cost of a fancy restuarant
- JetBlue is a very good airline, seat pitch is the best of all US/UK carriers at 32 inches in Economy. Seat is reasonably comfy, and the Airbus 321neo is a new and modern inside. As an approx 180 seat plane, boarding and disembarking is quick. Free decent Wi-Fi was a massive plus!
- Onboard food is tasty and included (not massive portions but enough!), you order it via the touchscreen and have lots of options. Drinks and snacks are free. Snacks are help yourself, extra drinks just ask the attendant.
- For about 90 pounds more you can get the Blue Extra seats, which are the same Economy seats but with way more leg room, priority boarding and priority security lane (this last point is mega useful as I just found out last week in JFK)
- Lastminute.com are sharks and have a bad reputation of not refunding people from the covid period
- US Hotels are expensive. Maybe stay in Brooklyn but near a subway station, or if Manhattan stay away from Times Square / Midtown
- Eating out is expensive, even McDonalds! NY Pizza slices are reasonable value
- An airport taxi or Uber is min. 100 dollars so see if you manage taking the Airtrain and Subway or LIRR into Manhattan
- The Subway has finally embraced contactless, so use the same bank card for all your journeys and it will cap what you pay
- Check out the Mall at Jersey Gardens for factory outlet shopping. Way cheaper than Manhattan, 20-25 mins on the bus
I also think 3 nights in NYC is more than enough because you're walking about 20,000-30,000+ steps a day if you're not using cabs or the subway and that level of walking will catch up on you fast. Oh as I've mentioned before go Merrimack outlet if you go near Boston, the clothes are so so cheap it's unreal! The staff told me people fly in with empty suitcases just to buy clothes lol. Last time I was there 2 pairs of Levi's were £49!
As others have said, hotels are expensive, partcularly in Manhattan, and food (fast food, restaurants) are really expensive compared to before. There are still bargains to be had on clothes and shoes if you look in the right places.

I'm booking my cheap flights now, so to witness first-hand a potentially momentous occasion of Donald being ushered away to the slammer.
