9/10 review by AVForums when it was £160 (2018)... avforums.com/rev…72/
"It’s also an unreasonably well made one for the asking price. I don’t think it is possible to make a product of this relatively large size feel truly biblically bolted together for £160 but the Monitor 50 is pretty much competitive with anything on the market under £300. "

I know it was posted a little cheaper in May, but it's still a super-deal at this price!

The compact Monitor 50s are designed to be placed in a bookshelf type environment / wall-mounted and they deliver a surprisingly powerful performance for such small speakers.

The Monitor 50's modern square cabinets complement the 51/2" MMP II drivers and 25 mm black C-CAM tweeters. By placing the tweeters in the top corner of the speakers, Monitor Audio has been able to reduce the size of the cabinet and give a unique appearance.

The compact dimensions, driver technology and rear port allow the speakers to perform in the most confined locations. As the cabinet is rear ported, the output is well damped and is suitable for placement close to a wall. A single set of high quality gold plated binding posts provide the connections for a suitable amplifier. The Monitor 50s certainly sound bigger than they look.

Key Features
  • Classic Monitor Audio speaker design with a playful twist
  • MMP II (Metal Matrix Polymer) driver cones
  • High overall impedance (8 ohms) – easy to drive with lower power amplifiers
  • Black C-CAM (Ceramic-Coated Aluminium Magnesium) dome tweeter – derived from Monitor Audio’s award-winning Bronze series
  • Creative use of 51/2" and 61/2" drivers have delivered a compact bookshelf, floorstand model together with larger bookshelf and floorstander to complement larger rooms and higher power applications
  • HiVe II (High Velocity, Low Noise Reflex Port) technology – for an improved transient response and tighter bass, due to smoother airflow
  • Black, white or a walnut finish, with contrasting grey baffle
  • Can be wall-mounted using Monitor Audio FIX-M Speaker Mount, utilising its rear fixing point

FAQs & other useful info (sometimes gets missed in the pain deal post)...

    - This is for a pair of speakers
    - They are a passive speakers, so will need an external amplifier to power it

    - Some Amp suggestions: Fosi Audio BT20A

    - I believe a suitable wired subwoofer can be connected to it - the type (passive/active) & spec to go for might depend on the amp you own or intend buying

    - Yes, the orange cones version look better, at least that's what most expressed in the previous deals! (unavailable everywhere atm)
    - more to follow as needed

I have these, paid a little more for them quite recently. For the money there is nothing for sale from a major speaker manufacturer that can touch then for their sonic abilities at this price. Connected to my ageing Teac amp via a Bluetooth receiver. They produce a wide, crystal clear soundstage, 3" from a wooden wall bass is far better than expected . If you want cheap real hifi quality sound just add a decent class D amp and for £120 you'll have a system which just 10yrs ago would have needed £800 to replicate.

I'm listening to John Williams In Vienna on them now, sounding absolutely superb. (edited)

Are these better than a pair of Sonos?

They're a completely different price point and use case to a pair of Sonos speakers. They require a separate amp to run them, but given the choice again I'd buy these speakers over getting Sonos ones.

If you look up to comment above, my review from a previous time they were on offer is there. They're great speakers, and at this price they're exceptional. I paid £109 for the speakers and £90 for an amp (S.M.S.L. A100) and it's a great pairing for use in my lounge - can't fault them.

I also own a pair of these. Bought them last year late summer, for closer to the £100 mark from recollection. I use them as bedroom speakers, connected to my BluOS streaming amp.
As mentioned by another poster, they are very very good, practical space wise and can go on not-so-deep a book shelf or otherwise where you may have limited space options.

As far as audio quality goes, nothing can touch them at let alone £100.....so for this deal, wow, they're an absolute steal! To be fair I rate them hightly enough if they were priced up to £150.

The overall sound quality, and separation between speakers is top notch! Whilst some online reviews may mention they don't look great, well that's a fair comment for those who go for asthetics, however for me they look alright (plus you can remove the covers if you wish), and more importantly they are not huge or imposing, but do create a big enough sound and soundstage to keep you engaged and entertained with most music genres.

    100% recommended! Great sound quality!!

I have a pair of these that I bought for our small wedding (30 people). They worked great, since then they've been sat in our lounge and have been very good for general music listening.
I wouldn't call myself an audiophile by any stretch but cant fault them as a pair of speakers - especially at this price (I paid £109 and would do again).
I paired them with an S.M.S.L. A100 amp and honestly could not be happier with them.

This is a cracking deal. I have got these on my desk rigged up to a Denon RCD-M37 amp. I've also got them as rears in a 7.2 set-up.
They are good sounding speakers for both purposes and you can get them pretty loud. There is plenty of bass without distortion.
The ones I got have an orange cone though like in the pic attached. These look like the black cone version. Not sure what, if any, difference between the two.
For this price they are a steal.

I’ve got to admit I’m a little confused. Rear ported speakers used to be the worst thing to put in enclosed spaces and next to a wall. Leading to muffled bass. Unless these have some active DSP what makes them so suited to that situation?

They come with foam bungs for when placing near a wall.

Got these last time they were on offer for a small room turntable/cheap amp.set up.

Really good sound. And for the price total bargain. If you're hovering over the buy button, do it. They're great.

I bought these when this was first offered a while back. They have to be the best speakers on the planet at this particular price point.

Brilliant, I was looking for a small pair of bookshelf to stick in my dining room using the Speaker B outputs of my cambridge amp. These will do nicely thanks!

Just received mine looks great! But didn't know wires were not included. What wires are the best for these speakers?

Sorry about this, forgot that they were not included. What amp / device / sound source are you connecting them to? And what length of wires do you need?

I have the Silver 100 (6g) would these make good rear speakers?

Any suggestions for an amp with phono input that would work well for these?
