At £20, you might get a well priced Casio; quartz, constructed mainly out of plastic etc. Granted this will be adequate for some as ‘it tells the time’ as so many seem to view as a revelation.
At £200, you may get an automatic movement and sapphire crystal, if you look around. The watch won’t be a certified chronometer (having received a COSC certificate) and the movement will likely have been bought and used in multiple models (although there are exceptions).
A more fitting question might be ‘what advantage does this watch have over something priced at around £1000-£1500?’ at which point there are alternatives available, some with an in-house movement and which will have many of the same features as this watch.
To some, brand appreciation will add value, as well as ownership of a specific model (in this case the Orbis ‘teddy bear’ model, which I cannot see mentioned). Arguably, this contributes to a fair proportion of the price, as manufacturers will tactically price products to create ‘prestige’ (although, again arguably, some of this will be justified in heritage value of the brand). This occurs in almost all consumer products, but seems to attract greater disdain amongst critics of higher end watch brands.
In short, if you just want to tell the time, you can use your phone or ask a member of the public. If you just want a nice looking watch, there are plenty ranging from around £50 up to around £500, depending upon what’s important to you. If you are genuinely interested in watches, there are a huge amount, within a wide price range that may appeal; however, if you are looking specifically for this watch, or one very similar to it, this provides a significant discount from the going price. Ah, the classic "I bought one of these on holiday abroad from the 'looky, looky man' for a few pounds". Soon to be followed by "My £10 Casio keeps better time". Never fails to amuse
So, not sure why this is getting voted hot.
Unfortunately the one that you were offered was a cheap knock off, likely produced using child labour in a country with questionable human rights laws, using such cheap materials that it could be offered at £20, along with a cap and a pair of ‘RayBans’, which would also have been fake and liable to damage your eyes in use.
The sellers of such products tend to target those who they believe are easily impressionable and can be parted with their money with little effort.
You were wise not to buy it. (edited)
I’m sure some are wearing it, whilst some may be buying it as an investment and not to be worn. Whilst I would question the investment potential, an optimist might argue that there is more potential on this particular model. It is worth noting that relatively few watches appreciate in value.
Some people buying it to wear will not be wearing it in places where they’d fear for keeping hold of it, plus it’s not exactly one of the ‘big flashy’ models, fabled to be oft waved under people’s noses.
Personally I find spending £1000 on a phone to be outrageous. As well as the risk of damaging it by dropping it (a watch is secured to your wrist), the technology will soon become outdated and the phone will lose much of its original value.
As always, it’s each to their own, however I cannot recall seeing the same quantity of ignorant and/or negative comments appearing on higher end phone deal posts that seem to occur on the watch posts.
It broke after two days, luckily because of the global warranty, Ernest Jones swapped it when I got back to the UK.
Is a smart 'watch ' not a watch then ? I think you are over thinking this site .If the going rate is 4 k for this and you can now buy it for 3 then that's a great deal if you are looking to buy one .Same as if your smart non physical one was originally priced at 200 and a retailer reduced it to 100 that would be a great deal .
Fascinating.
There’s appreciation / depreciation tools on certain apps for watch models that are very handy.
Why is it always 'this' £3,000 watch that constantly gets posted, and not other luxury watches?
Why is £3000 a worthy price point for it, over a £20, £200 one?
Genuinely curious.
What a lovely imagination.
Thanks very informative!
Forgive my ignorance - are people wearing this watch? Or are they keeping it in a collection/display to potentially appreciate in value?
I only ask, because of the incredible amount of anxiety I would have wearing something on my wrist that costs more than my car.
Bad enough with a £1000 phone in the pocket.
Yeah but, a £3000 watch that gets this many upvotes, almost every time. It's a luxury item that only a small percentage can afford.
My smart watch can be bought between £150/300 so appeals to a wider audience. Read between the lines, it's a digital watch, not physical, no need to be pedantic.
Like Rolex 》omega 》 rado..
Try BLUE15
I have a TAG and a Rolex. I've hady Rolex for about 18 years approx and TAG for about 30 years. I haven't worn the Rolex for 15 years because people looks at me as though I'm a w***k*r. The TAG hasn't been worn for 20 odd years. Both are being kept for my youngest daughter.
Being the “reduced” version at 38mm it won’t rise in value, lovely watch never the less.
You’d get it insured for £60 a year, no different to driving a car you could say.
