I just waited 18 hours for RAC to tow my car after a breakdown

the first van to arrive was pretty quick - 30 minutes and diagnosed the problem within 30. He left on his merry way as he couldn't tow (because RAC contract out most of their towing).

The contractor arrived 4 hours later... and then his van broke down because the RAC contract out to anyone. He spent the next 3 hours fixing the ramp on his van, trying to rewire the lighting harness for the legally-required tow board they put on the back of your car, before giving up at 1:30AM as his shift was ending at 2AM. Stranded, we called a family member to rescue us from the middle of nowhere. RAC rescheduled the recover to "between 630AM - 830AM".

RAC's usual platitudes gave us 0 real-world help. They said they would at least book the taxi to get us back out to the car for when the recovery van arrives. The NEXT DAY we got a call from the recovery van that he would be at the car in 30 minutes. RAC hadn't booked the taxi. Several calls later, RAC said they'd booked us a taxi... an uber... 5 ubers cancelled on us before we called RAC back. They said they'd book with a different company... this time they booked the taxi to COLLECT at the location of the car and DROP OFF where we are (the exact opposite of what they were supposed to do).

We had to book and pay for our taxi to get back out to the car

AVOID RAC LIKE THE PLAGUE. One of the worst companies in the UK. We're waiting for our taxi fare to be reimbursed, and have been offered no apologies or compensation

Don’t waste your money on the RAC, they are the worst breakdown company I have ever experienced. We had a similar experience when we broke down and ended having to pay someone else to recover us. After contacting the RAC customer service about their poor service and that we had to pay for our own recovery charges, it took them less than a couple of hours to tell us that they won’t uphold the complaint or pay for our extra costs.
Never again will I use the RAC, please check their reviews on the various review platforms before parting with your cash.
