    The series plummeted in quality storytelling when Rob Grant left and the reintroduction of Kochanski was a lunatic idea - apparently Rob Grant was dead against it and with him gone....not saying that later series didn't have their moments but series 7 and 8 were awful particularly "Duct Soup" voted worst episode on one survey unsurprisingly.
    The books were great. Rob Grant has done other stuff, and he's got the storytelling but not the humour, Dougb Naylor had the humour not the storytelling - though his "Last Human" was OK (BUT BUT BUT Doug - How the **** could Lister be the "Last Human" if Kochanskis there ???? His obsession with a poor character spoilt not just season 7 and 8 but the book too)
    They were better together than seperate. Grant's books had promise but something missing (edited)

    The introduction of Kochanski destroyed the relationships between the other characters and it was those relationships that made the show a success.

    But having watched this from the beginning, I'm surprised at how awful the first series was - silly and very basic gags that just don't work anymore. There are some flashes of the genius to come but the tendency to be an awful show was present from the start. The writers managed to salvage it but then it was lost again.

    You'd be amazed just how many current American genre writers, working for movies and TV, badly rip-off episodes of this show til this day- GOTG 3, written (very very badly) by the director, is a good example.

    Even though I can't say I was a big fan I much preferred the early ones, so this is perfect.

    I've been watching this from series 1 and am disappointed by how badly it's aged. The video quality isn't very good but, worse, the gags seem tired and weak by today's standards.

    The characters do develop over the first few series as do the relationships between them but the first series at least is very hard going. (edited)

    So you've said. I dare say you'll think movie effects and plotlines from Star Trek have aged too (amazement - "Show me more of this thing you call "love" Captain Kirk")
