Fun fact as this deal is not getting as much heat as it should!
RWG comes from the name of the developer Red White and Green developer way back. (edited)

Its also a tribute to the Welsh flag.

Cant it be unlocked and used elsewhere?

If someone states the model number then I am sure most of these things can be with a firmware install. Then you can dangle your dongle on your dingle and let it jangle anywhere.

I bought a backup dongle last year as my BB was failing, Huawei-7217 useful to have so if this one can be unlocked then worth a £10.

It finally arrived! and it's not a Customised Huawei E3372. as previously mentioned above (annoying as that's what I wanted!).....it's some very typically Chinese no name cheapo stick, model MSM8916 Qualcom / Android USB stick/wifi hotspot thing. Looks very similar to this

    or this forum.openwrt.org/t/u…712
When running in a USB powerbank it connects ok to RWG at 4G speeds, when connected to a laptop via USB it stays in 3G HSPA mode for some odd reason. Super slow user interface that doesn't respond to much saving changes, not sure if it is SIM locked, it has 5 APN selections, 1 is RWG and the others are for non UK APN networks and when I tried to save my Voda APN details it refused to save them but I've only spent 10 mins playing, so more testing..... It's so cheap and basic I'd be amazed if it is sim locked though.
As I do more testing, I'll report back. (edited)

From your description, it sounds cheap but not necessarily nasty but then it is probably there to attract new customers to RWG but then it is £10 only and 4G. I am more interested in the accompanying sim card. Was it 3in1, if it was international and how long would the credit last? I know that RWG said its a monthly renewable thing but was there any paperwork mentioning all this?. Thanks.

I have to eat my words a bit. RWG support did reply soon after my email to them but it went in my spam. don't I feel a twit!... their other emails did not go to spam. They advised of a supply delay and it was on the way (which it was) - they did offer refund and 50% reduction for the first month which was very good of them. I have to say that's restored my faith in them (and I must check my spam traps more often!!) (edited)

Two responses in one. Dongle looks good, Customer Service excellent, signal you can't beat because of EE backbone etc. I have the lifelong £15 sim with renewable 100mins/100txts and 750mb data every month. I have yet to go for this Dongle but I am more interested in 5 year INTERNATIONAL Data sim for which you pay once, only 100mb per month but good enough for quick short WhatsApp etc

OK so on the rear of the box is an importer's label, underneath are some specs... it says LTE is B3 which might explain why Voda won't connect as that uses 7 and 20

I think this might be model aimed at China or other non european market and by luck it works on EE's B3 (although EE also use 7 and 20) - so why it's being given away so cheaply.... it's a limited 4G device

I am still undecided as to its utility value as a hotspot.

Would it need to be plugged into a laptop to function as a hotspot ? OR any power source (power bank) would suffice to power it as a hotspot and "behave" as a genuine mobile MiFi like device. IF so workable its agenuine bargain.

Also the unlocking bit still bothers me since it says only RWG and EE Sim will work.
    spannerzone's avatar
I'll let you know when mine arrives.... I hoped it'll work as a wireless hotspot when plugged into a power bank and also hope I can unlock it for free/cheap.

I'm getting this to use as a fall back 4G device for my modem router that supports USB modems like this, so if my fibre fails, this'll take over.

    Any further success stories, Spannerzone?
    spannerzone's avatar
Not yet.... I'm playing with it now but so far I cannot get it work with my working Vodafone sim, it simply won't connect and shows unknown network, reading reviews of these devices on Amazon show many others having problems like this. I think this is one of those generic devices that gets resold with various unknown Chinese 'brands' - no one knows who actually makes it, there's no support out there that I can find. EE and RWG sims work ok

As a USB device plugged into a PC, it seems problematic if you have another nework connected.... this device is a modem/router which clashes with my ethernet connection...so I need to disable that to test it. I suppose that won't be an issue for typical dongle users.

Here's the same looking device on Amazon: Link1 Link2 Link3 (edited)

Doesn't this have to be unlocked by law?

I think that only relates to handsets. (edited)

Thanks Spanerzone and Innocen for your inputs.

I am buying one now, based on the assumption that other sims will also work without too much tinkering (Im not a techy). The fact that it can be used with a powerbank is a plus to provide wifi around.

Meantime, can you update how it plays with other active Sims ?(Besides EE and RWG , of course)

    WIll be useful.

    Tks n Regds

I had a quick try again with a working Vodafone voice/data sim and try as I might, it will not connect.. it doesn't give any error (like a sim locked device might) - I can enter the Vodafone APN settings, this dongle can accept up to 5 different carrier APNs and it saves them but it shows "LTE disconnected" - so I think it's not authenticating with Voda, but is getting a signal. So probably needs some tweaks.

Plugging in the RWG sim and a reboot, the thing connects to RWG no problem and has remembered the RWG apn along with Voda etc. I am sure it's just me setting up wrong.

Banker's hours! Only joking. A lot of enjoyment for £10. I am sure the Dongle is OK. 5G ones are very expensive anyway. I am pretty certain or at least hopeful that £15 credit will stay on the sim/account even after 1st month. Customer service would have the definitive answer but they wouldn't say. Or you could leave a few pence /mb on the sim card and try the following month. Sorry it is a shaggy dog story! (edited)
  13. dragon2611's avatar
Not sure about the sim that comes with this but RWG's other data only sims apparently support data pooling which is nice if you have multiple devices you need data sims for.
  14. Nfakkhan's avatar
Can other devices connect wirelessly to this device is it just like a router?
    jd121's avatar
It's a wireless hotspot so I'm assuming that's its function. Thought doesn't state amount of users.
  15. SkipRat's avatar
are these better than an old handset setup as a hotspot?
  16. seabee05's avatar
Why are these different than just hotspotting of a phone?

Still waiting for it to arrive!..... it has said 'dispatched' since middle of last week but no tracking or courier info given. I suspect Frank, their one and only part time office worker had a long easter break (I am making a wild guess!)

They've already stated the next billing date is 2nd May which is quite cheeky if they take 2 weeks to deliver then expect you to pay for the followng 'month' two weeks later! - I shall likely cancel the second payment upon taking delivery but don't want to cancel until it actually arrives. (edited)

I'm another unhappy customer. Ordered on 1. April, was billed on 3rd April but nothing has arrived. This might be a scam. The phone line says: no customer representative is available. And they don't reply to e-mails.
    spannerzone's avatar
RWG are a genuine company but I think they have poor customer service, at least that's my experience on this one purchase. I'm not in a hurry but no updates other it now says it's dispatched but no tracking info or anything, all pretty poor and if they expect to bill automatically one month after purchasing, but not delivered and activated, then they need to rethink things. (edited)
  19. spannerzone's avatar
Well still no news, no response to email enquiry, order shows as 'delivery' (previously said 'dispatched') but no further info, I'm glad it's only £10 but this will make me think twice about doing any further business with RWG. (edited)

It was nice of you to reply while at work and I thank you for that. I have the luxury of retirement. Yeah, for a Dongle it would be a full size sim card, at least not a Nano. My main interest was whether the £15 credit would stay till you use it up at your own pace! Pity one has to strictly renew it unless one cancels it. Sorry you lost 2 weeks usage but not a bad deal all told for a tenner. The Dongle could always go to the back of the bottom drawer over time. Maybe catch up with you after work if there is anything further.
    spannerzone's avatar
OK back home and it is a 3 in 1 SIM card, I can't be 100% sure about the data, only that my RWG account listed the SIM renewal on 2nd May which was 30 days after my dongle/sim order...and it said it renews on the 2nd May with no obvious way to change this.... you might hope it would start upon first use (like most other companies) so that might be the case but the online account details didn't suggest that.

I think this dongle is open WRT capable, so ideal to tinker with, and as a standalone wifi hotspot (with a suitable, separate power supply or powerbank) it makes a handy and fairly speedy way to share data among devices. I will play a bit more when I have time and report back.

Spannerzone is probably at work to answer your question straight away from what I understand.
Say even if is locked (which I doubt very much), it will be to EE and so you can do the unlocking for free through EE by using the EE link 🔗I have provided in my earlier comment
and entering the IMEI number. It doesn't matter whether it's locked or not, you can still check.
Maybe has already tested with other network sims to ascertain whether the Dongle is locked or not.
    Onlydongles's avatar
Great. Cant be a bad bargain 4G MiFi for a tenner ( albeit with a power source ) . Can be tethered to a wall/mains USB charger and no worry of Battery degradation !
  22. Onlydongles's avatar
    Thanks your input, Spannerzone.

Are you still going to tinker with this till yu crackit, or planning to give up ?

I am wondering if I should cancel my order (no info on delivery yet) in view of your issues.

Via email, they definitely mentioned to me its a customised Huawei E3372.

Thanks. If that's the case, should be able to get unlock code by Googling.

Interestingly, I only just noticed on RWG page it states: Only works with EE/RWG network

So might explain why no vodafone luck.... perhaps it does have some SIM lock.... but it doesn't give any warning when inserting Voda/Three sim..... the challenge will continue
    innocent's avatar

Ah that probably explains. There are some eBay sites which claim to provide unlock codes for £ or 2 but free is better!

I might be the only one who had this problem but I can't help:
    IT IS A SCAM.
The £10.00 were charged to my card on the same day I placed the order (1. April). The simcard arrived on 18.04., but it could not log onto the network. I checked the APN settings which differed from their website, changed settings still no luck. Tried to phone RWG: you can't. The message says they're unavailble and will call me back, but no possibility to leave a message. I had several e-mail exchanges with their support staff, with instructions but none of this solved the problem.
The simcard will not log into the system for internet access.
I checked the simcard in my factory unlocked tablet (with the pre-installed APN settings): can't log in.
I then checked the dongle with an EE-simcard borrowed from a neighbour: works fine.
So I concluded something is wrong with the simcard sent to me in the dongle.
RWG then requested that I e-mail them the long number imprinted on the simcard. Which I did. Since then silence from their support staff.
I was frustrated that I wasted so much time on what should be "plug-and-play" and wrote to them on 19.04. requesting to cancel my contract.
    Silence......
until 1. May: an automated e-mail arrived informing me that the next billing cycle had started and the monthly fee would be debited from my card.
I complained on 2. May that the simcard did not work and had never worked and that I had cancelled the contract already earlier. The next automated e-mail arrival confirming cancellation as per 2. May.
And sure enough on 3. May my card was debited.
RWG is not replying to my complaint and the telephone number just has an announcement "our agents are unavailable right now, but we will get back to you shortly".
Edit (12.05.2023): My e-mail complaint was answered and they refunded the second payment. Which leaves me with an expensive test of a network locked dongle. (edited)
