If you're "cleat curious" and unsure about unclipping, you can use the SH56 easy-release cleats

True, but I've never understood the point of these as any pull force unclips the cleat? I'm only a road cyclist, so I assume it's a MTB thing?

I have one road bike with SPD and one with SPD-SL. SPD are ok if you are after a compromise so that you can walk in your shoe too, but they are no way near as good as SPD-SL for use on the bike particularly if you want a firm clip in with no float. (edited)

Not much of a comparison, though. You can get five pairs of SPD 520s for the price of the speedplays with enough left over for a couple of pints, and you can't walk properly with Speedplay cleats on. Maybe Speedplays might be worth it for high mileage roadies who need adjustable float, but the 520s are really for on-off-road riding on a budget, which they're great for.

Always this price, unless bought at a shop. Literally just had a set delivered. Great pedals though but not a deal

I needed a pair two weeks ago and couldn’t find anything under £32. Wiggle and Chain Reaction were the first l checked. Hot for me (edited)

Nothing special about this price. They're always around 25

Brillaint pedals have them on all my bikes including spin bikes. The are as others say bombproof. One bike they get a very hard life yet spin and work perfectly even if they are years old.

As for the price I say fairly standard at present, chainr reaction and few just the same, I never pay over £20 - £21 and bought some a couple of months ago.

Does anyone have a recommendation for good shoes for these? I have some Decathlon ones that are wearing out and want to replace with road shoes that fit SPD cleats. Had a look on Tredz, wiggle etc but if someone has first hand expertise that would be appreciated

Personally I like Shimano as they seem a good fit for me, have used 'touring' ones in the past and currently using some bling 'gravel' ones I got on a deal recently (sorry don't have the exact model information to hand)

I had these for a couple of years and one of them started creaking and became very stiff to turn, I put back the lower version that I had for 4years without issue, just my experience.

SPD 520s are servicable. Whip them apart using the special spd tool (TL-PD40), replace the grease and reassemble and they'll probably be fine.

If you have a local Go Outdoors, they should beat this price by 10%
