Details

Find yourself at the heart of every movie and series. 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray shows everything in finer detail than ever before, so you feel like youre seeing the real thing. Go deeper into the detail with High Dynamic Range (HDR). Combined with the clarity of 4K, HDR brings previously hidden areas alive with new brightness, shades and colours. HDR signals contain up to 100x the brightness of a standard (SDR) signal, massively increasing peak brightness while retaining deep and highly-detailed blacks, for an entirely new viewing experience.

Listen as lightning cracks, sirens wail, and car horns blare all around you in startling clarity with Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the leading audio codecs favoured by cinemas everywhere. Dolby Atmos treats sounds as separate objects, releasing them from typical channels to move freely around and even above you, for deeply immersive surround sound.

Support for the new BT.2020 colour spaces means access to a much wider range of colours than conventional TV signals offer. This ultra-wide colour space means content creators can deliver much more saturated and realistic colour, from deep aquatic blues to natural greens and vibrant reds.

Upscale the frequency and dynamic range of MP3s and other compressed music and even your CDs to near high-resolution quality, so you can get the full experience of the original recording. DTS:X can create an unlimited number of audio objects which adapt to your speakers in real time, to get the biggest impact out of every movie soundtrack.

    Full specs:

The only major drawback of this model is that Dolby-Vision selection is manual rather than automatic.

That bothered me for a while. There are two solutions:
    1. Start playing a 4K disc and press [Display] on the remote. If it shows Input as Dolby Vision then exit to Sttings and turn the DV option On (if not already On).
    2. Leave DV on. If the disc is not DV then I believe it effectively generates DV meta data to give an 'improved' picture on a DV TV. Pressing [Display] should show Input as HDR but Output as DV.
Personally, I now leave the DV option on all the time and don't worry about it.
P.S. This is a large/long player so had to be placed sideways to fit on my unit next to the TV. However, as there is no display and and as the remote still works well I am very happy with it.

What HiFi review in 2019 states player was £350 then, so £239:99 a good price drop IMO, given inflation etc.

Very decent player but I'd spend the extra for the award winning Panasonic UB820

Yes me too, but it doesn’t support DVD-A or SACD if someone needs it.

Can you play normal 4K dvds on this or is it only for blue ray DVDs?
    chip75's avatar
None of those are actual formats. There's DVDs (Digital Versatile Discs) which are standard definition, Blu-ray discs which are generally 1080p or high definition, and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray discs which are ultra high definition.

This will play all three. (edited)

im selling a bluray player for 35£ so I dont know what this does for over £200 more. does it clean your house while you watch?
    kobrakaan1's avatar
It plays 4K UHD MOVIES whereas your Blu-ray player can only play blu-rays 🤷‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

I don't understand why anyone would buy this and not ps5?

Well the processing for image and sound will be better on this. And supports more format.

The UB820 is also on offer at 20% off, making it £290. Not sure whether to pull the trigger, or if it'll ever go to around £240-260 again?

I’d pay extra for Panasonic over the Sony. Not sure when the next price drop will be since it’s in demand and the full price increased from £300 to £349. (edited)

I paid £299 on release for this well over a year or more now ago so this needs to probably be nearer £200

So it’s now nearer £200 then.

I got a Pioneer dvd565a back in the day, that bad boy played SACD and DVD-A, only difference I ever found was that SACDs and DVD-As cost more and were harder to get! (edited)

Clearly, your amp and speakers weren't up to it....or, hearing (edited)

Stuck between this and the Panasonic mentioned on recent thread. I guess the latter is better if you want the best picture and sound? Am usually a Sony fan, but I am a bit ocd with going for best result lol.
    chip75's avatar
The Panasonic can be worse for DVDs, but it has the Optimizer which can be very beneficial, especially if you have a lower spec display.

I'm genuinely interested, why do people buy blueray nowadays when HDR films etc are available via streaming?
    krisdeb's avatar
Audio quality. The picture is much better and I own the content. I have a second bluray in my gym with not so good internet access and with most 4ks I have another bluray copy. I also don't care much about the streaming or subscriptions, my content is always available.

Are these one of those cup holders people used to talk about 5 years go? (edited)

Never seen a single physical player which can slow down PAL DVDs by 4% to get the true original speed therefore given up buying them entirely in favour of PC.
