Boy, do fans of the original book author hate this movie. But in fairness the film's director hated the author of the book, and with just cause.

Well no the real reason is this >

"There’s nothing “wrong with” the movie, it’s just intentionally contemptuous of the source-material.

Heinlein was an old-school warrior type at heart, and he wrote Starship Troopers intended as a serious meditation on what it might mean to engage “war” with enemies the likes of which we’d never encountered before.

He focused on the philosophical implications of modern warfare, and expressed a great love and respect for the tradition of sacrifice men have been expected to make on a regular basis throughout history, simply for being members of society.

Paul Verhoeven is a Dutch man who’d been a child in Holland when the Nazis were rampaging across Europe.

He read Starship Troopers and was horrified by the kind of reverence and passion Heinlein had put into the book in praise of “the military.”

He directed the movie as an intentionally gruesome satire of virtually all the important material in the book. He mocked all the “great men” who Heinlein lionized.

He delivered a major gut-punch to the audience by blowing a recruit’s head up by accident in a training exercise because he wanted to focus on the nature of the arbitrary horrors of warfare. I saw the movie in the theater, and much of the audience literally GROANED after a half second’s dead silence, which I’m sure Verhoeven would’ve loved to know.

Most everyone of some wisdom understands that modern warfare is the closest approximation of something like “hell” that humanity can subject itself to.

Both Heinlein and Verhoeven were trying to present that theme, they just came at it from 180 degree different perspectives.

As to what that has to do with Minihan’s premonition?

Not much, given that the movie was released 25 years ago.

The US military has been worrying about war with China since the end of WWII. It’s just part of that tradition."

When you say with just cause this does a complete disservice to Robert A Heinlein's vision in portraying this story >

"Fans of Heinlein were critical of the movie, which they considered a betrayal of Heinlein's philosophy, presenting the society in which the story takes place as fascist.[65] Likewise, the powered armor technology that is not only central to the book but became a standard subgenre of science fiction thereafter, is completely absent in the movie, where the characters use World War II-technology weapons and wear light combat gear little more advanced than that.[66] Verhoeven commented that he had tried to read the book after he had bought the rights to it, in order to add it to his existing movie. However he read only the first two chapters, finding it too boring to continue. He thought it was a bad book and asked Ed Neumeier to tell him the story because he could not read it"
