4 Bay still using the Intel chip so good for hardware transcoding if needed, akin to the DS920+. Arguably, this lacks 2.5/10gbps cabling if you need it for future proofing.

Can save another £10 using a fee free card making this c. £400!

You'll need a UK power alead incase this comes with a EU power lead. These can be found on ebay/amazon for fairly cheap price.

There's more than one way to skin a cat, as the saying goes. Food for thought here. Amazon have the little N95 and N100 PCs from Trigkey and Beelink (same thing). For under £200 you can have one with USB C and twin 2.5G Networking (plus Wi-Fi 6E). You then have lots of options for USB C RAID Enclosures, for example a naked 5 Bay Terramaster with RAID support for £189. So we are at £389.

So either use windows or remove the OS and add True NAS as an example and you have an excellent setup. The PC runs on a trickle, 9 Watts on Average and you are very future proof for storage. The CPU is Alderlake 'E' Core based, so fast quad core and efficient. IF you fancy getting your fingers burned, then a sensible solution for some perhaps1?

WD also have the Dual Bay RAID Enclosures which need to be bought populated, but considering the cost of storage, they are usually sensible and this, again, USB Capable, plugged into a mini PC will again give a robust solution. Heavy ingoing cost with the drives included, so won't suit everyone.

Unless you need VERY bespoke Synology Software, this should have what most folks need for a fraction of the cost, mile more performance and bandwidth and the potential to simply add cheap 2.5GBe USB LAN dongles (under £20) as need to improve speeds in the years to come? Assuming you'll stick it up on a shelf or in the loft or similar, it won't look too ugly, the mini PC will easily sit on top of the RAID Storage Box, so similar footprint to the traditional NAS?

True NAS is a free Download and very simple to use these days. Not exactly Plug 'n' play, but a very rewarding project and a good few quid save overall.

    Here's links to the 'bits':-

Download TrueNAS CORE - Completely Free NAS OS

    TRIGKEY Mini PC W11 Desktop 12th Gen Intel N100(4Core, Up to 3.4GHz) G5 16G DDR4 500G PCIE1 SSD Dual Ethernet Mini Computer, Support Micro Computer W10 Pro/WiFi 6/BT5.2/Dual 2.0 HDMI/Triple Output : Amazon.co.uk: Computers & Accessories

Hope this may help somebody out there? Obviously loads of different ways to do this, but it has far superior performance and the ZFS File System in True NAS is very robust and easily added to as the years go on.

This is one idea I've explored in my recent months of research and as nice of idea it is on paper, it doesn't work well in practice as RAID over USB with a DAS is an accident waiting to happen. Also TrueNAS won't let you do anything but JBOD with USB drives unless you force an array over command line. (edited)

There was NEVER a moment in computer history when transcoding made any sense. For heaven's sake, learn to play the native video file. It ain't rocket science.

What if you have multiple users all accessing 40gb blu-ray rips at the same time?

As you say the lack of 2.5Gb or 10Gb really limits this. Going to hold off upgrading until they fix it.

smb multichannel can give a reasonable boost if you are happy to run an extra cable

Really hope we can get something close to this price from a UK seller this year. This is a great price but I'm not sure I feel comfortable running the risk of spending this much money to essentially waive my warranty in the process.

I have purchased as am looking for my first NAS server. At this price point and with its current features - I expect this to serve me well for the next couple of years. Synology apps look to have a good credibility for a basic plug and play user.

Use case wise - I am in need central location to store all my data rather than have it live on the X amount of laptops/PCs/phones as backup and accessible through my network; although am not regularly (and not expected to be) moving double digit GBs around.

Most, if not all, of my networking hardware is at 1GbE too.

Price is very compelling for me based on the above. (edited)

Check out the synology DS220+ it’s a 2 bay nas, same os as this one. Save yourself a shed load of cash for a domestic set up

Worth noting that this model officially supports M.2 drives as volumes, which means you can actually run 6 drives in there.

If you want faster network either run dual cables to a switch that can handle link aggregation or get the 923+ and upgrade the port.

Bought this earlier in the year when it came out for around £480 so this is a good price. Excellent performance and to be honest 1gb dual NICs mean I get around 112mb/s transfer sustained peak which is plenty for me to transfer and watch 4k streams to my TV. Good price for this, voted Hot!

If you are using both ports, you should be getting literally double that speed. 8 bits in a byte, so 1GBit = 1000 Bits. Divide by 8 so 113Mb/sec on each Gigabit LAN port. 2 ports should give you close to the 226MB/sec. As reference a single 2.5GBe would or should give 2500/8 = circa 300MB/sec, but usually nearer 280 with overhead etc on the port). Near all modern (ish) HDDs will do circa 250+ MB/sec. Check you have your link aggregation set up properly. £480 is a lot of money for such slow speeds these days... Most modern Wi-Fi (AX or E) will do better than this even. Maybe your router at home / office is stuck at Gigabit and this might be throttling you too? You'll only go as fast as the slowest element in your network. You might find that by running 2 x cables to your router and connect to it via Wi-Fi 6 or better that you'll potentially get a higher transfer rate? Seems counter-productive to ditch the LAN, but the LAN from the router to the TV or gadget might be the weak link?

If you’re concerned about future proofing then get an 8 bay. You can then add a 10GB card, SSD cache, have 4 port bonding and plenty of storage for a while. I’d go with getting the best NAS you can afford rather than the one that is on offer. You can always populate gradually.

Shame on Synology for not including 2.5Gb network interfaces in these new models. They barely represent much of an upgrade over their x20 predecessors. Cold. (edited)
