Is this better than Google maps then? And do you get a prompt that you will start paying in 12m time, or do you have to remember
    Dodge62's avatar
It's better in that you can load GPX routes into it. Google Maps is much better in terms of finding places you want to go to, but you have to take one of the routes it chooses rather than planning a route yourself.

I use Google Maps in the car, but TomTom when I'm on the bike and want to plan my route in advance on interesting roads.

Also, on the app it’s tricky to get past the free trial
Screen. Do plan options, restore purchases, which will fail, then it prompts for login for subscribers online. From there log in and it will “migrate” the subscription. And give you a free bonus month! Which is better than a kick in the lederhosen.

Thank you! I kept downloading and deleting the app cause I couldn’t figure out how to avoid subscribing again through Apple storen

i got this last time but it did not work properly. removed it straightaway, complete rubbish.

How can so many people mark unsubstantiated claim as 'Helpful'. It says nothing about the issues the poster encountered? Was it posted by the TomTom;s competition?

    Better off using Waze

    Weird
It seems to have started a subscription for free, first year, but the app says it runs out in July for me.

TomTom chat reveals this: ‘This is for new users only, though as you have redeemed it somehow on TomTom website , You will be able to use it once your Apple subscription ends , Remember you cancel the auto renewal from Apple’

I’m not sure though, as I haven’t got an active Apple subscription for TomTom, according to the iPhone/ipad.

All that said, I tend to use Waze.
Only issue with that is if the phone signal goes for some reason occasionally, the app loses location.
I only had tomtom as backup (via a previous dodgy hukd deal), hoping that the maps are always on the phone, as they used to be under the now discontinued previous tomtom app that got ended, after I’d paid ‘lifetime’ subs for it. (edited)

If you're bothered about having the map data on the phone and don't want to pay, Google maps.
  6. PonJaul76's avatar
Don't see the point. Why not just Google or apple maps ?
    goblinsta's avatar
Google Map is really bad at offering alternative routes. If there is a traffic jam, you most probably will get stuck in it with Gmaps, Tomtom find much better optiions

I purchased a subscription via the website, however when I download the app via iPhone, the app requires restoring a subscription via my Apple ID and I am unable to locate a login section that allows me to login with a separate TomTom account, any help is much appreciated.
    Rimi's avatar
Simple. In TomTom app select restore purchase, then log in to iCloud, message says no active subscriptions, click log in and log in using same email you have purchased this subscription. All done!

    Waze is free and better
  9. pupcake's avatar
Final update from me - you can “cancel” the subscription on the website, but it stays active in the app to the right date, just stops it auto renewing I think.
    Pspvita's avatar
Are you sure about this have you tried it.
  10. zzzzac's avatar
Just create a new account and use that, did the same with mine when this was free last November. (edited)
  11. bobbitchin's avatar
Complete carnage when I did this a few years back as it charged me twice for a single subscription that was supposed to be free. When I complained I got the usual Teutonic response:- "tough". The app is total waste of space:- you can't simply type where you wish to go by using a postcode, etc. I doesn't 'know' anywhere or anything and so I just deleted it. When I had a proper Tom Tom GPS, I took it back as it was a total loonatic: taking me over muddy farm lanes and up the sides of steep hills with no relevance to a route that I could see. Shambolic company.
    amoulden's avatar
52481740-z87Jj.jpgYou can just type in a postcode
  12. HonestSi's avatar
I found it a bit buggy so deleted. Can’t beat Waze…
    FallGuy0510's avatar
Waze user here as well and was curious as to whether changing to TomTom was worth it
  13. Samlghughes's avatar
How does this compare to waze?
    amoulden's avatar
More reliable especially live traffic and routing
  14. saabuldin's avatar
Why would I want to use this over Google maps. Just curious?
    HaraldBB's avatar
    no adverts everywhere,
    cleaner UI,
counting average speed on roads with average speeds cameras,
offline maps without need to reload manually every few weeks.
  15. Cipher_Choize's avatar
    Who is using TomTom now..............???????
    Just use Waze far better.....
  16. TiscaliSurvivor's avatar
Tomtom ripped me off years back - lost all trust in them. So I Wazed goodbye to them.
  17. dooper's avatar
Is there a Nav App that not only allows you to avoid Motorways but also avoid single track roads with passing places?
    Zosia's avatar
TomTom loves single track roads and sends me often on sightseeing trips and countryside lanes, to avoid traffic queues. Sometimes, I can't belive I'm still within M25 or in Greater London, (edited)
  18. SPLE22's avatar
Tom tom didn't innovate. Now they are scrambling to get some market share back.

They got complacent in the 2000s. (edited)
    rudey_valentino's avatar
They stayed GREEDY not complacent... When others gave you free software
  19. Yakkyda's avatar
How many people here place their satnavs /phones on their windscreen in a position that obscures their view of the road ahead?
    Go on, admit it..
Why do some people even do that? Is this why there's such an awful standard of driving nowadays? 52481584-qqAww.jpg
    amoulden's avatar
    And it's illegal
  20. mb1's avatar
I have really tried to like this, but I keep going back to Waze. The voices never work and it takes ages to load on my Pixel.
    amoulden's avatar
Works great on my pixel 7 ?
  21. nictry's avatar
Tried never having used tomtom before and just says error has occurred and won’t place order. Maybe it’s been pulled now?
    GlennTheBaker's avatar
I'm getting the same. The discount code takes the total down to £0.00 but I then cannot get through the checkout.
  22. CeeJayCee's avatar
    Appears we’ve killed their website!
  23. mchu6am4's avatar
Is this for iPhone only as I cannot get it to work on android and following sign up only app store link is shown?
  24. Sabs85's avatar
Hi, would this be good for HGV lorry routes or is this better suited for cars only?
    Gordinho's avatar
Someone on this site put me onto Road Lords, it's an android app designed to choose the best route for your truck, van or other types of large vehicle. It also covers live traffic information from roads - incidents, police controls, speed cameras and much more.

I've used it in my campervan and got on well with it. (edited)
  25. pupcake's avatar
Thanks op. Just to help others, it won’t work if you’ve got an active subscription, and won’t work if you’ve used the code previously when buying (once per account).
    bigdaverdinger1's avatar
I have a Tom Tom pro with lifetime updates though I'd have a back up on my phone but no go
  26. mcallim7's avatar
didn't realise this was still a thing!
is it worth the effort with Google/Apple/Waze all free
    ozk's avatar
It just feels easier to navigate with - but it’s really crap with final destination points.
still - my go to gps and for feee is ace.
cant be beat for speed cameras and your current speed.
  27. shell99's avatar
If I cancel subscription will I continue to get it for the year ?
    Aidan_Gee's avatar
I just saw another comment mentioning that you can cancel straightaway and still get the full year
  28. bossk's avatar
Annoying, I can't find a way to sign in on my Android phone using a different account, i.e. the one I used to purchase.
    bossk's avatar
Ah, I found the part that asks 'restore purchases' so a log in then works well.
  29. global's avatar
Thanks TomTom for constantly trying to get me in a bus lane...
    bobbitchin's avatar
Precisely. Completely lame the whole thing

Garmin or Google Maps ftw. Don't TomTom charge for basics like speed camera alerts?
Waze is good but its aggressive traffic rerouting to save 2 mins is a headache in big cities. (edited)
  32. Niz's avatar
I'd advise to try yourself if you're curious enough to have clicked through to comments, I much prefer tomtom/AmiGO for long new journeys as lane guidance is much better, and google/waze for local/usual journeys for traffic.
  33. redduck's avatar
I appreciate that it's free but is it better than Google Maps on your phone? I don't want to sign up for something I won't use and then get charged after 12 months. (edited)
    Atoins's avatar
For travelling long distances I use the Tomtom satnav device but for the phone, I prefer Google maps. I installed the Tomtom app in November with another 12 months trial and I really don't like it. I tried it several times and I had to close it and use Google maps because I couldn't find anything.
  34. zchari5's avatar
Does this work in Italy? Any other app recommendations for Italy? Going on hols this August

    Google maps
  35. 18nine04's avatar
So if you set the status to cancelled, it cancels at the end of the subs and not immediate? I got slightly nervous because it didn't state that it would cancel in April 2025.
    SnoopZ's avatar
When you log in to your TomTom account and cancel your subscription you should get an email saying it's cancelled and if you wish you can continue to use it for 12 months.
  36. sufy123's avatar
Does the subscription auto renew or do i need to cancel the subscription so it doesn't charge me?
    Zikohh's avatar
It auto renews so cancel it now you won't lose the subscription
  37. anuruddha's avatar
Any difference on this and Google maps or here maps
    sdaniaal's avatar
No you just pay for a worse ui
  38. alasdair67's avatar
Awful experience trying to purchase this. If the app is anything like their website, I can 100% see why people don’t bother with TomTom anymore.
  39. No_Data's avatar
What does this offer that Google Maps & Waze do not?
    Rimi's avatar
Traffic. It is 100% spot on wherever you go. Also, best navigation when in EU. I have tried all sat nav apps available, also side by side with TomTom and TomTom blows them all out of the water.
