FYI if you need to manually override to turn a switch on set the default state to custom, then when you switch the socket off and back on the bulb lights.

These light bulbs are good but the only issue I have is resetting them which seems to be quite difficult. Recently our router was faulty so we had it changed by an engineer. I had to reconnect all the smart devices but for some reason could not install these tapo bulbs as it just wouldn't connect. Resetting was difficult but I think I've found a way to get around this.

For future reference - a quick and easy way to avoid having to reconnect all your devices to your new router is to change the SSID and password to that of the old router. Devices should connect up with no issue as to them nothing has changed 😁

Can I use these with echo dot 3?
    leifi76's avatar
Yes. As these don't require a dedicated hub and connect to your WiFi directly they'll work with any model echo.

After setting the bulbs up in the tapo app you'll then need to link your tapo account in the alexa app -> devices -> "+" -> add device -> (search for tapo).

    Hope this helps.

Sorry, really new to smart lights so please bear with me!

Do these need smart plugs to work? Or are they the equivalent of a smart plug with an ordinary bulb (I don't even know if that works!)?
    MackinsVII's avatar
No, they connect to your home WiFi, then they are controllable with the app and Google Home etc...

Bought this recently, stopped working after about a week. Philips Hue bulb is in a league of its own, the Hue bulb has lasted me years and is a much better product overall.

    No.

Are these bright enough with a warm white to light a room? Obviously, bigger rooms have more light fittings, but could I read a book or see to eat a meal?

I have white only energy saving bulbs which allow the above activities, but are a little harsh. It would be nice to change to a different colour to relax.

These are 806 lumens, which is the equivalent of an old style 60W bulb so should be enough for a medium size room. I have a couple of these in floor lamps and they're plenty bright in our ~5m x ~3m living room.

Can someone please explain how these work and if they are energy efficient. Do you have to leave the light switch on the whole time and if so doesn't that use electricity?
    taffyjock1's avatar
Yes they are always powered but this is a watt or 2 for WiFi, compared with leaving the landing on all day just so it's not pitch black when you come home, or getting into bed and a light being left on but you CBA to go an turnnit off.
  11. smiler03's avatar
They use 8.7 Watts so yes, they are energy efficient.

Yes the light switch needs to be on all the time and the bulb is using electricity when it is on standby. However it is a miniscule amount, somewhere between 0.15 and 0.5 watts (using a Google search)

Worst case annual consumption = 0.5 x 24 x 365 = 4,38 kW per year at 32p per kW = £1.40 a year at the worst case usage, Note that you will presumably have the lights on for a while so the standby usage would be zero for those hours.

    * please don't shoot me if your calculation is different. I'm using £0.32 per kWh from my EDF Tariff and if I wrongly capitalised letters and referred to Kw instead of kWh etc etc

    Would these be bright enough?
    EggEgg's avatar
    They are very bright!

For those struggling to reconnect make sure your phone using the app is on the same wifi network 2.4ghz or 5ghz if your router has 2 connections. Yes the APP can be very frustrating. I've got a pair of SES bulbs as wall lights that lose connection nearly every time he router is reset but all the large bayonet ones seems fine. Flicking the lights off and on 3 times resets them so if your kids like playing with the light switch you'll have fun

Echo 4 or echo dot 5 will act as a hub
    RhysyPoos's avatar
These are WiFi, not ZigBee, there's no hub required. Your WiFi router is ultimately what controls these.
  15. AzeemB's avatar
There is no widget for android phones, so you can simply tap to turn on etc,
you need to open the app then select the bulb

people have already complained about that, and tp-link dont seem to have done anything yet.

one of mine went faulty, still a nice bulb.

while not really any issue the bulbs colours jump rather than fade when selecting a colour or changing a colour.

does this have a daylight simulation mode?

where the colour of the white light changes from blue to warm. so you don't stay awake at night?
    Ralph888's avatar
Yes fully adjustable from daylight to warm white

Good find, thx. Ordered instead the GU10 sets, also running with a healthy discount. 🔥

Yeh these are good , just wish the app had a widget for my home screen. My mum's cheapo one from some Chinese company had a widget so that's a bit annoying.

My Yeelights are a bit dodge after 5 years (I'd expect twice as long), flickering and occasionally failing to turn on. Are these really any better? I'm a bit fed up with the Xiaomis anyhow - different batches of bulbs render different colours, so you can't get four in a room to actually sync up.

I have this. Philips hue, whilst considerably more expensive, I’ve found is much better
  21. paulw123's avatar
Hue colours are just so rich and a 2year no quibble warranty, dynamics scenes that change colour are my favourite thing...

Just installed these on the bedroom but I have a dimmer switch which is playing havoc with them changing the switch in the morning to a simple one
