I'm aware of that. How about other countries which are already enjoying temperature and humidity comparable to UK summer? Or is the UK special somehow? Also, are you aware that there is more than 1 strain of COVID-19 already, and that we have never achieved herd immunity to any illnesses (such as influenza), without mass vaccination?

dogpatch

We are in the northern hemisphere, it is still winter.

gemniz

So I guess the UV suppressive factor has worked in other countries so far then?

gemniz

Unbelievable. I literally said 'no one knows what will happen'. Yes experts make predictions, but in the case of this novel virus, noone knows. I personally would go by the recommendations of the WHO, the experts in virus science, but because I live in the UK I am somewhat bound by what Boris Johnson and his behavioural scientists are guessing. Make your own decisions based on your own research, and I will do the same.

dogpatch

SARS2 is a highly infectious virus with a seemingly high basic reproduction number. It has evaded most control measures by virtue of it's long asymptomatic infectious period. That means it will peak quite quickly leaving a high proportion of the population immune. That is why epidemics always taper off. Add to that the UV suppressive effects of even a British summer and the chances of an epidemic being sustained into August September are virtually zero. THAT is a sensible prediction. Predicting it's spread in the short to medium term is more problematic which is why I, very specifically, mentioned only late summer. I don't recall even mentioning NHS capacity?

In which case such people have no reason to vote on the deal. I have no interest in whether they can afford this or not. What matters is that this is an excellent hotel and the price is very good.

dogpatch

My students see this hotel before they endure another dose of enthalpy calculations. It reminds them they are working towards glittering prizes and where I will be in September

mikhail.semenov

Boooooooo, please don't post this. Not all of us are the 1%

dogpatch

This one was predictable. If you normally spend £335 on an entire holiday a 40% reduction on a £500+ room, even in an iconic hotel, is not going to look good. That said, if I was prone to despair I wouldn't have emerged from retirement to teach chemistry to bewildered sixth formers ( the salary from which just happens to be paying for a suite here in September and Madinat in December )..

So you're saying Thanos was on to something? :)

Lakesman

Well, we've all gotta die sometime! Maybe this is Mother Earth's way of having a clear out! Best way to combat global warming/climate change/climate emergency or whatever scare mongering phrase is flavour of the month is to limit the amount of people living on it! Maybe Mother Earth is sorting things out herself and trying to have a cull? ..and with up to upto 202,000 aircraft in the sky every day, it's no wonder it is reaching far and wide. That is an actual snapshot of all the aircraft on the ground and in the air right now (taken from FR24 website). ......and some people think turning a light off when we leave the room make a goddam difference!

AgentDaleCooper

I agree this is true for most cases but from what Ive heard, there are occasions of fit, healthy people dying from it with conditions they didn't even know they had. Why risk it?

XxLJCJxX

Dont get me wrong, I'm not afraid of contracting it. But I am afraid of my holiday being cancelled or messed up (flights cancelled, hotel on lock down etc). Its the loss of finance which I'd be wary of. We all know what insurance companies can be like.

I take four holidays a year and change my mind. A lot. TravelRepublic have the best change/ cancellation policy out there. £40 to cancel but £25 if you rebook something else. I have been to Langkawi about 8-9 years ago. Hotels are relatively cheap in Malaysia. But I will not spend 460 a night unless I'm absolutely loaded, multi millionaire. We stayed at the hotel within walking distance of the airport for convenience, nothing grand for something like 40 a night with breakfast. Rented a car for a few days to drive around the island.

dogpatch

It isn't normally this price. Given that it is bordering on being 'last minute' I think they are probably reacting to Chinese cancellations

Malachi_X

Any particular reason it's so cheap at the moment or is this generally a good time to book a place like this for the summer?

Joe90_guy

Ah yes, I can just about remember The Gulai House. It was okay. However, at The Rhu, one night, I mentioned that I had developed a bit if taste for Fish Head Curry when I lived in Sing (sounds gross but is brill!). Oh really they say? Could the chef do such a meal for you & your wife tomorrow night? And they laid it on, FHC & all the trimming, just for us, no extra charge. That's what makes holidays special!

Immoraliste

I had the complete opposite experience in December (6 days). The Andaman couldn't have been more relaxing. There are two high tides and two low tides per day, so the sea does go out, but it doesn't really detract much from the experience (I can see how it might if it was always low tide at the time you used the beach, but that was never the case when I was there). I never encountered loud guests, there were always dozens of available recliners, and if you don't like who's near you, you literally have an entire white sand bay to chill out wherever you want, or you can kayak or paddle board to the uninhabited island on the bay. The Datai and The Andaman both have the same owner and are the only two properties on Datai Bay, so they share the same private beach, which is widely regarded as the best on Langkawi. The Datai is certainly a higher standard, more modern, and has better restaurants, but it's also a lot more expensive (Datai £400+ pn; Andaman £160pn using 5 nights for price of 4 promo on Marriott site). Went for dinner at The Datai (Gulati House) and the food was very good, the main reception area with a huge lilly pond with tiny frogs is amazing, and you get driven by buggy up and down winding tracks to get anywhere. Service was great at both hotels. They're both fairly priced for what they offer (I think The Andaman is outstanding value for £160pn if you get upgraded to a seaview room through Marriott status / Amex plat). All depends on your expectations, though! Attached one photo from The Andaman at high tide; one at low tide, for comparison. Also The Datai's lily pond.

woodbino

Absolutely. When we demand cheaper and cheaper products and excessively consume, someone somewhere is being exploited. Difficult to avoid in our consumerist capitalist society. One can try to make informed choices around their shipping habits, but it's hard. Sad when you think of the technology and resources we have, that many in the world still go without clean drinking water. Like many thinks, it's complicated. But anyways...!

foxyuk

Where do you think majority of the clothes we all wear are made ? Third world sweat houses , majority of workers in Dubai 88 percent are from Pakistan that work in construction or taxis. I spoke with a driver I was horrified to hear his earnings , work hours , sleeping conditions.

woodbino

For me it's their very poor human rights record that makes me not want to go. Construction workers in particular have been reported to be treated as slaves. We do live in a free countr, however, and one is free to choose to holiday there if they so please.

Sogaaddict

I can think of loads of places in that part of the world I’d sooner visit. Everyone to their own I guess.

It depends where you go. Checkout Domes Miramares in Corfu. It's often on offer on third party sites or a really cheap Marriott Bonvoy points redemption. It's a amazing hotel easily 4/5*

shortarms

I believe corfu is a lovely place, everywhere on this planet has good parts and bad parts. Be it countries or towns. All i would say is yes it does have some pebble beaches on one side of the island but the other has some amazing beaches. We are going for the forth year in a row this year, will be my 6th time. The people are lovely in my experience. We go to a new country we haven't been to before every year and haven't found somewhere as good as corfu yet. Dalayan, Fuerteventura, Alicante and this year Albufeira all been great places but not as good as Corfu.

RuudBullit

This is such a shame. i went around 18 years ago and thought it was lovely then, have always considered going back but I might not bother now. Won't Corfu still be a bit chilly in April too?

NewForestMonkeyBrains

Do you know what, I have to agree with some of your points. Rubbish piled everywhere along the roads. Stony beaches and half built houses everywhere. We liked our bit and travelled around by car, but I do know what you mean. Fair point, without doubt. And the airport....oh dear.

Gspaddock

I went for the first time last year for 3 nights as a last minute getaway. It was hot, lovely and hot. We stayed on the north coast and basically drive around for 3 days exploring all the towns/resorts. We drove all over the mountains and had some brilliant views and stopped at a cocktail bar on the cliff ‘seventh heaven’ I think it was called. Food was very cheap and the last day we pottered around Corfu Town which was pretty. The people were nice. But. The place is extremely run down. The supposed upmarket/beach towns are run down, pavement just end with massive drops to the ‘beach’. Yeah there is no beaches as such, it’s all stones. Thousands of buildings unfinished everywhere with rebar sticking out where there should have been an extra floor or two added. We stayed in a place that was rated 8.1 on booking.com, at best it was a 5. The standard is quite low. And the rubbish, where do I start with the rubbish? Landfill sites full so mountains of rubbish along the roadside every single day and every single turn, it’s not a great sight. Portugal (especially Algarve) cannot be compared to Corfu. I think other Greek islands are nicer. I’m not sure why I took the time to write this but I did :) . I won’t be going back and I’m glad my only visit was cheap. Oh and the airport is a dump too (although I think it was having some work done).

Not really, in swimming pool or static pools maybe, more so if its sunny. That aside, makes the Algarve water so cold, is something called "upwelling". Due to the winds, the warm water in the surface is diverted, causing the upwelling of deep and colder ocean waters.

There are many places I'd rather visit first and it isn't somewhere I'd dream of visiting due to the factual evidence of how they treat certain groups of people, and the draconian laws they have. Same here. I always use TR mostly because the cheap cancellation charge ( and partial refund of cancellation charge if another booking is made ) allows you to cancel and rebook if the hotel price goes down or if you change the booking completely. The cancellation charge of Destination2 is 70% of invoice total even if you cancel 6 months in advance.

Suprised at some of the comments about TR. I've used TR many times (>10), and never had any issues at all, always for hotel bookings only.

I also have been messed around by travel republic who took my money and failed to honour my booking. I had to claw back with my cc. AVOID!

Others may have different experiences, but have used a dozen or so online companies like this and would never use TR again. Atrocious customer service. Booked hotel room in Orlando with TR, confirmed and money taken. When we got there, no reservation. TR offered to get us a room in another hotel other end of Int Drive, but unable to call them back - just phone menus/ringing phone, no answer. Hours of hassle getting US phone cards to try and contact them in their UK office hours, waiting in queues, no answer. In the end we simply booked a room in the original hotel direct at the desk (cheaper than TR rate). TR not interested in any kind of compensation or even an apology afterwards as they 'offered us an alternative' - which we were unable to accept or decline as unable to contact them. Just many slow, snotty email responses. Not worth the stress again.

Stayed here, also did half board, this a lovely lovely hotel and service is absolutely first class. Personally not a huge fan of Dubai, however this place really is top drawer.
