Loads of reviews say these over heat to heck

That would be the SSDs that overheats.

It is all going to be down to what you are doing with the SSD. (edited)

I bought Asus A1 usb-c 10gbps and I could kill someone with it, and it should withstand EMP
. It's made of forged steel, and It can dissipate a ton of heat.

Yes, it's 2 times more expensive.

Got one with prime day to go with the Samsung 990 so I could migrate the data across then use the old one in it for storage.
It worked fine for the migration of the old one using the Samsung software and has been fine since swapping the old 970 evo into it. I've not checked the speeds or put it under significant load yet apart from maybe the migration but it's worked as it should with both drives

I've been using one for a few weeks with a 1TB Samsung 980, simply as back-up photo storage when travelling. Seems fine to me temperature wise, so 'heat' added to the deal.

What's the speed that you getting

I would be very keen to know of any alternatives that don’t overheat and transfer at the fastest possible speed. Cost isn’t an issue as work will be paying

There is really only one other design with fins (for want of a better word). You can get these with "fins" all the way around. Maybe they can handle more heat from the SSD

Bought one of these a couple of months ago to back up a steam deck SSD. Got to about 50deg or so in use (measured with an IR temperature gun), which was very hot to the touch. Pretty slow (though that might have been the backup software), but did the job and didn't seem to cause any damage

Any cheap thunderbolt 4 enclosure ?

I got this esata to sata adapter. I reckon IF I can get an adapter plate for one of my pcs, this should give me a faster transfer rate than anything

I'm using one of these with a Western Digital SN550. I had some issues with using the combination with my Mac, where it was unable to format the drive. I had to use diskpart on a Windows machine to resolve the issue but it now seems to be working OK. I can't say what caused the issue but my first guess would be the enclosure.
