................. I would not even put this in my lawnmower, let alone any car.

The reviews seem to disagree with you.

I put together a lot of technically decent 20W50s in my time...but this isn't one of them. Avoid!

so how many people is this product going to be relevant for? Bearing in mind the latest car it supports is from the 80s. If you run a car from those eras you're going to be an enthusiast and would not cheap out on oil. The excellent reviews it has from people I assume are enthusiasts means it's probably very good.

This oil bears very little resemblance to the API SE/CC 20W50s that would be doing the rounds in the '60s & 70s. Back in the day, you'd need a full engine test program to determine how much additive the oil needed to make the SE/CC spec. Today, you'd just pick a number out of thin air. The reality is that this oil probably contains a fraction of the ZDDP & detergent of a 'true' vintage oil. As a bare minimum, look for a 20W50 oil that meets API SL.

Those enthusiasts probably buy this stuff because there's so few 20W50s on the market & the better ones (eg VR1) cost an arm & a leg (which is ironic because 20W50s are dirt cheap to make). I guess if you only drive your beloved Standard Vanguard 200 miles a year, you won't notice you're driving on crap oil but you're not doing your engine any favours. (edited)
