Hp printer

I have purchased a hp laser printer with 6 months toner free, question is should I use the 6 months free then cancel subscription and then go with toner from a cheaper source.I have also been told not to allow updates on the printer,Any advice would be great

"Allowing (firmware) updates" is stated to be mandatory when actively subscribed to HPII.
Not clear if HP enforces this requirement. (edited)

I don't own a HP laser printer but have been using HP inkjet printers for a few years on Instant Ink.
I haven't ever been told to do any mandatory updates. I have checked myself randomly and sometimes there is an update for the printer which I have declined to do.

Oh so you get a prompt,of whether to update or not,I assumed it was done automatically.

I have a laser HP MFC and use third party toners without issue.

Bought the printer just before the pandemic and I'm sure the firmware has been updated a few times and, touchwood, no issues with using non-HP toner.

I'm not part of the HP subscription service so don't know if that makes any difference.
