Stick to the QC35s

How would these compare to my QC35's sound wise? I'm tempted to buy these as a spare.
Did a side by side comparison of these and the QC35 in John Lewis, they sounded iffy in comparison to the 35 (lacking in decent bass) and worse than I expected from a ~£170 set (the 35s sounded very nice imo). You would want to audition them first.
Wonder if Amazon will price match...

Does anyone have opinions on the sound quality..?
For me the sound quality is decent although to be honest, I'm not convinced I'd be able to tell the difference between these and more expensive ones although I'm sure others will have an opinion. I've never had an expensive pair of headphones but these seem as good as any £20-£30 pair (of non Bluetooth) ones I've had before.
Does anyone have opinions on the sound quality..?

Looks like biggest difference is whether you want the controls on the cable or on the buds...
Is it better than this one?: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Bluetooth-Headphones-Anker-Cancellation-Sweatproof/dp/B016KEO7M6/

They have these in most Plymouth stores too. I bought one pair and was so impressed I went out the next day and bought 5 pairs.

If you'd bought these for a tenner you'd be very impressed - at £3.99 it's a bloody bargain. The zip up wire is a brilliant idea and really does reduce tangle.

I think you're underselling the sound quality O.P. Push these right in to your ear canals and you get some good base.

Total bargain!

That's because you can swap left and right using the MySound app. Not sure why anyone would want to do that but you can. Maybe it's something to do with wearing them over or under ear?
That's all well and good, but they don't seem to be marked left and right. I'd be there all day trying to work out which ear to put each bud in :)
Although not cheaper than X3, still good price. Heat added.
Nope, x3s are £109.99 from jaybird. http://www.jaybirdsport.com/shop/x3-product/ . Tried to post it but hukd says it's a non UK deal so was rejected ( shipped from Holland). I got them in 3 days and they are awesome!

Love the way this deal gets voted down. Anyone care to post where it can be found cheaper??? No???
Wont bother posting here again.
**Leafs** (Just for u Danze! :)

Don't worry about the temperature, it is meaningless since people vote based on all sorts of bizarre personal preferences rather than looking at the straight deal. HUKD temp voting used to work really well years ago but people have just ruined it.

So carry on posting deals and don't worry about the temp, you can still be doing people a favour.

Headphones: Over your head.
Earphones: In your ears.
Annoys me more than it should.

This is incorrect, this type of headphone is widely referred to as "in ear headphones".

Good price. I decided to buy the updated QC30 for £200 from Amazon though while it was on sale as it is Bluetooth/wireless. Although the QC20 wins in some respects eg microphone quality.
I paid 200 for these. They are the best headphones I have put on. They are that good there dangerous as soon as you turn the noise cancelling on you can't here anything. I will not turn them on if im outside running or on bike. You don't have to turn them on to work. Amazing headphone for the price.
Quick google shows that you can get these for £174 from PRC direct or Peter Tyson

Not a trolling comment. I bought the 7day shop headphones and then the Plantronics which I currently have. The difference is night and day. These are not worth the money. Have a read on Amazon and check the negative comments, not the sponsored 5 star comments.
It's a trolling comment on the basis that you seem far more interested in posting disagreement with no substance than a constructive comment. Like this morning in a now deleted thread where you criticised headphones with no substance, and you suggested "two tins and a pair of string" when the poster asked about recommending something better.

Also, as far as I know, 7dayshop don't do 'sponsored 5 star reviews', unless you are suggesting otherwise?

My two main concerns with the a3 are: its a sammy (never been a big fan), and its got only 2gb ram.
I have bought the x compact anyway now, so lets see how I get on with it...but yes, the a3 is very tempting.

Why you would want such coloured sound I have no idea. Get something reference or with a little warmth then use an EQ based on whatever you're listening to.
I love my house and dance music, but I also enjoy acoustic, classical and indie stuff. My Audeze Sine are very neutral sounding and I use a parametric Eq and mobile DAC to adjust the sound the sound accordingly. Otherwise you just have muddy sounding mids and highs with lost vocals to the drums.
Just my opinion, but there are better choices. If you like warmth and bass, try some V-moda, punchy but balanced.
Lol the average consumer doesn't know, doesn't want to know and does not care for this. Not only that but the headphones you mentioned are considerably more expensive. Plus, most people are going to be listening on average sounding phones, if they're happy with that then I'm pretty sure they couldn't give a flying **** about reference audio

I wasn't making a direct comparison in terms of the products, I was eluding to the idea of buying a pair of headphones that only suit one genre of music and are tainted too significantly to be enjoyable for other uses. Like I said, fine for bassheads, but not for people that have a wider range of musical taste - the Jabra mentioned would be much better in that sense.

Otherwise the V-Moda I suggested aren't horrendously expensive.

Reference is just a fancy word for neutral and balanced sounds. The rest you can apply with software to highlight the instruments you want to be the focal point. These are limited.
Few years ago I got a pair of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sennheiser-Closed-Dynamic-Stereo-headphones/dp/B0007XJSQC/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1486558945&sr=8-3&keywords=senhizer+headphones

To be honest they are so amazing that I would struggle to justify spending anything more.

Many headphones that have volume + Mic buttons aren't compatible with IOS so people that see these features won't be able to use them. Welcome to Apple!

I never added that, it was added via the website, no idea why it's iOS, assume it works with android and others due to it being a standard jack

although the sony mdr 100's......my fantasy cans...... :)
overpriced.....just got the jabra sport coach special editions brand new from the bay of eBay for 49.99.......really cool earbuds.....no anc but really surprised how good the pnc is. The coaching app is brill.....battery life is just like all the other BT earbuds I have used.....save yourself 150quid.....really no need to spend 229quid on a pair of earbuds.....only my naff opinion...for what it's worth ;) thanks for posting though.....I actually post nothing, so who am I to talk!!!!!! ;)
The usual price is 229.95. So no discount?
Heat from me. Best noise cancelling earphones Bose have produced and arguably the best on the market. Very comfortable as these don't go deep into you ear canal and yet still block out all sound.

Wish these had the on/off button the last gen had for noise cancellation rather than a volume type control.

I wear these everyday all day and would buy them again tomorrow if they were lost or broken.

Personally my ears can't stand the 'earbud' type of headphone, so these are out for me :(
However, I have got such good 'over the ear' noise cancelling headphones for over £200 pounds so I don't think this is an unreasonable price for good noise cancelling headphones. And these are also blutooth. But the revues are generally bad. Also it doesn't seem that they come with a convention blutooth to miniphono adapter, so they can't be used in aircraft, which is one of my main uses

What a bargain! Too bad I've already bought them about a year ago, else will certainly add this to my shopping basket right away! Do note that this is 1st gen, so if you just drive it with mobile phone, it may not sound as impressive, it is always recommend to get dac & amp to drive it to get the perfect sound quality!

I cannot compare to others but they are better than my previous wired hands free headphones, I'm happy :D

Only one negative worth mentioning, the microphone does not work with apps calling, the reference guide states:

On use of calling apps for smartphones and computers
This unit supports normal incoming calls only. Calling apps for smartphones and computers are not supported

I know it does not work on Viber, have not tried anything else.

I got a pair of "Original Xiaomi Hybrid Dual Drivers Earphones Mi IV In-Ear Headphones Pro" during gearbest's Xmas deals ... I have little doubt they are genuine and the quality is excellent (bar the difficult to press switches) .. but the sound quality I thought was not great .. I find them thrashy a bit tinny and lacking mid/bass ... disappointed with the sound quality really compared to all the hype :-(
It's the crappy music app your're using. Install Poweramp/GoneMad/PlayerPro..... then go into your equaliser setting and adjust to your liking. Standard music app makes all music sound bland and flat.
I am using poweramp on my s8 (without adjusting eq/bass) .. but they sound the same through my iPad air2 or hifi .. funnily enough with an over ear beanie on they sound much better with a good bit more mid/bass ... not a patch on a few pairs of soundmagic's E10 I bought some time ago though to be fair for just less than £20 a pair
S8? what brand is that mobile?

I got the Xiaomi hybrids when they came out for £12. Great buds. Look the same as these. There seem to be lots of variations on the same design. What's the difference?
the ones you probably got are the hybrid dual driver MI IV they were launched in november 2015 and have 2 drivers in each earpiece a dynamic and a balanced armature i have these currently and they are superb now the ones in this post are the latest model launched november 2016 these have 3 drivers in each earpiece 2 dynamic and a balanced armature giving them a fuller richer sound according to xiaomi there are reviews backing this up
Dived in and purchased both the pro and the pro HD. I'm exploring the Chinese brands. Also purchased the Redmi 3 pro prime. Hopefully I'm satisfied with the quality, never again will I have to purchase overpriced items.

Style, Variety and Performance

HeasphonesThe advent of digital music spearheaded by Apple led to the need for headphones that were capable of delivering rich bass, clear, thrilling treble and full mid-ranges that modern, discerning music lovers demanded. What's more, they needed a dash of style and portability for the modern active lifestyle.

Industry creatives delivered, thus the chunky headsets of yesteryear were replaced by models that are sleek, stylish and power-packed. From the simple earbuds bundled with your mp3 player all the way up to high end over ear headphones that delight the most discerning audiophile, modern headphones are truly exceptional.

Shop for headphones today and you'll discover a host of quality brands that pack a stunning sonic punch while remaining chic and sleek. Leading manufacturers include the major electronic firms such as Philips and Panasonic, audio specialist outfits such as Shure and Sennheiser, along with firms that focus on headphone aesthetic, such as SkullCandy and Ultimate Ears.

Headphones are output devices that take electrical inputs from computers, sound systems, or music players and convert them into audio output for our listening pleasure. And they do it in a way that allows us to listen alone without disturbing anyone and create an intimate, high-quality listening experience.

Headphones come in a wide variety of forms each with its own special features, pros and cons. These include models with powered noise cancellation, wireless headphones for freedom from chords, and gaming units that deliver the high impact sound and features needed to enjoy today's sophisticated games. Here's your guide to choosing the best type that packs and awesome sound while oozing style and comfort.

The Many Styles of Headphones

Headphones come in a bewildering range of styles and types, but essentially they are either open- or closed-design. This refers to whether they're vented or are sealed. Each type has its pros and cons.

Open headphones are considered to deliver more natural audio quality with certain models known as hi-fi headphones capable of rendering concert hall quality. The drawback is that listeners may be disturbed by ambient sounds. At the same time, sound 'leaks' out from the units and can annoy those nearby.

Closed units block out sound from the environment and create a more intimate experience for the listener. Examples are DJ-style headphones that offer outstanding noise isolation and deep, rich basslines. The downside is that the sound quality can suffer from distortions such as muddiness and echoing. Furthermore, users will be cut off from outside sounds, which could be dangerous in some circumstances, such as crossing roads.

Open or Closed Headphones?

What's the Verdict?

For audiophiles who insist on the highest sound quality and plan to listen in quiet areas, the open design is a clear winner. Most other users would benefit from closed headphones. Exceptions include active users who listen while jogging or walking outdoors and need to be aware of what's happening around them. However, headphones are reasonably priced so buying a dedicated pair for each situation is a smart move.

Types of Headphones

The main way to classify headphones is by their form factors which determine how they're worn.

In-Ear Headphones

In-ear headphones are the most commonly-used variety nowadays and are refreshingly compact and lightweight. They come in two main types:

The first and most basic are earbuds which rest on the outer ear. These are probably the headphones that came with your music player. Some users are happy to stick with them, at least until they stop working. More demanding users upgrade immediately. The fact is that most ear buds tend to be poor performers, owing to the smallness of their drivers. Other than cheapness, they have little to recommend them.

The other, more powerful type are known as in-ear monitors (or IEMs). These fit into the ear canal and are thus also called canalphones. Most feature foam, silicone or rubber tips to enable a secure seal. They generally come with a range of ear tips sizes to choose from. This tight fit offers many benefits. It delivers passive noise isolation for a more intimate experience and the sound doesn't annoy your neighbours. It permits listening at lower volumes. Proximity to the inner ear also results in richer, more powerful sound, especially when compared to buds.

Certain types of in-ear models known as around-ear clip headphones, come with loops that allow them to be wrapped around the back of your ears. Lightweight like in-ear models, they have the added advantage of secure attachment. They won't pop out when skateboarding, jogging or working out at the gym which makes them ideal for the active lifestyle. Some users also find these more comfortable and they don't have to be inserted deeply into the ear canal.

Versatile models come with in-line volume and track controls allowing you to operate your player remotely. This is very handy if you carry your device in a pocket or backpack, or if you listen to music while working out or jogging.

On-Ear Earphones

These come in a range of styles. The most basic are called earcups, which sit on the ear. These are inexpensive, but sound quality tends to be average at best.

Another type known to aficionados as supra-aural headphones come in a variety of types including open-, semi-open, and closed-back models. Their main characteristic is a band to hold it to your head and flat pads that squeeze up against your ears providing sound isolation. Their main drawback is their heaviness and bulk, making them less suitable for mobile users. Moreover, they can get uncomfortably hot over time.

Full-size headphones are the bulkiest and also deliver the most impressively authentic sound. They usually feature large drivers which allow them to deliver higher volumes without distortion. Also known as circumaural headphones, their cups completely cover the ears, cocooning the listener in sonic ambiance. Another bonus is that they don't press against the ears and so are more comfortable. These features make them perfect for audiophiles demanding ultra-high quality extended listening sessions.

Headphones can also be grouped as to special characteristics they offer.

Noise Isolating Earphones

Fitting snugly into your ear canal, these use foam, rubber and a tight fit to create an airtight seal that blocks out ambient noise. Other than delivering clear, accurate sound, another nice touch about noise isolating phones is that you don't annoy people nearby. Plus this sonic soundproofing lets you play your sounds at a lower volume. The downside is that some people find them uncomfortable.

Noise-Cancelling Headphones

While noise-isolating units simply use a seal to block external sounds, noise cancelling headphones feature sophisticated electronics to render active noise control. They work by capturing exterior noise via a microphone, phase-reverse the noise, and introduce it into the sound output. In a sense, they create anti-noise that cancels out the original.

The benefits are manifold. Using noise-cancelling headphones permits you to listen at lower volumes which is better for your ears. The quiet sound levels also result in a richer and more authentic listening experience. They're a particularly good choice for travellers on planes or commuters on buses or trains.

While the noise reduction can be dramatic, these items do have some drawbacks. For one thing, they're more expensive. They tend to be heavier owing to the circuitry and required power source, plus, the battery has to be charged regularly. Finally, audio quality can suffer with hissing and humming interference and a tinny quality to the sound. However, technology is always advancing, with models offering an increasingly enhanced listening experience appearing all the time.

Wireless Headphones

If you're fed up of constantly getting your headphone cord tangled up or snagged on protruding items, you'll welcome these cordless units. Styles range from full-size models complete with charging stands, to portable wireless headphones that hold the power and control pack in a loop around your neck. Most are rechargeable via a USB lead that connects to an adapter or a computer.

One thing to bear in mind, though, is that you do have to sacrifice audio quality. This is because the system needs to compress the music file while sending it to the phones. However, new audio technologies such as the aptX Bluetooth sound codec minimise any sound degradation. Another factor to bear in mind is that the phones require their own power supply. This adds to the bulk and means you have one more device for which you need to keep an eye on battery levels.

Headphones for Special Uses

Most people use their headphones for listening to music on devices such as mobile phones, mp3 players, and iPods. Also available are headphones with features making them useful for special purposes.

Headsets

With built-in microphones and high quality performance, headsets are a must in this connected age, especially for users of Skype and Hangouts who appreciate hands-free communication. They're also vital for users of voice-to-text dictation systems. Online gamers are another group who benefit from headsets.

Sports Earphones

If you play sports, work out at a gym, or lead a generally active lifestyle, music is a great motivator. Listening to podcasts and other programming also makes a fine accompaniment to physical activity. The good news is that you can find perfect headphones to complete your experience in the form of headphones that deliver great sounds while staying firmly in place during the most rigorous exercise routines. These include the clip earphones mentioned above and on-ear headphones that feature the band on the back (neck sitting). Wireless headphones are also great for sporty types, as there are no lines to snag on.

Models featuring on-cord controls and built-in microphones are especially convenient for active users. They allow you to switch playlists, take phone calls and adjust volume without having to stop your activity to access the player itself.

If you're a committed athlete, you can find special headphones that work to monitor your heart rate and deliver audio cues to help with your workout routine.

Water-resistant headphones are also suitable for active users. As well as withstanding perspiration, they're also great for boaters, fishermen, or just for anyone who might get caught out in the rain. Other features of certain sports headphones are reflective cords to help visibility. These offer enhanced safety to those jogging in low light, for example.

Headphones for Gaming

Gaming headphones require some special qualities. They need to deliver stunning sound, of course, so that you can completely immerse yourself in the plot and keep on top of the action. Quality-wise, they need to render a fine balance between high and low frequencies, and create an atmospheric sense of space that's essential for an authentic gaming environment. They also need a quality microphone so you can chat with your buddies in the online arena. Lastly, most gamers are in it for the long haul, so you need headphones that will stay comfortable for hours on end. Lightweight and soft foam earcups are ideal for this.

Headphone Cables and Plugs

One factor to consider is the type of cable you want in your headphones. They come in several types. Most earbuds feature the double sided Y-cable that connects to both earpieces. Another option is the J-cable in which one side is longer than the other. This allows it to be strung round the back of the neck. The other main type, mostly found in on ear models is single cabling which features just one cord attached to the left ear-piece. The sound is then fed internally to the right ear via the headband. Single cord styles are less likely to get tangled up.

As for materials, most audiophiles agree that oxygen-free copper (OFC) is the way to go. Real audio buffs insist on (7N) seven 9's cables, so called because they're rated oxygen-free to 7 decimal places.

Plugs come in two main types: straight and angled. Angled models, also known as L plugs are useful with devices that feature earphone outlets situated on the bottom or side. Gold-tipped plugs are desirable, as they don't corrode or tarnish as copper does over time.

Are Headphones Unhealthy?

Headphones for children

Though many have proclaimed that listening to music through headphones is a recipe for deafness, the jury's still out in that regard. Headphones deliver a few milliwatts of output power, which is quite safe, provided that care is taken not to play at too high a volume.

One way to stay safe is to only choose quality products. Research has shown that higher frequencies cause the most damage so using high quality units that deliver rich bass should be healthier.

Like anything done to excess, listening to loud music can cause problems. The wise solution is to limit volume and time spent listening. 80% volume for up to 90 minutes at a time has been cited as a safe program and should be enough for even the most die-hard music buffs.

Another option for users worried about their hearing, or that of their children, is to choose volume-limiting headphones. These offer a built in feature that limits your volume to a safe level of 85 dB or less.

Users also need to consider their safety, especially those using their headphones out of doors. Sometimes, as when exercising outside, users really need to remain aware of the environment so as to avoid any danger. For this reason, open style phones are recommended as they allow ambient sound in. Luckily, headphones are so economical tat it makes sense to buy several pairs for the varied circumstances of a modern lifestyle.

Headphones and Battery Life

One factor users are concerned about is battery life. The fact is that headphones consume low levels of power and this tends to be fairly constant across headphone types. While the bigger speakers of full-size phones require more energy to move than tiny ear buds, the difference in battery life tends not to be dramatic owing to the high efficiency of the units.

Battery life becomes more of an issue with noise-cancelling and wireless units, as these require their own power sources. One big power-guzzler is the Bluetooth radio for wireless headphones. You may find the desirable portability of such units marred by diminished battery life. However, most Bluetooth phones are rechargeable and a daily charge is quite convenient for most users.
