Anything is better than the mess Viewranger has become

It's taken me a year but I've managed to get Outdoor Active to work. I can get it to do the same (pretty much) as Viewranger used to but I've only persevered because 12 years of trails would've been lost otherwise.

My top tip would be, only have one offline map on your phone at any time. This is slightly over simplifying things but if you have two maps and one overlaps the other, the app can't deal with such madness and becomes unuseable.

Also, go into your settings and make sure autostart is enabled .

There's about another 20 tips i could add but the navigation side of the app is shockingly bad unless you can grasp the enormity of the Nine Circles of Hell.
It actually does work though... really... you just need to print a map every time until you iron out the huge creases.

    Good luck. (edited)

Thanks, I've ended up getting this for £12.31

How did you manage to get it cheaper? Have I missed something? It’s coming up as £14.99 for me.

Great deal. How do you add the code to Google play?

Just buy it via web browser and then login to the App itself and pro will show up on your account.

How? The only option for PRO I can find is the free trial

I went to the free trial signed up and then it gave me the option to subscribe, I used a VPN to get it for about £12.50 (thanks cloudrush) Once completed on the PC I downloaded the app, signed in with the account details setup on the subscription and job done. I immediately went into the settings and turned off the auto renewal as I will decide throughout the year if I want to renew or not, very easy to change back just one click! (edited)

Any Os maps on the pro?

    Replying to

OSM is Open Street Map, rather than Ordinance Survey. tbh OSM maps are probably as good, if not better in some places, than OS maps.
I don't really see the advantages of the pro version. You can get offline OSM maps with OSMand, and import downloaded ,gpx files from All Trails for offline navigation.

I'm using Topo GPS which takes a bit of getting use to but not bad. Has a useful feature which will generate a walk for you at any point on the map. Used a few times in the peaks and really good walks. You do have to pay for os maps by the square you download which usually cost 79p but it gives you a large area of map. I've used my Google rewards money to pay for them

You can now get a yearly sub for all the maps if you wish.

Why would anyone want this when you can get backcountry navigator pro for the same price for life and be able to download all OS mapping for the UK to use for life?

I think that app sucks in recent updates

IS this better or Komoot for cycling? (edited)
    hwangeruk's avatar
    I love komoot!
  9. ns100uk's avatar
Thanks OP - wouldn't subscribe at full price so wait for the deals like this. Worked for me using through the browser rather than the app as you suggested above.

I’ve not used this. Any good for walking & cycling. Looking for something after Viewranger got switched off
    Libre11's avatar
Not used for cycling but walking/hiking most definitely. I’ve used this for over 60+ hikes and it’s been great 99% of the time. Well worth it for offline maps especially if you have a Garmin/Watch that can import maps

My Outdooractive subscription runs out in 2 weeks.. looks like good opportunity to try this one😁 anyone has expirience with both?

(No OS Maps.. damn.. I think £10/year more for outdooractive then ) (edited)

I have Komoot premium which I use mainly for hikes. Does anyone know if this is a lot better?

Brilliant for hiking used it loads in the Lake District

Tbh the free version does plenty enough for me. The one time I did a free trial to enable the watch app so I wouldn’t have to walk around with my phone in my hand as much, the watch app didn’t work and just showed a blank screen. Not worth it imo.
    bildo's avatar
On the flip side, if you have a watch that allows GPX files, it's a godsend.

Thanks, mine automatically renewed a couple of weeks ago, and thankfully they allowed me to cancel within the 30 day cool off, and I was able to use this.
  16. p5en8yh3ke's avatar
Quite like being able to plan routes on outdoor active and it ‘snapping” to existing paths

I prefer Strava but it's a good deal!

Agreed! Viewranger, we MISS you! OutdoorActive is a pile of pants and I cannot stand it. Viewranger was perfect - straightforward and easy to use.

However, I can't seem to get this code to work....

    It's September - somehow it doesn't surprise me that AUGUST22 doesn't work. 😋
