Just spoken to O2 on their live chat about the RPI increase. They've advised that because this is a set amount contract there is no split between the phone and airtime so the RPI+3.9% increase in April 2023 (and then again April 2024) would be on the whole contract amount and not just the airtime. However, they've advised that it would be applied to the £32 amount not £48 which contradicts what someone else has said here.
That said, even applied at the £32 level it would still increase to £37 in just a few months time and then be over £40 for the last 7 ish months of the 24.
Very tempting offer at £32 a month but the known increases have put me off and I'll hold out to see if I can get something similar elsewhere without the steep increases.

(this logic would also apply if you were to cancel and would need to pay off the entire contract at £32 per month if you wanted to do it)

Ah this is interesting and is now tempting me to go with it. The thing is that the other major networks all add inflation plus 3.9% so if you want a new phone you’ll get the sharp increases next yr and yr after regardless of who you go with. And unless you’re willing to stump up a large upfront fee the line rental will always be over £30 for a relatively new iPhone.

Now you’ve thrown a spanner in the works as this is great and I’d get Volt benefits with Virgin Media.

Now we just need the Pro to discount.
    standforit_'s avatar
I have brought this contract a few weeks back £27 a month and £100 up front cost. Just a heads up you will only get a 50gb extra on volt because it’s a 50gb contract from o2 not a 100gb the extra 50 is some sort of addon that the company who provides the contract gets as a bonus. So you will have 150gb.
Pics below are after bolt has been added. How this helps

so, have i got this right?

The price will go up circa 15% on the non discounted £48 rate in April 2023 and then id GUESS a further 10% on that price in April '24?
    48720712-x3zIc.jpg
so actually it will be more like the above?

So if you can buy new from ebay for £650 (says Sealed - so these are legit?) and then you get a sim only for £5 per month, then 650 + (24 x 5) = £770....£173 cheaper than the O2 deal

    Am i right??
    thebiggishman's avatar
I don't think the increase is in the full £48 / only the portion ( airtime) that is for data etc

No one so far has been able to show how much of the £48 ( pre discount price ) Is made up of the airtime and how much is for the physical phone

Tried my luck again on the live chat this morning. In a nutshell, O2 are making it up as they go along.
I gave them the link to the deal and asked them to check the deal and the small print about the RPI, pointed out that the increase applies only to the airtime and not the phone element which they confirmed and then asked the question “what is the split between airtime and phone to know how much the RPI increase will apply to?”
They didn’t know and told me to speak with Money Saving Expert site as it’s their agreed deal not O2’s. I challenged this and said that O2 will be taking the money and the contract with them so they will need to know how much is airtime to apply the increase and they then defaulted to saying that in the absence of an airtime element the increase will apply to the standard contract amount of £32 which would mean an increase to £37 in April.
They don’t have a clue and there is no definite answer. All I’d say is that if you take this deal be prepared for the steep increase in April and again the following year. For those who have managed to get the live chat to offer some reassurance of lower increases I’d keep evidence of that and be prepared for a fight in a few months.

Would the annual CPI increase apply to the £48 which is then discounted by the £16? Or would the increase apply to the net £32? Assuming a 14% increase, that would be £2.24/month difference (if my maths is right!).
    thebiggishman's avatar
It says in the small print that it's the airtime (

I’ve just spoke to them the 18 percent increase will apply to the 48 pound original price not the discount price so it will go up 8 pound ish in April. I will be returning because that is a very sneaky way to scam people.

I have been into the shop yesterday about this, and after 5 minutes of explaining to the guy that this is an o2 backed deal, he admitted he didn't know, and would take a punt on the rpi increase being against the £32, but he wouldn't confirm that in writing. So this morning I used o2 chat and asked them. They have told me that as this isn't an o2 refresh deal, there is no breakdown between airtime and device in the plan, as its a standard tariff (as per their tsandcs) o2.co.uk/prices

They then said "as being an online sales advisor of O2 they can only comment on the O2 deals and offers directly from the website and are unable to comment on the third party deals". They also said that the RPI is regulated only on the airtime cost and airtime cost is mentioned only on the Refresh contract not on the standard ones, and then asked me to call o2, as his team couldn't help....
    hard work this...

It literally says on my copy of the contract I got emailed price increases will be on the 48 pound

So if people are taking this contract they need to base increases on 48 pound if it’s any lower it’s a bonus (edited)

This would be unlocked right ?
So for example I could use the SIM and give someone else the phone ??

Considering that direct from Apple, the iPhone 13 costs £749, this is a pretty great price! Spreading the cost over 24 months and the all the data you'd need for about an extra £20 (+ extra inflation costs).
  11. RyanWilliams's avatar
I just noticed it’s a 14 percent increase on 48 pound not the 32 pound in April think I’ll leave it.
    thebiggishman's avatar
    ?? Can you explain please?
  12. RyanWilliams's avatar
Beware this contract will go up 8 pound in 5 months.
    DaveyboyPNE's avatar
Where have you got £8 from. The RPI increase plus 3.9% is on the £32. This has been confirm further up and I also had it confirmed to me on a chat this morning with O2. So more like £5 increase. But then all the other networks will be increasing by a similar amount too.
  13. ck3245's avatar
Debating whether to go for 12 pro over the 13. Pick up a decent second hand one for around £450 and get a cheap monthly sim with it.

It’s the annual price increases on the line rental that put me off these kind of deals, especially with current inflation.
    WhaleTrain's avatar
Personally, the 12 Pro will be the better option here - the base 13 would offer you less.
  14. Dexwolf's avatar
Great deal to replace my XS and to give me 5G, thanks OP
  15. jeves's avatar
On MSE. Surely the £49 up front and £29 month is better over 24 months. Same phone, same sim deal. Total cost £745
    northy_'s avatar
yup, but where i live there is no 3 coverage :-(

o2 is way better than 3 so great deal thank you

Just got of live chat and they're telling me that the increase will be on the £16 airtime only. I have saved the transcript it anyone want to see it
    Suede's avatar
But there isn’t any airtime cost in the airtime section, it’s only a discount.

There is an original cost for the phone, £48, you’d also think if there was an original airtime cost then that too would be shown.

I’ve posted my transcript which they say no RPI will be added to this deal, and that’s confirmed at the bottom of the page, saying you’ll only ever pay £32 for 24 months.

    I’m keeping my transcript!

I’ve been speaking with them on and off all day today and have two more different answers.

I am now speaking to a floor manager who quite clearly doesn’t know either. He’s told me to wait until April to see how much it goes up by!

    you couldn’t make this up!
    ck3245's avatar
Haha, wait until April and see what happens. Brilliant.
I'm glad we’ve finally got some clarity on this deal

Did he at least say whether you could challenge a price rise if it’s on the £48 rather than £16?

Has anyone got this yet? I'm on the payment page and it says on the right hand side £32 pm but when creating the direct debit its for £48.00 and the contract also says £48.00. Great deal for £32!

It looks from the small print that the inflation increase is on the airtime part of the contact

    Also
    noticed
If inflation goes up they add another 3.9p cent on top of inflation

BUT if inflation is negative they ONLY ( lol) add the 3.9 % ie they DON'T t reduce it in line with inflation aka it's a win win for them lol (edited)

What is O2 signal generally like?
  32. Amir_Din's avatar
I got this and on the pre contract it says £48 per month, however online it says £32.

Is this normal as the contract won't state the discounted price and just show the standard price?

Also I rang o2 and you can pay more if you want to beat the price hike in Feb 2023.
    NolanJP's avatar
What do you mean by pay more?
  33. Mattyb89's avatar
I got this too and on my o2 app it says the next bill is £48? Bit confused here, I might speak to them on live chat to make sure it will be the £32!

I can see it's a bolt on in my account which states: £16 Airtime Discount 24 Months, so it should be fine (edited)
    Amir_Din's avatar
I'm on the phone to them. They said it'll appear on your first bill as the deal wasn't listed on their website but through a third party website.

Let me know what they say to you.

Just seeking some clarification - I’ve read the whole thread and there are differing answers from o2 as to whether the price increase applies to £32 or £48.

my phone arrived today, I haven’t opened it as it may well go back. Surely Martin Lewis wouldn’t endorse something that might well screw people over in April, would he?!

Is there anyone who works for o2 here who can post a definitive answer?
    ck3245's avatar
Best bet is to contact them yourself. If you’re hoping it’s based on the £32 and it turns out next April it’s on the £48 you’re not going to get very far if you complain to them quoting something you’ve read on here are you?
