Similar to a recent post for the smaller 128gb, but this one with 256gb.

Did a lot of research as to the benefits of Gen 5 or
6, but at £649 it is half the price of a Gen 6. Reality is that I am not going to challenge the processor speed and will be ready for a new one by the time it goes out of support (4th Gen is a 2020 model).

Liquid Retina Display.
Try to find a more advanced mobile display. We’ll wait. The edge-to-edge Liquid Retina display is not only gorgeous and immersive, but also features incredibly advanced technologies. Like ProMotion, True Tone and industry‑leading color accuracy, which make everything feel responsive and look stunning. Quite simply, this combination of features make it the world’s most advanced mobile display.

Cameras.
Think you know iPad cameras? Think deeper.Advanced cameras combined with a large display, fast performance and highly calibrated sensors have always made iPad uniquely capable. The Wide and new Ultra Wide cameras help you frame the perfect photo or video. And together with studio‑quality mics and four speaker audio, you can even set up a multicamera filmmaking rig.

LiDAR scanner.
LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is used to determine distance by measuring how long it takes light to reach an object and reflect back. It is so advanced, it’s being used by NASA for the next Mars landing mission. And it’s now been engineered to fit in the thin and light iPad Pro. The custom-designed LiDAR Scanner uses direct time of flight to measure reflected light from up to five meters away, both indoors and out. It works at the photon level, operates at nanosecond speeds and opens up tremendous possibilities for augmented reality and beyond.

Augmented Reality.
On the new iPad Pro, AR apps become even more realistic. Placing an AR object now happens instantly. Realistic object occlusion allows AR objects to pass in front of and behind real-world structures. Improved motion capture and people occlusion are more accurate than ever. And developers will be able to create even more immersive experiences.

Shoot and edit.
The pro camera system makes iPad Pro incredibly versatile. Shoot, edit and share a 4K video, all on the same device. Capture an entire room in one shot with the Ultra Wide camera and use Markup to redesign it on the spot. Or scan a document, sign or mark it up with Apple Pencil, then send back your notes with a tap.

TrueDepth camera.
The front-facing TrueDepth camera enables Face ID, the world’s most secure facial authentication in a tablet — and in a computer. It also means you can chat with friends using FaceTime, take Portrait selfies or liven up your Messages conversations by turning yourself into an Animoji.

Performance.
Faster than you can say PC.A12Z Bionic chip. With the A12Z Bionic chip, iPad Pro is so fast it outpaces most PC laptops available today. It makes everything you do fast and fluid, from your everyday tasks to graphics-intensive workflows. And the 8-core graphics processor means even more performance and realism for the apps and games where it matters most.

Pro workflow.
A12Z Bionic is designed to be put to work, especially with pro apps. The 8‑core graphics processor delivers fluid performance for things like 4K video editing, 3D design and augmented reality. Enhanced thermal design means higher peak and longer sustained performance — critical for pro workflows. And the Apple‑designed Neural Engine enables on‑device machine learning ready for the next generation of pro apps.

Multitasking.
iPadOS is designed to harness the power and performance of iPad Pro. Lightning‑fast hardware and powerful software were designed in concert to make every interaction snappy and smooth. Which makes working with multiple apps at once and moving between spaces quick and effortless.

I wouldn't expect performance to be much different on this to the later models, but the XDR display on the later M1 and M2 might be a big deal to some.
    zeb.mattey's avatar
We had this alongside the m1 12.9 for a while. I am always interested in display tech so compared them arduously.
The difference is shockingly, very small for almost everything. Colours and normal images, normal videos, look nigh identical - very suprising to me given our OLED TV looks so good. Blacks are obviously darker, but for all intensive purposes its such a marginal change as to be a non issue.

HDR content has advantages of course on the LED, but i rarely consume HDR content on an iPad.

Guys not knocking the deal at all
Just a friendly suggestion that at this price look around ebay etc
Might get lucky and get a new one newer generation for not much more
Heat for official apple price though
    skinrush's avatar
You won't get a 12.9" of equivalent condition (eg new shell, battery and a 12 month warranty) for anything close to this price on eBay.
You'll currently pay at least £100 more for less storage, from sellers with questionable feedback, and with descriptions such as 'open, never used (which means 'used')' or 'ex display' (which means 'used a lot')...

I have an iPad Air 9th Gen (2021 I think) and I’m using it for emails/browsing and the odd bit of Sky Go and Xbox Cloud Gaming. Am I likely to see any noticeable differences if I upgrade or as the name suggests, is this more aimed at ‘pro’ users? Thanks.
    IamChris's avatar
from a performance perspective the lowest spec ipad from a few years ago vs the most recent super pro hardly perform any different to a standard user, the benefits most will notice are better quality screen (smoother and better colours/brightness) and the physical dimensions.
  4. skipperjonce's avatar
Does anyone still buy this overpriced tat?
    JasSingh93's avatar
Wouldn’t say it’s overpriced. Still powerful and holds up very well despite being a 2020 model.

The only problem is when Apple decide to cut support, it'll be a lot sooner than the M1 models. I'm also hoping at some point they'll let you install Mac OS on it as there are rumours of them introducing a touch screen version... Which they could support the M1, but they wont this. However that will probably never happen.
    GrahamStoneman's avatar
Installing macOS will be a feature they reserve for the new models, even if older hardware could support it. They did the same with the screen sharing stuff a few years ago. They need people to upgrade to new shiny stuff and can't rely on hardware improvements alone to do that now.

Just spotted the thread was live again.  Mine came yesterday and love it - Just changed jobs and the new company uses Google Workspace - Using it on a laptop was driving me to distraction - the IPad Pro is perfect for the job!  My daughter now wants one but trying to talk her out of it!
  7. plewis00's avatar
These held their value well but the 4th gen 12.9" seems to be a good choice of device, they share the same design as the 5th and 6th gens so can't really tell it's older and the SoC was always fast enough. Not a lot this can't do that the later ones can though it is nearly 3 years old by now and the SoC is more like 5 years old. My friend asked for one for drawing, so I will send this to her - it's barely more than a used one these days if you can even find them (very few for sale).
  8. Mrepg's avatar
I have the newest top spec one and I got to be honest they are amazing, drawing, music production, newspapers, magazines, gaming be it apps or from pc and everything instant. The older model will do everything the same so cracking purchase. The only downside is they do weigh a bit
  9. Smeaton1724's avatar
Equivalent latest model is £1249, so for £600 more you get -
    M2 Processor
    8GB RAM
    Better Screen
USB-C Port with faster transfer rates
    External Monitor support is better

Both devices have lidar and the same form factor. The refurbished device has the same screen as what is in the current 11'' iPad Pro that Apple sells, so it's not like the screen is terrible. The refurbished device has 6GB RAM.

Computing terms the latest model is x3 better in metal graphics performance and 40% better in computing performance. Real world, very little (if anything other than video transcoding) pushes either device due to software limitations. (edited)
    plewis00's avatar
You can probably find a used M1 2021 5th gen for this kind of money - that’s what I’d do. Even the M1 doesn’t need all that performance really.
  10. JamesClark1991's avatar
Is it USB C or Lightning connector?
    EliotBanks's avatar
Usb C. Can connect a monitor and external hard drives (edited)

Good find. I have the first gen which is looking outdated with a measly 64GB from Apple refurbished. Now need to order a case with this one.
    robdougall's avatar
I bought this STM Rugged Case for £29.95 reduced from £69 at Amazon.
  12. Calum_Coyle's avatar
Great price. I still have the 1st gen iPad pro and for general use it’s still a beast so I’m confident this will be an amazing buy for most people
    greenant's avatar
I'd say the first gen iPad Pro is past its prime. It was the last one to include only 2gb ram and it's really felt. Multitasking is slow as molasses. Still seems ok for single tasking at the moment. (This applies to the 9.7 inch version). (edited)
  13. tmj2007's avatar
This is a cracking deal. I use one of these professionally, for photo editing on location, and it’s still blazing fast.
  14. ashmac's avatar
I still have the first gen I paid £200 for it off shpok about 2 years ago , still super quick and battery last ages , I’ve seen the new ones and can’t really see any real world upgrade
    greenant's avatar
The amount of RAM would be the most noticeable improvement. First gen iPad Pro was really lacking here.
  15. hedgemonkey9874's avatar
Great price but I still have my immaculate 2019 12.9” pro with 512gb. I’ve noticed no slow down in performance and the battery still lasts well. Can’t justify this I don’t think
    Jibz685's avatar
Yes no need to upgrade unless it was the M1 model
  16. northerngeek's avatar
can you put a sim card in these and get an internet connection? Also receive calls too if the sim has call usage not just data.
If not maybe i could get a mini wifi router with sim data card.

what does the pro edition have that the others don't? (edited)
    Optom's avatar
    This is WiFi model only.
  17. Raja007's avatar
Apple must be very happy selling their refurbished almost 3 year old tablet for £649 because we have people who are willing to buy it and consider it good deal
    Ashe's avatar
They're even happier selling newer ones for twice the price to people who would be absolutely fine with the 3 year old tablet.
  18. PurpleRain21's avatar
It’s tempting but I will wait for iPad with MiniLED display versions to come in refurbished.. (edited)
  19. Dean_Martin's avatar
I wanted to get one of these in December 2022 but they kept going out of stock. Ended up buying an M1 iPad Pro 12.9 for the same price from cash converters albeit only the 128GB version. It did come with the Gen2 Apple pencil and paper like screen protector though.
  20. Gspaddock's avatar
That’s a great price. I got one before Xmas off eBay refurb 128 4th gen for £480 after discount but obv no box or apple warranty.
    greenant's avatar
But was it “manufacturer refurbished”? Big difference. When i bought an iPhone off ebay i checked for that and received one with a brand new battery.
  21. andmiranda's avatar
Heat - I have the gen 1 version of this (32 gig) which I got on release and still going strong so value for money - when it eventually packs in will get another 12.9 pro

Does this support a Magic Keyboard?

    I can’t seem to find a compatible.

    Cheers in advance
    A57ton's avatar
    Yes it does
  24. dgh89's avatar
Isn’t this the foldable version as in Jerryrigeverything?
    plewis00's avatar
If you sit on it, it’ll bend - like most thin but large devices. It’s weak in the middle but not a worry if you look after your stuff.
  25. adam_hutchinson's avatar

I bought it in 2021 June, 128gb for 679. and sold it for 450 in ebay in 2022 May.
    Now attempted again!
    northerngeek's avatar
why you sell it? this is cert by apple so makes this a good deal?
  28. tablespoon's avatar
Thanks for posting. I'm in Ireland at the moment and ordered one through the .ie site €779 In my opinion it's a bargain.
  29. Incognitoso's avatar
You not buy product because it was reduced in price .. This logic I was using in the past and have so many PC / IT stuff that when i count how much money gone OMG buy because it is good price .

The first thing for buyer need to think -- I need this iPad or this PC because i need to do work and I need tools to do this job and you buy tools to your works need not more not less

You not buying product and thinking it is cheap price now i need to buy and later i will think what to do or try to adapt to big iPad

iPad 12.9 is more for creative people where they need big surface to work with pen etc
As Tablet it is to big not comfortable on sofa etc I have my self 12 inch tablet not apple and I know what Im saying try to keep with one hand for long Then why use tablet 12.9 then simple have MacBook air and can do same things Plus you will have stand keyboard and mouse etc Where Ipad 12.9 Need cover , keyboard etc
  30. A57ton's avatar
I have this and I’ve had it for a few years. Although it’s an absolute beast and unbeatable for consuming media on the go, if I was to buy again I would get an 11 inch.
    zeb.mattey's avatar
No way man. Ive had both at once, the 12.9 is just so much better. The 2" makes no difference in portability but all the difference in media consumption/productivity
  31. Andy_Cowl's avatar
Back in stock, just bought one.
  32. PurpleRain21's avatar
That’s lot of money for the iPad which is 3 years old meaning only 2 more years of software upgrade support from Apple..
    Hoskas's avatar
my gen 1 ipad pro 12.9 still gets all the software updates on IOS. bought at launch in 2015
  33. Hoskas's avatar
just bought one of the restock too
  34. Argeilas's avatar
    Pros:
    Software support for another 3-5years
Absolute steal at this price point
256gb is the sweet spot for most users

    Cons:
    Lacking monitor support
    No MiniLED
M1 cpu is a big step up on the Gen5 iPad

    Either way great deal
  35. scoundr3l's avatar
Shame there isn’t any Wi-Fi+Cellular, I’d have been all over this.

Also, what is the 2022/2023 11” iPad Pro? M2 or previous Apple cpu? (edited)
